  • First Trailer for Alison Maclean's 'The Rehearsal' Premiering at TIFF

    The Rehearsal Trailer

“So what happens here? And what can you do to minimize the damage?” The first trailer has arrived for a film playing at this year’s Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) called The Rehearsal, from Canadian director Alison Maclean. It’s a complex drama about a first-year acting student who “mines his girlfriend’s family scandal as material for the end-of-year show at drama school.” Yeah, that sounds a bit crazy, but this looks damn good. James Rolleston stars, along with Ella Edward, Alice Englert, Kerry Fox and Michelle Ny. I am expecting some exceptional performances from a film about acting, and from what I can tell, there will be plenty. The song featured in this is “Fragile” (MCHNCL Remix) by Maya Payne & Kabyn Walley. See below. ›››

Watch: Full Red Band Trailer for 'Bad Santa 2' with Billy Bob Thornton

    Bad Santa 2 Trailer

“You need a hug from Santa!” Broad Green has unveiled a new NSFW red band trailer for Bad Santa 2, the sequel to the holiday comedy Bad Santa (from 2003), starring Billy Bob Thornton as an alcoholic Santa Clause impersonator who uses his cover to pull off large scale robberies. He’s back again after 13 years to pull off more heists and get in all kinds of trouble. The cast includes Tony Cox (his sidekick/accomplice from the first movie), Kathy Bates, Christina Hendricks, Ryan Hansen, plus Brett Kelly back as Thurman Merman, who seems to have a big part in the story. The first short teaser a few weeks ago didn’t show much, but with this trailer we actually get a look at what’s to come and it doesn’t seem so bad. Enjoy. ›››

  • Milla Jovovich in First Brief Teaser for 'Resident Evil: The Final Chapter'

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Trailer

“We’ve played a long game, you and I, but now it’s over.” Screen Gems has debuted the first teaser trailer for the sixth Resident Evil movie, and apparently the final one, as it’s called Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Not only is writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson back to finish the series he started, so is actress Milla Jovovich as Alice, who must return to Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse. The full cast includes Ruby Rose, Ali Larter, Iain Glen, Shawn Roberts, William Levy, Eoin Macken, Rola and Lee Joon-Gi. This definitely looks like one big all-out, epic grand finale but I’ve been tired of this series for a long time and it doesn’t exactly make me interested again. Plus there’s still way too much CGI. Worth a look anyway. ›››

  • Watch: James Caan Gets Haunted in First 'The Good Neighbor' Trailer

Watch: James Caan Gets Haunted in First 'The Good Neighbor' Trailer

    The Good Neighbor Trailer

“Be careful how far we push this guy…” Vertical Entertainment has released a trailer for the thriller The Good Neighbor, from director Kasra Farahani, which first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival this year. James Caan stars as a grumpy old man living next door to some teenagers who attempt to pull a trick on him and make him believe his house is haunted. They setup cameras and try to capture it all on video, but end up seeing “much more than they bargained for.” Logan Miller and Keir Gilchrist stars as the kids who try to pull this off. I’m intrigued by the concept for this, it looks fun but also freaky, and of course the discovery of what’s really going on better be good. Caan looks like he’ll be intense to watch. Fire it up below. ›››

  • Catch Thom Andersen's New Short Film 'A Train Arrives at the Station'

A Train Arrives at the Station

If you love cinematic documentaries and/or if you love trains, this is a must watch. Grasshopper Film has released a short film online called A Train Arrives at the Station, featuring 26 different scenes from various films through history showing trains arriving into or departing from stations. It’s the latest work from filmmaker Thom Andersen, who made the outstanding documentary Los Angeles Play Itself (which you can rent on iTunes), profiling how the city has appeared in cinema over the years. The short features footage of films ranging from Ozu’s The Only Son to Andrew Dominik’s The Assassination of Jesse James. I’m admittedly a huge train nerd, so this is totally something I am instantly in love with and want to watch over and over. The full short film is only available for a limited time online, so watch this while you still can. ›››

  • McConaughey in Official US Trailer for Gus Van Sant's 'The Sea of Trees'

