Always Be Watching – I've Already Seen Over 200 Films in 2018 So Far

    200 Films

Thank goodness for Letterboxd. I was originally going to title this article “Hitting My Mark”, but I’d rather go with the catchphrase “Always Be Watching” – meaning, simply, always be watching films. New films, old films, big films, small films, just keep watching. It’s my mantra and has been for years, since the early days of running this website. If I don’t want to watch a film that was just released, there’s always (always!) more old films to watch. And there’s always something that I haven’t yet seen to watch. As someone whose job it is to watch movies, my goal is to fit in a movie every day. It’s not always possible, but I try. This year I decided to keep track of all the films I’ve seen using the wonderful Letterboxd, so I can actually keep count and look back at it all. It’s the end of July and I’m already over 200 films. Do I get a medal? Nah, I just need sleep. ›››

  • New Teaser Trailer for Hynoptic Thriller 'Luz' Playing at Fantastic Fest

New Teaser Trailer for Hynoptic Thriller 'Luz' Playing at Fantastic Fest

    Luz Teaser Trailer

Time to meet Luz. Yellow Veil Pictures has released an entrancing new teaser trailer for a hypnotic thriller titled Luz, from German filmmaker Tilman Singer. This already premiered at the Berlin Film Festival this year, and played Fantasia in the summer; it will next stop by Fantastic Fest and the Sitges Film Festival later this fall. Luz, a young cabdriver, drags herself into the brightly lit entrance of a run-down police station. A demonic entity follows her, determined to finally be close to the woman it loves. Luana Velis stars as Luz, and the full cast includes Johannes Benecke, Jan Bluthardt, Lilli Lorenz, Julia Riedler, and Nadja Stübiger. The film already received some rave reviews at other fests, calling it “unapologetically strange and utterly fearless.” It certainly looks strange, with a very nice, old school vibe. Really digging this teaser. ›››

  • Cute UK Trailer for Indie Comedy 'Dusty & Me' with a Greyhound Dog

Cute UK Trailer for Indie Comedy 'Dusty & Me' with a Greyhound Dog

    Dusty & Me Trailer

“You better be ready to bloody run.” Goldfinch Studios has released a new UK trailer for an indie comedy titled Dusty & Me, a feel-good family film about a boy and his dog. The film was once titled Against the Odds as well as Slapper and Me, but is now being released as Dusty and Me. The plot is about an 18-year-old misfit who befriends a lightning fast Greyhound, comically named Slapper by his older brother. The dog is dognapped by thieves, so Dusty and his love-interest go on a mission to find and rescue Slapper. Dusty & Me stars Genevieve Gaunt, Luke Newberry, Iain Glen, Ian Hart, and Lesley Sharp. This definitely looks as bad as it sounds, but I have a soft spot for dogs and dog movies, so I’m posting this anyway. Enjoy. ›››

  • Official UK Trailer for Gritty, Violent Thriller 'Black 47' Set in Ireland

Official UK Trailer for Gritty, Violent Thriller 'Black 47' Set in Ireland

    Black 47 Trailer

“He’s a danger to us all.” Wildcard Distribution has debuted an official UK trailer for the upcoming release of the film Black 47, a gritty thriller set during the Great Irish Famine. This premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, but it got horrible reviews by most critics. Set in 1847, the film follows a hardened Irish Ranger fighting for the British Army who returns to his home, only to discover the famine has destroyed his country and left the people even more vile and ruthless than ever. With little else to live for, he sets a destructive path to avenge his family. James Frencheville (from Animal Kingdom, The Stanford Prison Experiment) stars, along with Hugo Weaving, Jim Broadbent, Stephen Rea, Freddie Fox, Barry Keoghan, Moe Dunford, Ciaran Grace, and Sarah Greene. I really did not like this film. It has one good action scene, the rest is so dull and boring and excessively violent for no reason. But that’s just my opinion. Check it out. ›››

  • First International Trailer for Lukas Dhont's Acclaimed Trans Film 'Girl'

First International Trailer for Lukas Dhont's Acclaimed Trans Film 'Girl'

