'Star Wars: Episode IX' Release Date Pushed Back to December 2019

    Star Wars: Episode IX

Briefly: Major news from Lucasfilm/Disney today. It has been officially announced that J.J. Abrams will return to direct Star Wars: Episode IX, replacing director Colin Trevorrow who left the project last week. The announcement also mentions that Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio (Oscar winning writer of Argo, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League). Episode IX was originally scheduled for release in May of 2019, but Disney has also pushed the official release date back until December 20th, 2019. This isn’t really a surprise, considering Episodes VII and VIII are both December releases as well, and it makes sense they want to follow that tradition. By now, a new Star Wars is becoming the perfect annual holiday treat for moviegoers all over the world. That’s the latest Star Wars news, no other info was revealed. ›››

  • Robert Englund in Official Trailer for Horror Thriller Film 'Nightworld'

Robert Englund in Official Trailer for Horror Thriller Film 'Nightworld'

    Nightworld Trailer

“What do you keep back there, King Kong?” Gravitas Ventures has unveiled a trailer for an indie horror thriller film titled Nightworld, from Chilean director Patricio Valladares. The story follows a former LAPD officer who gets a night security job at an old apartment building in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia. But he soon discovers the building has a “malevolent force nestled deep in the bowels” that wants to break free and enter our world. Jason London stars (and he looks a lot like Greg Kinnear), along with horror icon Robert Englund, plus Gianni Capaldi, Lorina Kamburova, Diana Lyubenova, and Atanas Srebrev. This really doesn’t look that great, but maybe that’s just me. The big door is the coolest part about it. See below. ›››

  • Liam Neeson Gets Into Trouble on a Train in Trailer for 'The Commuter'

Liam Neeson Gets Into Trouble on a Train in Trailer for 'The Commuter'

    The Commuter Trailer

“What do you want from me?!” Lionsgate has revealed the first official trailer for a new action-thriller train movie starring Liam Neeson, titled The Commuter. From the same director of Non-Stop (the airplane movie) and The Shallows, this movie is basically Unstoppable (the train movie) meets Non-Stop (or even Source Code). Neeson plays an insurance salesman who gets mixed up in a criminal conspiracy on his daily commute home via train. Vera Farmiga, a “mysterious stranger”, sits with him for a chat and things get very interesting, very quick. The cast includes Patrick Wilson, Killian Scott, Jonathan Banks, Sam Neill, Elizabeth McGovern, Florence Pugh, and Damson Idris. I quite like the setup for this, the way Farmiga talks to him and tells him what to do very nonchalantly, I just hope it lives up to the full potential. ›››

See James Franco as Tommy Wiseau in Full 'The Disaster Artist' Trailer

    The Disaster Artist Trailer

“Nobody respect my vision!” This is going to be an instant classic. A24 has debuted the full-length official trailer for James Franco’s The Disaster Artist, the film telling the story of infamous filmmaker Tommy Wiseau and his worst-movie-ever-made The Room (released in 2003). This just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival to a standing ovation. The film stars James Franco, who also directs, as Tommy Wiseau, the awkward mastermind behind the awful-but-beloved film. The impressive ensemble includes Seth Rogen, Alison Brie, Zoey Deutch, Zac Efron, Dave Franco, Bryan Cranston, Kristen Bell, Eliza Coupe, Josh Hutcherson, Sharon Stone, Adam Scott, Jason Mantzoukas, Kate Upton, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Ari Graynor, with an appearance by Judd Apatow. This looks amazing, actually. Franco looks pretty much pitch perfect and word is he even stayed in character on set for the entire time. Have fun. ›››

  • Full Trailer for Alexander Payne's Human Shrinking Film 'Downsizing'

Full Trailer for Alexander Payne's Human Shrinking Film 'Downsizing'

    Downsizing Trailer

“Nervous?” “Uh, a little…” Paramount has just unveiled the full trailer for Alexander Payne’s Downsizing, which premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festival to mixed reviews. This social satire from Payne is a hugely ambitious film where the Norwegians have invented a method to shrink humans down to a very small size – about 4 inches. The story follows Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig as a married couple who decide to get the procedure in order to live a happier, better life in a tiny city – and save the environment while at it. The cast includes Christoph Waltz, Laura Dern, Jason Sudeikis, Neil Patrick Harris, Udo Kier, Kerri Kenney, and Hong Chau. This is such a kooky concept and Payne takes it to some very weird places, as hinted at in this trailer. It’s definitely worth a watch because this is so unlike anything else. ›››