McConaughey in Official US Trailer for Gus Van Sant's 'The Sea of Trees'

    The Sea of Trees Trailer

“It is during our darkest, that our loved ones are closest.” A24 has unveiled an official trailer for the release of Gus Van Sant’s The Sea of Trees, an emotional drama set in Japan’s mysterious Aokigahara forest, also known as the Suicide Forest (the same place the horror film The Forest takes place). This first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year to mostly negative reviews from critics, which is why there isn’t too much buzz. Matthew McConaughey stars as a suicidal American man who ventures into the forest longing for his wife, played by Naomi Watts, and befriends a Japanese man, played by Ken Watanabe, while he’s wandering around. The cast includes Katie Aselton, Jordan Gavaris and James Saito. We featured the Japanese trailer back in March, but this new US trailer looks better, like it actually might be worth seeing. ›››

  • Extended TV Spot Revealed for Disney Animation's Musical 'Moana'

Extended TV Spot Revealed for Disney Animation's Musical 'Moana'

    Disney's Moana Extended TV Spot

“Let’s save the world!” Disney debuted a new extended TV spot for the musical Moana during their Rio Olympics coverage. This musical is the latest from Disney Animation and co-directors Ron Clements and John Musker (of The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, The Princess and the Frog) and is an adventure about a kick ass Hawaiian princess named Moana. We also finally get a good look at the big villain, the Lava Witch, who seems pretty gnarly in this. Auli’i Cravalho voices Moana, and the rest of the cast includes Dwayne Johnson, Alan Tudyk, Phillipa Soo, Temuera Morrison, and Jemaine Clement. So this looks like it might actually be really good, with lots going on in the story. What are those coconut monsters?! ›››

  • Explore Kubo's Realm in Interactive Map for 'Kubo and the Two Strings'

    Kubo and the Two Strings

“Sun Village is the true heart of the Vastlands.” Focus Features has released a very cool interactive video on YouTube for the upcoming release of Laika’s stop-motion animated film Kubo and the Two Strings. I still think this looks amazing and I can’t wait to see it, plus it’s refreshing to see completely original content made with such passionate attention-to-detail. They’ve created an interactive map which allows anyone to explore Kubo’s realm and the different locations in the story. It’s always a great challenge to sell an entirely original movie in a market of mostly remakes/reboots, but I’m more than happy to support this film and remind people that it will be in theaters in just a few weeks. We’ve featured a grand total of four trailers for this one so far, but if you want to learn more about the story and the world it takes place in, check this out. ›››

Watch: First Trailer for Paul Schrader's 'Dog Eat Dog' with Nicolas Cage

    Dog Eat Dog Trailer

“You have absolutely no idea how to control your emotions.” The first trailer has debuted for the latest film from American filmmaker Paul Schrader, titled Dog Eat Dog, starring Nicolas Cage and Willem Dafoe. This first premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but didn’t emerge with too much buzz and even worse, it still doesn’t have US distribution in place yet. Dog Eat Dog is about three criminals, fresh out of prison, planning one last score to wrap up their life of crime and get things back on track. “One more hit, one more jackpot, and they’ll all be satisfied.” Of course, it never turns out to be that easy. The cast includes Christopher Matthew Cook, Louisa Krause, Magi Avila, and Schrader himself as “Grecco The Greek”. This trailer is crazy violent, and totally wild, but I’m not sure if that’s good. Dive in. ›››

  • Watch: The Academy's Video About Legendary Title Designer Dan Perri

    Title Designer Dan Perri

“Fonts that are big and bold are more powerful…” It’s always great to see behind-the-scenes people profiled in meaningful ways. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been making outstanding videos called Originals focusing on various filmmaking stories and profiling many of the remarkable people who create the movies we love. This one is about titled designer Dan Perri, who created the title design for Star Wars as well as Taxi Driver and Close Encounters of the Third Kind and so many other films. I love his explanation for Scorsese’s After Hours, how his design actually builds up your heart rate so you’re then ready to watch the film. Another stellar reminder that every single aspect of a film is important. Enjoy. ›››
