“To the ones forgotten by history by those who shape it.” While there have been many powerful, important war films over the years, including a few directed by women, Girls of the Sun is a very unique and one-of-a-kind film. Made by French filmmaker Eva Husson, Girls of the Sun (or Les filles du soleil in French) tells the story of a band of Kurdish women fighters, warriors, you could even say, participating in the war in Iraq. This is one of the first and only times we’ve ever seen a war film about female fighters, focusing entirely on them and their experiences, and it’s an engaging and intense experience. More than anything it proves that Eva Husson has the chops to direct even bigger, better action movies and/or features that aren’t just simple dramas in a city. And there’s a very honorable, empowering aspect to telling this story about these fighters. ›››

“The soul belongs to heaven and the body to hell.” Get ready… This week at the Cannes Film Festival, controversial Danish director Lars von Trier returns after being banned for 8 years to premiering his latest film, titled The House That Jack Built. The House That Jack Built stars Matt Dillon as the titular Jack, a highly intelligent serial killer. The film follows him for 12 years profiling his murders. Also starring Bruno Ganz, Uma Thurman, Ed Speleers, Siobhan Fallon Hogan, Sofie Gråbøl, Riley Keough, and Yu Ji-tae. The film is described as being about “the idea that life is evil and soulless,” and runs a total of 2 hours, 35 minutes, which means we’re in for something quite special from von Trier. “There’s nothing accidental about any of this.” MarVista Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Year of Spectacular Men, a feature film that marks the directorial debut of actress Lea Thompson (yeah, the one from Back to the Future and Howard the Duck). The film stars Madelyn Deutch as a young woman fresh out of college navigating the failures of post-college adulthood, ruining relationships with various men she meets. Zoey Deutch, who is the sister of Madelyn, co-stars with a cast including Avan Jogia, Nicholas Braun, Melissa Bolona, Jesse Bradford, Lea Thompson, and Brandon T. Jackson. This looks exactly like it sounds, even about a wannabe actress, but with a twist that a woman can’t find the right guy – not that the guy can’t find the ideal woman. It looks cute and funny. ›››

“Une sangria.” The first teaser trailer has debuted for the latest film from controversial filmmaker Gaspar Noé, known for his films I Stand Alone, Irreversible, Enter the Void, and Love previously. His new film is titled Climax, and it just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this weekend to quite a bit of buzz. Despite the sultry title, the film isn’t so much about sex as it is about a group of dancers and a lot of sangria, or something like that. Of course, there is sexuality and all kinds of crazy things going on, because it wouldn’t be a Gaspar Noé without all of that. The initial reviews are considerably positive, praising it as a Gaspar Noé version of Step Up crossed with all kinds of other things. This is a fun first teaser that gives you an idea of some of the craziness that’s in this, and I’m sure there’s plenty more to discover in the full film. Have a look. ›››

The film is about a small group of town residents who have to band together after a devastating ground invasion from alien invaders. As they struggle to survive, they realize they must stay one step ahead of their attackers, and work together for a chance to strike back. The big Aussie cast includes Temuera Morrison, Stephany Jacobsen, Dan Ewing, Rhiannon Fish, Zachary Garred, Izzy Stevens, Charles Terrier, Charles Mesure, Felix Williamson, Jacqueline McKenzie, and Bruce Spence. “So things haven’t spiraled out of control the moment I left?” Disney has debuted another new 60-second “sneak peek” TV trailer for Pixar’s Incredibles 2, and it contains a few more scenes of unseen footage. We keep seeing more and more in extra trailers, and the more footage we see, the more excited I get. I have a good feeling this might just be amazing, and we barely have any real sense of the plot because Pixar usually likes to keep it all a big secret (especially whatever happens in the second half). Craig T. Nelson is back to voice Bob, with Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sarah Vowell. At this point, I’m ready to just watch this movie and find out what is going on here before any more of it is revealed in more TV spots and trailers. “I really don’t care who I was, I’m sorry.” Screen Daily has released the first festival trailer for a surreal Polish film titled Fugue, which is premiering at the Cannes Film Festival this weekend in the Critics’ Week sidebar. Fugue is the latest feature from director Agnieszka Smoczyńska, who last made the cult hit The Lure – a musical about mermaids. The film is about Alicja – a woman who has no memory and no knowledge about how she lost it. When her family finds her, she is forced to fit into the roles of a mother, daughter and wife, surrounded by what seem to be complete strangers. It’s described as a story about a woman who comes to regret motherhood. The cast includes Gabriela Muskała and Łukasz Simlat. I love a good survival film. I don’t really know what it is about them, even though they’re all quite similar, I still enjoy every last one – The Grey, All is Lost, Gravity, Styx, Buried, The Martian, Life of Pi, 127 Hours, The Revenant, Tracks, Cast Away, The Way Back, Kon-Tiki. The latest survival thriller offering which just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival is a film titled Arctic, about a man trying to survive all by himself in the freezing, cold, snowy arctic. Produced in Iceland and filmed in Iceland, the film is the feature directorial debut of Brazilian filmmaker Joe Penna, and features some very real survival tactics. It also has all of the usual survival film tropes: just when you think everything is fine, something else goes wrong. There’s always some animal that makes things worse (in this one, it’s a polar bear). Rescuers never see them when nearby. ›››

“Our hope was always to bring civilization to Congo…” Abramorama has debuted the official trailer for a documentary titled This Is Congo, a film made by war photographer Daniel McCabe. This looks like an incredible inside look at the African country known as the Congo (in full: the Democratic Republic of the Congo). “From embedding on the front lines with the national army, to displacement camps, to the black market for minerals, McCabe had unprecedented access to many sides of a decades long struggle for control over the most mineral-rich country in Africa. To capture the footage, McCabe shot with customized camera rigs and used creative sound recording solutions often acting as a one-man crew.” This will be released in theaters in NY & LA in late June this summer, timed to the 60th Anniversary of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s independence.
