Another Trailer for Documentary on 'Grace Jones: Bloodlight & Bami'

Grace Jones: Bloodlight & Bami Trailer

“Been around the block too many times…” A brand new, full-length trailer has debuted for Sophie Fiennes’ documentary Grace Jones: Bloodlight & Bami, which is premiering at the Toronto Film Festival this weekend. Originally titled Grace Jones – The Musical of My Life, the film tells the life story of artist/dancer/actor Grace Jones, who some may recognize as May Day from A View to a Kill, though her career is much more diverse ranging from dance to art to music and much more. Described as an “observational portrait” and “cinema verité-style film”, the doc film combines intimate personal footage with unique staged musical sequences to give us a look at both her public and private life. This trailer shows more than the first teaser trailer, but it’s still very short and ends rather abruptly. I’m still curious to see this film! Take a look below. ›››

  • Official Trailer for 'Brimstone & Glory' Doc About a Fireworks Festival

Official Trailer for 'Brimstone & Glory' Doc About a Fireworks Festival

    Brimstone & Glory Trailer

“Ecstatic ritual, danger and the absolute beauty of fireworks.” Oscilloscope Labs has debuted an official trailer for a documentary titled Brimstone & Glory, profiling the glorious National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec, Mexico. This 10-day festival of fireworks and pyrotechnics is unlike anything else, considering more than three quarters of Tultepec’s residents work in pyrotechnics. The doc features a score by Beasts of the Southern Wild’s Dan Romer & Benh Zeitlin, which actually makes me even more excited to see this (I love the unique sound of their music it always makes my heart race). This seems like one of the most spectacular, stunning docs about fireworks ever made. “For the people of Tultepec, the National Pyrotechnic Festival is explosive celebration, unrestrained delight and real peril.” This looks totally amazing. Fire it up. ›››

  • First International Trailer for Australian Racism Drama 'Sweet Country'

First International Trailer for Australian Racism Drama 'Sweet Country'

    Sweet Country Trailer

“You run away, I’ll shoot you for desertion!” Memento Films has debuted an official international trailer for the Australian racism drama Sweet Country, from acclaimed director Warwick Thornton (of Samson & Delilah). This just premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and will also play at the Toronto and London Film Festivals next. Sweet Country takes place in the dusty Northern Territory of Australia nearly 100 years ago, telling the story of an Aboriginal stockman who shoots a white man and is taken to trial. Hamilton Morris stars, with Sam Neill, Ewen Leslie, Bryan Brown, Thomas M. Wright, and Matt Day. I saw this in Venice and it’s good, but a bit dry. There’s more intensity in this trailer than the film, it’s a very slow drama. ›››

  • The Venice Film Festival is a Wonderful Film Fest That Stole My Heart

The Venice Film Festival is a Wonderful Film Fest That Stole My Heart

    Venice Film Festival

“Venice was and is full of lost places where people put up for sale the last worn bits of their souls, hoping no one will buy.” (-Ray Bradbury) The canals, the tiny streets, the little bridges, the amazing food. There’s so much to love about Venice, the beautiful Italian city on the water. I wasn’t sure what to expect attending the Venice Film Festival for my first time, but at the end of it all, I have to admit it is a wonderful festival in an extremely lovely city. At the beginning of the fest, I wrote about how much I love the Telluride Film Festival and how sad I was to skip that fest and attend this one instead. But, Venice stole my heart, and has shown me there’s just as much to love about this festival as there is about Telluride. Not only do they show some of the best films every year, but there is a charm to the city that can’t be found nearly anywhere else. ›››

Venice 2017: Samuel Maoz's 'Foxtrot' is a Brilliant Tale of Life in Israel

    Foxtrot

Oh my goodness, this film is brilliant. You won’t be ready for this when it hits you, no matter how prepared you think you may be. Foxtrot is the new film from Israeli director Samuel Maoz (of Lebanon previously) and clearly confirms that he’s a master filmmaker who has so much to show us. Foxtrot is both the story of a family, and the story of a soldier. It’s distinctly an Israeli film, criticizing not only the society and culture of the country, but especially their military and the idea that they’re supposedly doing good. I had heard great things before, but I was still completely floored by this film when I saw at the Venice Film Festival. It’s the kind of perfect film that leaves you speechless at the end, you don’t even know what to say other than “wow.” ›››

