First Trailer for Irish Gothic Horror Film 'The Lodgers' Playing at TIFF

    The Lodgers Trailer

“Something is broken in them.” An official trailer has debuted for a gothic horror film from Ireland titled The Lodgers, which is playing at the Toronto Film Festival this month. Set in 1920s, the story is about twins Rachel and Edward who share a strange existence in their crumbling family estate. Each night, the property becomes the domain of a sinister presence (“The Lodgers”) who enforces three rules upon the twins: they must be in bed by midnight; they may not permit an outsider past the threshold; if one attempts to escape, the life of the other is placed in jeopardy. Yeah. Starring Charlotte Vega, Bill Milner, David Bradley, and Eugene Simon. This looks cool, with some very weird visual moment in this trailer. Enjoy. ›››

  • Daniel Radcliffe in New US Trailer for Amazon Survival Thriller 'Jungle'

Daniel Radcliffe in New US Trailer for Amazon Survival Thriller 'Jungle'

    Jungle Trailer

“The only guy who knows where we are, what we’re going to do, and he just walked away!” Momentum Pictures has debuted a new official trailer for the survival thriller titled Jungle, starring Daniel Radcliffe as an adventurous Israeli backpacker who gets lots for three weeks in the Amazon jungle. This is based on the true story of Yossi Ghinsberg (and his book) about an incredible endurance test he had to go through to survive. This starts out similar to the first trailer, but the second half is pretty dizzying, and a tiny reference for how brutal it is to survive in these conditions. In addition to Radcliffe the cast includes Alex Russell, Joel Jackson and Thomas Kretschmann. I’m curious to check this out, it seems intense. Plus it might be an oddly perfect double feature with Radcliffe’s wacky forest survival comedy Swiss Army Man. Dive in. ›››

  • New US Trailer for Ruben Östlund's Brilliant Social Satire 'The Square'

New US Trailer for Ruben Östlund's Brilliant Social Satire 'The Square'

    The Square US Trailer

“We, as a museum, mustn’t be afraid to push boundaries.” Magnolia Pictures has debuted the official US trailer for Ruben Östlund’s latest film The Square, which won the top prize Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year. It’s one of my favorite films this year, a very brilliant social satire about how we think we’re helping but really aren’t. It also skewers the modern art world, and marketing, and the upper class, and so much more. Claes Bang stars as the director of a contemporary art museum in Sweden, but when his phone is stolen it sets off a series of events that lead him to an existential crisis. It also stars Elisabeth Moss, Dominic West, Terry Notary (as the ape!), and Christopher Læssø. I wrote a glowing review in Cannes and I’ve been raving about it ever since, telling everyone I know to check it out. Just go watch this. ›››

  • First Trailer for Stephen King Adaptation of 'Gerald's Game' for Netflix

First Trailer for Stephen King Adaptation of 'Gerald's Game' for Netflix

    Gerald's Game Trailer

“Is this really what it takes these days?” Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for Mike Flanagan’s Gerald’s Game, an adaption of Stephen King’s novel of the same name. Another Stephen King adaptation this year?! Sure, why not. That makes three so far – between this film, It, and The Dark Tower. Unless I’m missing another one? Gerald’s Game stars Carla Gugino as Jessie Burlingame, and Bruce Greenwood as her husband. The two travel out to their lake house to spice up their marriage, and for some fun in the bedroom she’s handcuffed to the bed. When he suddenly dies, she must figure out a way to get out in order to survive. Sounds freaky, doesn’t it? As a Stephen King story, there’s obviously a bit more to it. Take a look. ›››

  • Second Wild, Crazy Trailer for Comedy Sequel 'A Bad Moms Christmas'

Second Wild, Crazy Trailer for Comedy Sequel 'A Bad Moms Christmas'

    A Bad Moms Christmas Trailer

“Can you put a price tag on wonder?” No, I guess you can’t. STX Entertainment has debuted another rowdy new trailer for comedy sequel A Bad Mom’s Christmas, from the same writers and directors behind the smash hit Bad Moms just last year. This new trailer is a bit crazier than the first one, because sure it’s time to go wild. The three “bad moms” from the original, Milas Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn, all return. And this time we get to meet their mothers – played by Cheryl Hines, Christine Baranski and Susan Sarandon. Also starring Jay Hernandez, Peter Gallagher, Justin Hartley, David Walton. This looks uncomfortably entertaining, especially if you’re in the mood for this kind of raucous comedy. ›››