Explore Halloween Houses in 'Haunters: The Art Of The Scare' Trailer

Haunters: The Art Of The Scare Trailer

“Now we’ve got this entire, dark, almost underground world of extreme haunts.” Who doesn’t love haunted houses? Oh right, most people who don’t like to be scared. An official trailer has debuted for a documentary called Haunters: The Art Of The Scare, a fun exploration and celebration of the horrifying glory of (Halloween) haunted houses. It starts by taking a look at the popularity of haunted houses, then goes deeper into exploring the rise of extreme haunted house experiences, that go beyond the normal into the realm of truly terrifying. This reminds me of another doc about haunted houses from just a few years ago, titled The American Scream. However, this one seems to go even further into the extreme and show us some of the latest utterly frightening experiences. The film will premiere at FantasticFest before hitting VOD in October. ›››

  • Follow a Young Drifter in Nanfu Wang's Doc 'I Am Another You' Trailer

Follow a Young Drifter in Nanfu Wang's Doc 'I Am Another You' Trailer

    I Am Another You Trailer

“Nanfu pulls apart the American dream from the inside out.” FilmRise has unveiled an official trailer for the documentary I Am Another You, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival this year and won a Special Jury Prize for “Excellence in Documentary Storytelling”. Made by Chinese director Nanfu Wang, she follows a young drifter around America, a boy named Dylan who left a comfortable home for a “life of intentional homelessness.” All of this seems very intriguing, not only the way she presents herself as part of the story, but also the way it captures his life and explores his freedom and personality as a drifter. This is also an affecting trailer without any dialogue, it sells me more than something with talking in it. Take a look. ›››

    The Opera House Doc Trailer

“Everybody wanted more…” “The chandeliers happened as an accident.” The New York Film Festival has unveiled an official trailer for the documentary The Opera House, which is getting a special premiere at the festival this October. The Opera House is a profile of the world-renowned, iconic Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in New York City. The film examines its history and development, beginning as the old opera house on 39th Street, before being rebuilt at Lincoln Center in 1966. This iconic building is known around the world, and has featured in many movies, TV shows, and is also the home of the Metropolitan Opera Company, and the American Ballet Theatre during the summer. I very much enjoy documentaries like this, they’re so totally fascinating with such extensive historical details and information. I’d love to see this. ›››

Skip This: First Teaser Trailer for the Final Chapter 'Fifty Shades Freed'

    Fifty Shades Freed Trailer

“All that I have is now yours.” Ugh. Guns and sex, what else? Exactly the kind of mindless entertainment Americans will eat right up. Universal has debuted the first teaser trailer for Fifty Shades Freed, the final sequel in the Fifty Shades series. You have our permission to completely ignore this and move right along. Fifty Shades Freed is actually directed by the director of Glengarry Glen Ross, which is big get, but oh well. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan return, starring alongside a massive ensemble cast: Eric Johnson, Eloise Mumford, Rita Ora, Luke Grimes, Victor Rasuk, Max Martini, Callum Keith Rennie, Bruce Altman, Arielle Kebbel, Robinne Lee, Brant Daugherty, with Kim Basinger and Marcia Gay Harden. This doesn’t look any better than the others. Skip it and just forget it, not even worth a watch. ›››

Venice 2017: 'The Shape of Water' & 'Foxtrot' Win Top Prizes at Venezia

Guillermo del Toro - Venice Film Festival

The 74th Venice Film Festival wrapped up this weekend on the Lido, and the awards were handed out. The top prize at Venice is a Golden Lion (in honor of the iconic lion that is the symbol of the city) and it’s one of the greatest achievements in cinema, along with the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. This year’s big winner is Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy love story The Shape of Water, starring Sally Hawkins as a lonely woman who falls in love with a fish creature at a secret lab (read my review). The runner-up prize went to Foxtrot, another brilliant film, this one criticizing modern life in Israel (read my review). I’m very happy about these two, and all of the Venice prizes (more below). An exciting first year at the festival for me. ›››