  • Venice 2017: 'Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond' Explores Truth & Comedy

Venice 2017: 'Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond' Explores Truth & Comedy

Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond

After breaking out big in the early 1990s, actor Jim Carrey took on his most challenging role yet – playing Andy Kaufman in the film Man on the Moon. He ended up winning a Golden Globe for his performance and the film remains the most seminal feature made about Kaufman and his comedy. Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond is a documentary created nearly 20 years later after behind-the-scenes footage was discovered in Carrey’s offices. The film starts out by examining the task of playing Kaufman, and how Jim Carrey got so immersed in the role he “disappeared from Earth” for two years and became Andy, allowing himself to only be referred to as Andy (or Tony Clifton) on set and nothing else. But there’s more to this film when it gets into analyzing the idea of comedy, and honesty, and it becomes a remarkably philosophical film by the end. ›››

  • Dan Stevens is Dickens in 'The Man Who Invented Christmas' Trailer

Dan Stevens is Dickens in 'The Man Who Invented Christmas' Trailer

The Man Who Invented Christmas Trailer

“I’m the author here!” Bleecker Street Media recently released the first official trailer for a holiday drama titled The Man Who Invented Christmas, about the story of Charles Dickens and the creation of the character Ebenezer Scrooge from A Christmas Carol. Dan Stevens stars as Dickens, and Christopher Plummer plays Scrooge, in this tale that mixes reality and imagination to tell us the story of how Dickens created this characters that would “forever change the holiday season into the celebration we know today.” The full cast includes Jonathan Pryce, Simon Callow, Donald Sumpter, Miriam Margolyes, Ian McNeice, Bill Paterson, and Justin Edwards. This reminds me of the other film Goodbye Christopher Robin, about an author and his creation, but this one seems much more dark and fantastical. Have a look. ›››

First Trailer for Showtime's 'Eric Clapton: A Life in 12 Bars' Music Doc

Eric Clapton: A Life in 12 Bars Trailer

“When it came to blues, there was nobody like him.” Ready for another rock doc? Showtime has unveiled a trailer for Eric Clapton: A Life in 12 Bars, a documentary about the life and music of Eric Clapton. This film is premiering at the Toronto Film Festival now, which is why the trailer is out, and then will air on Showtime in February early next year. Told through his own words and songs, Eric Clapton: A Life in 12 Bars is about one of the “great artists of the modern era — a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner, and the only artist ever inducted three times into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” There’s tons of fantastic footage in this trailer, and the film features extensive interviews with Clapton himself, along with his family, friends, collaborators, and more — including late music icons B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix and George Harrison. ›››

Watch: Jordan Vogt-Roberts' Live-Action Trailer for 'Destiny 2' Game

    Destiny 2 Trailer

“It’s time to bring out the big guns.” Time for something a bit different than the movie trailers we normally see, but still totally fun. Filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts (director of Kong: Skull Island and The Kings of Summer) has made a live-action trailer for the new video game Destiny 2 from Bungie. Sometimes we’ll post one of these game trailers because it’s live-action and because it’s directed by a talented filmmaker who usually makes movies. That’s certainly the case with this, and it’s a very amusing trailer set to Beastie Boys “Sabotage”. Vogt-Roberts has also been posting some behind-the-scenes footage and photos on his Twitter recently, to give us an inside look at the process of making this trailer. If you want to pick up a copy of the video game, it’s already available now. Fire it up. And then back to our regularly scheduled movie coverage. ›››

  • Second Trailer for George Clooney's Dark Comedy Movie 'Suburbicon'

Second Trailer for George Clooney's Dark Comedy Movie 'Suburbicon'

    Suburbicon

“Any new progress on the investigation?” Paramount has debuted a second official trailer for Suburbicon, the Coen Brothers dark comedy directed by George Clooney. This premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals recently, and will hit theaters next month for those who still want to see it. Set in 1959 in a “peaceful, idyllic suburban community” that is rattled by a home invasion, a death starts to reveal the town’s “dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence”. Starring Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Noah Jupe, Megan Ferguson, Jack Conley, and Oscar Isaac. This new trailer sell this much differently than the first trailer, which is a bit deceptive in what it’s showing us. This trailer also has a bunch of quotes from critics, including two from yours truly in my Venice review. I’m happy to support a film I enjoyed quite a bit. ›››