    Girl Trailer

“Work harder, or it will be a hopeless situation.” The Match Factory has debuted an international trailer for the acclaimed film titled Girl, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year and won the Camera d’Or for Best First Film. Girl follows a 15-year-old transgender teen, who is trying hard to achieve her goal of becoming a professional ballerina. The film stars Victor Polster as Lara, and gives us an intimate look at the incredible struggles and emotional challenges that she is facing. It’s one of the best films that I saw at Cannes this year, and I wrote in my effusive review: “it’s such an achingly beautiful, emotionally resonant, intelligent, breathtaking film.” The cast includes Arieh Worthalter, Katelijne Damen, and Valentijn Dhaenens. This is a really wonderful film that I hope finds an audience, it deserves to be seen. Take a look. ›››

  • Third Trailer for Ruben Fleischer's 'Venom' Movie Starring Tom Hardy

Third Trailer for Ruben Fleischer's 'Venom' Movie Starring Tom Hardy

    Venom Movie Traielr

“Humans are disposable… But man and symbiote combined – this is the new race.” Whoa!! Sony Pictures has debuted a third official trailer for the Venom movie, following its premiere inside of Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con. The second teaser trailer was great, but this is even better – and it runs a full 3 minutes. Tom Hardy is journalist Eddie Brock in this anti-hero thriller, directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, 30 Minutes or Less, Gangster Squad). This looks like it might be the movie fans of the dark symbiote have been waiting for. The cast includes Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Riz Ahmed, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Lee, Sailor Larocque, Reid Scott, and a rumored appearance by Tom Holland as Spidey. Okay, this finally looks awesome. Really, really into this – the VFX are looking solid, and it looks extra dark. ›››

  • Nicolas Winding Refn's New Site Showcasing Restored Films Launches

Nicolas Winding Refn's New Site Showcasing Restored Films Launches

    Nicolas Winding Refn

“It comes with a mystery attached.” Infamous Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn has launched a brand new cinema website, open to the public today, called byNWR.com. The new website is essentially a specialized streaming service, available entirely for free, where Refn handpicks and highlights “meticulously restored” films. This has been his own personal hobby already that he has decided to let the public in on. And he insists there’s no catch, or gimmick, or anything else, he just wants to offer up these films and enrich the world of cinema (and the internet) with these rare, long-lost gems. There is a new release every quarter, divided into three monthly chapters. For the first volume, Refn invited acclaimed biographer and journalist Jimmy McDonough to be the initial guest editor for “Regional Renegades” – all three films available now. ›››

  • First Trailer for Wacky Horror Film 'Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich'

First Trailer for Wacky Horror Film 'Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich'

Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich Trailer

“Vile and wicked.” Cinestate has debuted the first official trailer for Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, an updated reboot of the Puppetmaster horror film. The original Puppetmaster was released in 1989, about crazy animated, murderous puppets. This new film features a screenplay written by S. Craig Zahler (director of Bone Tomahawk and Brawl in Cell Block 99), along with some crazy new puppets, including a ringleader known as the “Littlest Reich”. All hell breaks loose when a strange force animates the puppets up for auction at a convention, setting them on a bloody killing spree that’s motivated by an evil as old as time. The film stars Michael Paré, Thomas Lennon, Charlyne Yi, Udo Kier, Nelson Franklin, Matthias Hues, Jenny Pellicer, and Barbara Crampton. This does look totally weird and violent and crazy, so have fun. ›››

  • New US Trailer for Extraordinary Doc 'Makala' About a Charcoal Maker

New US Trailer for Extraordinary Doc 'Makala' About a Charcoal Maker

    Makala Doc Trailer

“Time is going by so fast.” Kino Lorber has debuted an official US trailer for a documentary titled Makala, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year and played at the Toronto & London Film Festivals. I saw this in London and loved it, writing a rave review. It’s still often on my mind and with this new trailer I want to bring some attention to it again. Made by French filmmaker Emmanuel Gras, Makala follows one man from Congo (aka Democratic Republic of the Congo) who makes charcoal on his own then carries it on a bike to a nearby city to sell. As I said in my review: “it is one of the most engaging looks at humanity you can find on screen all year.” Makala is an eye-opening cinematic experience that I highly recommend to all. ›››
