Watch: Touching Animated Short 'Contact' About a Lonely Astronaut

    Contact Short Film

“Who are you? Where are you?” Another lovely short film to watch when you have a free moment. Contact is an animated short made by Katy Wang, who designed, directed, and animated the entire film. Wang just graduated from Kingston University’s School of Art last year, and this is her final graduation project, now available online after playing at numerous festivals in 2017. Contact is about a lonely, stranded astronaut who finally makes contact with another person. It’s yet another touching parable about love and loneliness and connection. I really dig the animation style and the simplicity of the film, one of my favorite discoveries. ›››

Full Trailer for New 4K Re-Release of Dennis Hopper's 'The Last Movie'

    The Last Movie

“It seems to ask: If the movies represent a dream life, then what exactly is the dream?” Arbelos Films has released a new trailer for the re-release of Dennis Hopper’s film The Last Movie, originally released in 1971. The film is getting a gorgeous 4K restoration and will be hitting theaters this month. If you haven’t heard of it before, that’s because the film has mostly been forgotten about, referred to as a “radical, much-mythologized lost masterpiece” that almost ended his career. Dennis Hopper directs and also stars as in the film as a unit wrangler named Kansas, working on a film in Peru, who quits the filmmaking world but is recruited to perform the scenes from the film for real to convince the locals. It touches upon ideas of fiction versus reality, especially in regards to cinema. Film critic Bilge Ebiri recently wrote this glowing tribute for Village Voice, imploring: “Go see The Last Movie. Then go see it again. And again.” Now is your best chance. ›››

  • Trailer for Indie Musical 'The Song of Sway Lake' Starring Rory Culkin

Trailer for Indie Musical 'The Song of Sway Lake' Starring Rory Culkin

The Song of Sway Lake Trailer

“I gave you a home, I didn’t give you my name!” The Orchard has debuted a new official trailer for an indie film titled The Song of Sway Lake, a funky musical fable of sorts about a boy who tries to steal a rare vinyl record from his own family’s estate. Rory Culkin stars in this as Ollie, and the cast includes Robert Sheehan, Isabelle McNally, Mary Beth Peil, Elizabeth Peña, Jack Falahee, Brian Dennehy, and Anna Shields. This is actually, strangely enough, supposedly a musical featuring vocal performances by Brian Dennehy, John Grant, and The Staves. This looks wacky and weird and a bit too strange to actually be any good, but you never know. If you think any of this sounds compelling, then check out the trailer below. ›››

  • Kristen Stewart & Chloë Sevigny in First Trailer for Indie Drama 'Lizzie'

Kristen Stewart & Chloë Sevigny in First Trailer for Indie Drama 'Lizzie'

    Lizzie Trailer

“Takes a legend and blows it up from the inside.” Roadside Attractions has debuted the first official trailer for an indie drama titled Lizzie, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The dramatic thriller tells the story of Lizzie Borden, infamous for murdering her parents with an axe in 1892. Chloë Sevigny stars as Lizzie Borden, and the cast includes Kristen Stewart as her lover, Bridget, as well as Kim Dickens, Fiona Shaw, Denis O’Hare, Jeff Perry, Jamey Sheridan, Jay Huguley, and Tara Ochs. This didn’t have the best reviews out of Sundance, but it does look like a fascinating film with some stunning performances. Director Craig William Macneill “explores the days leading up to the savage crimes in a dark tale of repression, exploitation and thwarted dreams.” If you’re curious about this, give it a watch. ›››

Watch: Fantastic Samurai Zombie B&W Short Film 'Sword of the Dead'

Sword of the Dead Short Film

“Weary eyes have witnessed their final blossom. All that is left are withered fields, everlasting the shadow of death…” This short film is pure horror bliss. Sword of the Dead is a short made by filmmaker Stephen Vitale, a B&W action horror about a samurai who arrives on the shores of Matsuoka Island in 1644. There he discovers an island overrun with zombies. Starring Masami Kosaka, with Rome Kanda. I don’t think we’ve seen samurais and zombies mashed together (have we?), but this is so awesome. I love the crisp, clean B&W and the performances from the lead is excellent. I definitely want to see more, what an opening scene. ›››