  • First Trailer for Getaway Driver Film 'Wheelman' Starring Frank Grillo

First Trailer for Getaway Driver Film 'Wheelman' Starring Frank Grillo

    Wheelman Trailer

“Ready, Set, Go!” Netflix has unveiled an intense first teaser trailer for an action film titled Wheelman, about a “wheelman” getaway driver. We’ve already seen one great film this year about a getaway driver (Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, if you haven’t seen it yet it’s definitely recommended), so why not another? Wheelman seems to be told entirely from the perspective of the driver, with most shots inside the car, taking place over the course of one night and one bank robbery that goes terribly wrong. Frank Grillo stars as the wheelman, with a cast including Garret Dillahunt, Caitlin Carmichael, Wendy Moniz, and William Xifaras. This looks like it could be cool, or at least as a fun late night watch on Netflix. Fire up the engines. ›››

  • First Teaser Trailer for Wild West Thriller 'Hostiles' with Christian Bale

First Teaser Trailer for Wild West Thriller 'Hostiles' with Christian Bale

    Hostiles Teaser Trailer

“Understand this – when we lay our heads down out here, we’re all prisoners…” To go along with the buzz out of the Telluride Film Festival, the first teaser trailer has arrived for Scott Cooper’s new wild west thriller Hostiles. Set in New Mexico in 1892, the film follows a legendary Army captain who reluctantly agrees to escort a Cheyenne war chief and his family through dangerous territory. Christian Bale stars as Captain Joseph J. Blocker, and Wes Studi stars as Yellow Hawk. It’s described as a “heroic odyssey of survival” that “becomes a story not about the miles traveled nor the battles fought, but the journey towards respect, reconciliation, and forgiveness.” The cast includes Rosamund Pike, Ben Foster, Peter Mullan, Jesse Plemons, Stephen Lang, Q’orianka Kilcher, Timothée Chalamet, and Rory Cochrane. This did get quite a few great reviews at Telluride and plays at TIFF next, so keep an eye out for it if you’re intriuged. ›››

  • US Trailer for 'A Fantastic Woman' Starring Trans Actress Daniela Vega

US Trailer for 'A Fantastic Woman' Starring Trans Actress Daniela Vega

    A Fantastic Woman Trailer

“I’m just looking out for my loved ones, that’s all.” Sony Pictures Classics has unveiled an official US trailer for Sebastián Lelio’s acclaimed drama A Fantastic Woman, from Chile, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival this year to quite a bit of international acclaim. The films stars transgender actress Daniela Vega as Marina, a transgender woman living in Chile who must deal with the challenges of oppression and hate when her older lover suddenly passes away. His family rejects her and everything seems to start falling apart in her life. The cast includes Francisco Reyes, Luis Gnecco, Aline Küppenheim, and Nicolás Saavedra. I saw this film at Berlinale and it’s good, but it didn’t totally win me over. It’s still an important film for trans actors and trans storytelling, and deserves attention for that reason. Definitely worth a look. ›››

  • Lin Shaye Returns in Trailer for Horror Sequel 'Insidious: The Last Key'

Lin Shaye Returns in Trailer for Horror Sequel 'Insidious: The Last Key'

    Insidious: The Last Key Trailer

“This one is different, though. The haunted house is my family’s house.” Universal has unveiled an official trailer for the horror sequel Insidious: The Last Key, also known as just Insidious 4, since this is the latest in this on-going horror franchise. Perhaps the final sequel considering it’s called The Last Key? Lin Shaye returns as Dr. Elise Rainier, the brilliant parapsychologist who ends up being terrorized in her own home by the demons that have been haunting houses ever since Insidious in 2010. Shaye is joined in the cast by Angus Sampson, Leigh Whannell, Josh Stewart, Caitlin Gerard, Kirk Acevedo, Javier Botet, Bruce Davison, Spencer Locke, Tessa Ferrer, Ava Kolker and Marcus Henderson. I was into the first two Insidious films, but totally lost interest after it became a “franchise”. Have a look if you want. ›››

  • Venice 2017: Darren Aronofsky's Intense 'Mother!' Takes on the World

Venice 2017: Darren Aronofsky's Intense 'Mother!' Takes on the World

    Mother! Review

This is what happens when you make someone angry. Darren Aronofsky’s latest film, Mother! (or officially titled mother! with the lowercase M), is an incredibly intense, heart-pounding cinematic experience. Based on the reactions this morning at the first screenings at the Venice Film Festival, it’s going to be the kind of film you either love or hate. And it’s going to be discussed and debated endlessly in great depth, which is actually the sign of an excellent film. It’s a very bold, straight-in-your-face attempt to address many of the world’s problems by using various characters and one house as a metaphor for, well, the world we live on. Darren doesn’t hold back, letting it build and build into something so breathtaking and shocking, it’s hard not to love it, unless you’ve missed the entire point of it. This is the slap in the face society needs right now. ›››
