    Earth: One Amazing Day Trailer

“Our planet is unique…” BBC Films has unveiled the first official trailer for the documentary film Earth: One Amazing Day, the sequel to the stunning nature documentary Earth from 2007. Earth was a feature-length documentary version of the TV series “Planet Earth”, and this one is also once again a feature-length version of the follow-up TV series “Planet Earth II” – which aired on BBC in 2016. This features a narration by Robert Redford, and presents a vivid look at one full day on our planet. “Told with humour, intimacy, emotion and a jaw-dropping sense of cinematic splendour, Earth: One Amazing Day is the enchanting big screen-family friendly adventure that spectacularly highlights how every day is filled with more unseen dramas and wonders than you can possibly imagine.” This looks wonderful and awe-inspiring in many ways. ›››

Mysterious Story of Dutch Couple's Local Troubles in 'Santoalla' Trailer

    Santoalla Trailer

“And what do you think happened?” Oscilloscope Labs has debuted an official trailer for the acclaimed documentary Santoalla, described as a “a true crime film as gripping as Making a Murderer or Serial.” The intimate documentary tells the story of a Dutch couple, Martin and Margo Verfondern, who moved to a remote Spanish village on the island of Santoalla to start a new life living off of the land. Things seemed to be great at first but eventually they had some conflicts with the local Spanish residents, and then one day Martin disappeared. This doc tries to investigate what happened and looks back at the story of this couple and their desire for a good life. “As this once forgotten landscape is thrust into the center of controversy, Margo finds herself searching not only for answers, but for the strength to persevere.” This looks a bit scary. ›››

KVIFF Review: 'The White World According to Daliborek' Doc is Daring

The White World According to Daliborek Review

Meet Dalibor. He’s an industrial painter from the Czech Republic, still living with his mom even though he’s almost 40 years old. Dalibor is a neo-Nazi, who doesn’t believe that concentration camps were used to kill anyone. He spends his free time drinking with a friend, playing video games, and making weird YouTube videos with cheesy voice distortion and cheap video filters. The White World According to Daliborek is a documentary that follows Dalibor (he’s called Daliborek in the English title) as he shows us around his world. While at first it seems like no one is challenging him, slowly but surely he is confronted by the truth. I’ve never come across anything like this documentary before, it’s utterly fascinating and impressively calm. ›››

  • Harry Dean Stanton in First Trailer for Spiritual Journey Film 'Lucky'

Harry Dean Stanton in First Trailer for Spiritual Journey Film 'Lucky'

    Lucky Trailer

“I know the truth, and the truth matters. And you have to face that and accept it.” Magnolia Pictures has debuted an official trailer for a special indie comedy titled Lucky, starring Harry Dean Stanton as the character “Lucky”. As the official description explains, the film is not only a “love letter to the life and career of Harry Dean Stanton“, but also a “meditation on morality, loneliness, spirituality, and human connection” telling the story of a 90-year-old atheist. And it looks damn good. Co-starring Ron Livingston, Ed Begley Jr., Tom Skerritt, Beth Grant, as well as filmmaker David Lynch as “Howard”. I’m very curious to see this just to hear everything Harry Dean Stanton has to say, maybe there’s some valuable wisdom to pick up from someone who has lived this kind of long life. Besides that, it looks like it has some good laughs. Enjoy. ›››

Official Trailer for Bill Watterson's Indie Comedy 'Dave Made a Maze'

    Dave Made a Maze Trailer

“If you want to survive this fantasy world, think outside the boxes.” Holy mackerel, this looks amazing!! Gravitas has unveiled an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Dave Made a Maze, about an artist who builds a huge fort in his living room out of cardboard. The clever concept here is that as soon as you enter the maze, it turns into something much bigger. Dave builds the maze out of pure frustration, only to end up trapped by the “fantastical pitfalls, booby traps, and critters of his own creation.” This stars Nick Thune, Meera Rohit Kumbhani, James Urbaniak, Stephanie Allynne, Kirsten Vangsness, plus Scott Krinsky. Ohh it looks like it’s going to be so, so much fun, kind of like Michel Gondry meets the Duplass Brothers, or something like that. This really does seem like a certified instant cult classic. I’m ready to enter. ›››

KVIFF Review: 'Axolotl Overkill' is Youthful Berlin Craziness at its Best

    Axolotl Overkill Review

What is like to grow up as a teen without any limits in modern Berlin? Axolotl Overkill shows us exactly what that life is like, and it’s as wild and crazy and totally nonchalant as you might expect. Adapted from a book by Helene Hegemann, Axolotl Overkill follows 16-year-old Mifti around Berlin, as she goes to clubs and parties, drinking and smoking and doing drugs, sleeping wherever, and whenever, with whomever she wants. The film is written and directed by Helene Hegemann, adapting her own novel, and stars German native Jasna Fritzi Bauer as the carefree teen. As aimless as the film is, I couldn’t help find it thoroughly engaging and impressively entertaining. Not all of it makes sense, but then again, neither does life anyway. ›››

    True to the Game Trailer

“There’s nothing that he has that we can’t take.” Imani Motion Pictures has debuted a trailer for a crime drama titled True to the Game, based on the novel of the same name written by Teri Woods. The film is about a charismatic drug lord, played by Columbus Short, who falls for a young girl from Philadelphia. He begins planning a way out of the crime world with his love for her, but tragedy strikes just as he is about to start his new life. The entire cast includes Vivica A. This trailer looks solid, with some promise in the performances more than anything else. Might be worth a quick look. ›››

Review: 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' is the Best Spider-Man Movie Yet

    Spider-Man: Homecoming Review

Created by Stan Lee & Steve Ditko, Spider-Man first appeared in 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15, an anthology series published by Marvel Comics. The character’s origin story goes something like this: Midtown High’s only professional wallflower, Peter Parker, becomes a web-slinging “wall-crawler” when he is bitten by a radioactive spider and acquires the proportionate strength and agility of an arachnid. 55 years later, Spider-Man has become one of the most popular superheroes ever, inspiring countless comics, cartoons, video games, and not one but two film franchises: Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy (2002-2007) and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man series (2012-2014). Those movies, produced and distributed by Sony, have their moments, but ultimately fail to deliver a definitive take on the character. Enter the appropriately titled Spider-Man: Homecoming, a new film co-produced by Marvel Studios proving third time’s the charm. ›››

KVIFF Review: 'Freak Show' is an Optimistic Story About Being Yourself

    Freak Show Review

There are plenty of great films in recent years about finding yourself and staying true to who you are deep down. Freak Show is another one of these films, but it has a refreshingly optimistic feel to it that makes it stand out. I’m not sure how this film got lost in the mix – it first premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, but hasn’t played at any other festivals in America yet. I caught it at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival and it’s an entertaining, enjoyable, optimistic story about personal identity and fighting back against bullies (not with violence, but with pride and courage). Alex Lawther stars a young, gay high school student named Billy Bloom who dresses up lavishly every day (think: Lady Gaga) yet the film isn’t so much about homosexuality as it is about being totally yourself, and finding a way to survive even if you don’t fit in with everyone else. ›››