  • Final Trailer for WB's Animated Movie 'Smallfoot' About a Friendly Yeti

Final Trailer for WB's Animated Movie 'Smallfoot' About a Friendly Yeti

    Smallfoot Trailer

“We’re going to be safe here, nice and warm.” Warner Bros has debuted one final, official trailer for their animated movie Smallfoot, arriving in theaters this fall. The story follows a “bright, young” Yeti whose life changes when he discovers something that shouldn’t exist—a human. This discovery throws the simple Yeti community into an uproar over what else might be out there in the big world beyond their own snowy village, in a story about friendship, courage and the joy of discovery. Channing Tatum stars as the voice of Migo; the cast includes Zendaya, Gina Rodriguez, Danny DeVito, Yara Shahidi, Jimmy Tatro, Ely Henry, and LeBron James. This seems like a fun movie, but the story looks similar to every other story about overcoming differences & learning to be friends (e.g. How to Train Your Dragon). Still might be good. ›››

Sanaa Lathan in First Trailer for Self-Love Drama 'Nappily Ever After'

    Nappily Ever After Trailer

“I’ve worked so hard to be perfect, and it still wasn’t enough.” Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for an indie romantic drama titled Nappily Ever After, the latest film from director Haifaa Al-Mansour (of Wadjda, who also made the film Mary Shelley released earlier this year). Nappily Ever After, adapted from a book, is about a woman who breaks up with her boyfriend after years of waiting for him to propose. “But old feelings, and heaps of jealousy, no doubt, arise when he promptly begins dating another woman.” Sanaa Lathan stars as Violet Jones, and also produced the film. The cast also includes Ricky Whittle, Lyriq Bent, Ernie Hudson, Catherine Dyer, and Lynn Whitfield. The film seems to be all about her becoming a new person after moving on from her hair obsession, and I think it’s actually an interesting story. ›››

Based on James Baldwin’s 1974 novel of the same name, If Beale Street Could Talk is about a woman in Harlem desperately trying to prove her fiancé innocent of a crime while she is carrying their first child. Full UK Trailer for Retired Crooks Heist Comedy 'The King of Thieves'

    The King of Thieves Trailer

“The problem with gold: it’s easy to get, but it’s difficult to get rid of.” Studiocanal UK has debuted the full-length official trailer for heist comedy The King of Thieves, the latest film from British filmmaker James Marsh (The Theory of Everything, Man on Wire, Project Nim). The film tells the “incredible true story” of the Hatton Garden diamond robbery in London, which took place in April of 2015. A group of retired thieves decide to pull off one of the biggest heists ever in London robbing safe deposit boxes – and they got away with roughly £200 million, but were eventually caught. Michael Caine leads the excellent cast, with Jim Broadbent, Tom Courtenay, Charlie Cox, Michael Gambon, and Ray Winstone. This looks like so much fun, more about the performances and kooky crook characters than anything, but I’m totally up for it. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Young Scientists Documentary 'Inventing Tomorrow'

Official Trailer for Young Scientists Documentary 'Inventing Tomorrow'

    Inventing Tomorrow Trailer

“I want to represent my country, but with science.” An official trailer has finally debuted for the inspiring documentary titled Inventing Tomorrow, made by producer / filmmaker Laura Nix (The Light in Her Eyes, The Yes Men Are Revolting). Inventing Tomorrow initially premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, along with the other science fair documentary titled simply just Science Fair (watch that trailer). Both films follow students who end up at the same science fair – the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (or ISEF). This one focuses on following a few of the inspiring teens as they prepare their projects, taking us to their homes around the world as they attempt to solve great dilemmas in their country. This looks a bit kitschy and hammy, but it seems very fun and friendly and good for kids of all ages to enjoy. ›››
