  • Review: Super Mega Baseball 3 – A Golden Era for Virtual Baseball Continues

    Deserving of the superlatives.

Don’t pay too much mind to the freakish aesthetics of Super Mega Baseball 3’s fictional stars: this cartoony sports sequel has all the trappings of a true simulation, but it’s all packed up in an alarmingly accessible wrapper. It means that practically anyone can step up to the plate and knock out a Home Run or three, but there’s more than enough depth to keep baseball fans in the bullpen once the initial novelty wears thin.

The highlight addition to this, er, edition is the new multi-season Franchise mode, which sees you balancing your salary cap and developing players in order to build a virtual dynasty of your own. The management aspects are more straightforward than what you’ll find in MLB The Show 20 but are no less pleasing, tasking you with balancing a salary cap and investing in player development in order to build the ultimate team.

  • Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath’s Gory Gameplay Trailer Shows Off New Characters

    Sheeva, Fujin, and RoboCop gameplay.

In case you missed the memo, Mortal Kombat 11 is getting a substantial expansion later this month named Aftermath. In addition to delving deeper into the storyline with this DLC, it’s bringing three new playable characters to the fore. Sheeva and Fujin are returning fighters from previous entries, while guest character RoboCop is a first.

In this new gameplay trailer, you see each of the new trio going toe to toe with other opponents. The gameplay is gory as ever; Sheeva’s four-armed brute strength, Fujin’s wind-based powers, and RoboCop’s gadgets and guns make for entertaining viewing. We even get to see the latter doing battle with the Terminator, which will make action movie fans very happy indeed.

  • Free FIFA 20 Added to PS4’s EA Access Vault

    No neutral venues needed.

Real-world football may be on hiatus in most parts of the world, but FIFA 20 is about to get a jolt of life as it’s been added to the EA Access Vault. This means that existing subscribers to the PlayStation 4 service can download and play the soccer sim without spending a penny, which is great news for those enduring footie withdrawal symptoms while the sport is put on hold.

It’s not the only recent addition to the service, as NHL 20 was also added late last month. You can see a full list of all free EA Access games on PS4 through the link.

  • Summer Game Fest ‘Special Showcase Event’ Announced for Wednesday

    Showtime.

Bloody hell, it’s getting harder to keep track of all these digital events and showings isn’t it? Fortunately for you, we’ll soon have a way to keep track of everything right here on Push Square in the near future — but all you need to know right now is that there’ll be a ‘Special Showcase Event’ happening this Wednesday (that’s the 13th May) as part of Summer Game Fest.

There are no hints as to what this might be about — it’s just been announced by Geoff Keighley over on Twitter. There’s a good chance that it’ll be some kind of next-gen reveal, and we assume that it’s going to revolve around a single game since Keighley also says there’ll be an interview. It all kicks off at 8AM Pacific time, or 4PM UK time.

  • Soapbox: PS5 Will Be Sold on the Strength of Its Sequels

    And that’s a good thing.

This industry craves new intellectual property at every opportunity, but I believe the PlayStation 5 will be sold on the strength of its sequels. Sony has been excellent at re-imagining its roster of franchises every generation: Naughty Dog famously ditched Jak & Daxter in favour of Uncharted; Sucker Punch moved away from Sly Cooper in order to create inFAMOUS; and Guerrilla Games built its best game yet when it substituted Killzone for Horizon Zero Dawn.

But while I always anticipate these all-new projects, it’s the follow-ups to the PlayStation 4’s biggest hits that have me most hyped for its next-gen successor. This is testament to the sheer number of outstanding IP the manufacturer has introduced over the course of the past seven or so years, and with its bevy of first-party teams equipped to improve on these titles, I genuinely believe that we’re in for a vintage generation with the PS5.

  • Mafia Social Media Springs into Life Amid New Game, Remaster Rumours

    Strictly business.

Mafia III may have had its shortcomings, but 2K Games’ crime series continues to have a lot of spirit. And now, amid rumours of a Mafia II remaster and a full-blown sequel, the franchise’s social media account has sprung into life. Writing on Twitter for the first time in almost two years, the account simply said: “Family.”

2K Games confirmed earlier in the year that a new Mafia from developer Hangar 13 will be revealed this year, while various ratings for Mafia II: Definitive Edition leaked last month. Geoff Keighley is scheduled to reveal a new title as part of his Summer Game Fest on 12th May, so we wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some kind of connection here.

  • PlayStation Store Suspended Indefinitely in China

    No roadmap for return.

Sony has suspended the PlayStation Store in China, with no guarantee of when it will return. According to the organisation’s official Weibo account, it’s been taken down due to a “security upgrade” – although unsurprisingly, the virtual plaza remains open for business around the rest of the globe.

According to analyst Daniel Ahmad, an “Xbox fanboy claimed on Weibo that they reported to authorities certain back door elements that are easily accessible to switch to overseas services”. The PS Store was subsequently taken offline.

  • PS5’s Price Could Be Undercut by Xbox Series X, Analysts Suggest

    Sticky situation.

Speaking as part of a live episode of Geoff Keighley’s Bonus Round this week, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter suggested that Microsoft may undercut the price of the PlayStation 5 this holiday. According to the industry analyst, he thinks Sony will charge $500 for its next-gen console, giving its Redmond competitor the opportunity to take a big loss – and charge consumers less for the Xbox Series X.

“Microsoft has a big balance sheet,” he pointed out. “If they want to cut the price by $100 and subsidise the first 10 million, they will. So, I think they’re waiting to have Sony blink first, and then they’ll reveal the price and launch date. It’s going to be Holiday 2020, so very likely in November and very likely $400.”

  • Random: Mark Cerny’s PS5 Tech Talk Has Been Turned Into a Relaxing ASMR Video

    Yes, really.

We all know that PlayStation 5’s lead system architect, Mark Cerny, has the most soothing voice in the games industry. He always speaks in a relaxed tone, as though he’s reading us all a bedtime story. It’s never not a pleasure to listen to the man talk, even when it’s about next-gen mumbo jumbo. Why not take advantage of his smooth vocals and turn him into the ASMR genius he was born to be? One person has had such an idea, and we’ve ended up with the above.

Cerny’s entire, hour-long ‘Road to PS5’ presentation is included here, but with added reverb and ambient music to really help you feel relaxed. ASMR — which stands for autonomous sensory meridian response — is a tingling sensation you feel when you hear certain audio, and it’s a little different for each person. While the popular YouTube trend typically involves binaural sound, you won’t find any of that here. There’s no glass-tapping or crisp-eating going on in this video. It’s more of a meditative, sleepy experience, and in that respect it’s hilariously effective. If you’re having trouble nodding off, plug in Cerny and have him sooth you to sleep with talk of solid state drives and power consumption.

  • Madcap Multiplayer PS4 Title Fall Guys Looks Colourful and Chaotic in New Trailer

    Mean beans.

We’ve not seen much of Fall Guys for quite a while, so it’s nice to have this new trailer from publisher Devolver Digital. The game, which is sort of like a mix between Takeshi’s Castle and Gang Beasts, pits dozens of online players against each other in a series of elimination rounds with a wide variety of rules. You might need to choose a wall and hope it breaks; maybe you need to play soccer with an oversized ball; maybe you just have to survive an obstacle course. It looks brilliantly silly.

This new trailer highlights the zany gameplay, showing off several types of round. You dress up your fall guy, survive as many stages as possible, and try to be the first to the crown at the end. It’s kind of a take on battle royale, but it feels more like a game show than anything else.
