This already premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, and also played at the London, Montana, Leiden, Hawaii, and San Diego Asian Film Festivals last fall. Watch: Rock n’ Roll Band Trans Survival Story Short Film ‘Jesse Jams’

    Jesse Jams Short Film

“We just make music, and have fun, and laugh all the time.” Rock out with Jesse Jams! A fantastic “rock doc” short film to be inspired by. Jesse is a rock n’ roll survivor. He is an Indigenous trans man who grew up in care and endured years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Why make a film about him and his band? “He has a list of mental health diagnoses as long as your arm, but Jesse has developed his own way to cope with his day-to-day challenges: rock n’ roll. The film follows Jesse for a week of his life, as he makes his way to recording sessions, rehearsals, sound checks, and finally a full set with his band at Edmonton’s summer music festival – Interstellar Rodeo. Jesse’s songs are the way into his story: there’s a whole life behind those lyrics.” Don’t write this one off! It’s an awesome and inspiring story about the power of music. ›››

Watch: Gorgeous, Inspiring Short ‘Holy Dog’ Starring Brady Jandreau

    Holy Dog Short Film

“If there’s something you wanna see, if there’s something you wanna do, put your head down and go for it because… nobody knows when God’s going to call their name.” Oh my, what a beautiful short film. Holy Dog is a short film made by Shern Sharma starring American cowboy Brady Jandreau – the very same Brady who starred in the outstanding film The Rider. This is kinda a follow-up to that, following Brady after his traumatic injuring riding a bucking bronco. In this short, he heads down to the Patagonia highlands in South America (the city seen in this is Santiago, Chile, though they also used Argentinian film services). I just love how poetic and moving and inspiring Brady’s words are. Especially the part about how people have “forgotten about just living” and how we can’t choose our passions but we can embrace them. A must watch. ›››

Watch: Award-Winning Horror Short Film ‘Here There Be Monsters’

Here There Be Monsters Short Film

Time to let the monsters loose. Here There Be Monsters is a new horror short film made by Australian filmmaker Drew Macdonald. The film originally played at 50+ festivals around the world including Sitges, Hollyshorts, Screamfest and many more genre favs, and has won multiple awards along the way. To escape incessant bullying on the bus ride home, a young girl falls asleep, only to wake up trapped at an empty bus yard, with something fearsome lurking outside. Drew describes the short as “a throwback creature feature mixed with a contemporary story about bullying.” The monster design in this is quite gnarly, which adds to the eeriness of the whole thing. Here There Be Monsters stars Savannah Foran McDaniel as Elki; plus Jordan Small, Brad McMurray, Toby Barron as the monster. Aside from the creature, it’s impressive there’s no dialogue in this short yet you can understand exactly what’s going on and all the emotions. Enjoy. ›››

An Imaginary Friend Terrorizes a Family in Trailer for ‘Z’ Horror Film

    Z Horror Trailer

“He saw you, too…” Shudder has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled simply Z, the latest from director Brandon Christensen (of 2017’s Still/Born previously). This originally premiered at the Overlook Film Festival last year, and is debuting to watch on Shudder this May. A family find themselves terrorized by their eight-year-old son’s imaginary (or not?) friend that he calls “Z”. Another tale of “parental terror” from the filmmaker behind Still/Born. The film stars Keegan Connor Tracy, Jett Klyne, Sean Rogerson, Sara Canning, and Stephen McHattie. It doesn’t particularly seem like anything we haven’t seen before, but the creepy monster reveal is a bit jolting. Horror fans definitely don’t want to miss this one. ›››

  • First Trailer for Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Proximity’ from Director Eric Demeusy

First Trailer for Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Proximity’ from Director Eric Demeusy

    Proximity Trailer

“We have to be there when they come!” Whoa, what the?! Shout Studios has released the official trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller titled Proximity, marking the feature directorial debut of VFX artist / filmmaker Eric Demeusy. This looks awesome! A surprise indie sci-fi film we’ve never heard of before. An “enthralling sci-fi thriller, Proximity is an engaging exploration of the unknown.” A young NASA scientist is abducted by extraterrestrials and returns, but no one believes him. Of course. He becomes obsessed with finding proof “which leads him on a journey of discovery.” Though from the looks of it, there’s much more than just that going on in here. Starring Ryan Masson, Highdee Kuan, Christian Prentice, Shaw Jones, and Don Scribner. I’m completely sold by this trailer. Doesn’t look too low budget or cheesy. From what I can tell, a smart filmmaker is using his talent and limited resources to tell a big story in an engaging and exciting way. ›››
