Mia Rose Frampton in Trailer for Teen Drama 'Hope Springs Eternal'

    Hope Springs Eternal Trailer

“Who cares if you’re sorry, you have to do something about it.” Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted the official trailer for a dramatic comedy for teens titled Hope Springs Eternal, from a screenplay written by Stephanie Mickus. The film hasn’t premiered at any major festivals before as far as we know, but it will be hitting theaters next month for those who might be interested. Hope Springs Eternal is about a “girl dying of cancer” who maintains this identity to get her the life she wants, until one day she learns she’s cured but doesn’t know how to admit the truth to everyone and move on. Young actress Mia Rose Frampton (Peter Frampton’s daughter, who was featured Bridesmaids) stars, with Stony Blyden, Juliette Angelo, Beau Brooks, Beth Lacke, and Pej Vahdat. This PG-rated film has all the usual cliche high school moments. ›››

KVIFF 2018: 'The Fireflies Are Gone' is Fresh Coming-of-Age Cinema

    The Fireflies Are Gone

Every year we get a big batch of new coming-of-age films, but only a few of them really stand out. This is one of the very best of the coming-of-age films from 2018, a lovely dramatic feature Quebec. The Fireflies Are Gone, originally titled La disparition des lucioles in French, is the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Sébastien Pilote and it’s wonderful. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel or anything, but it is a very fresh, funny, heartwarming take on today’s youth growing up without a desire to conform to their parents’ desires for a perfect career-focused life. This is one of those particularly outstanding indie films that is so enjoyable and exciting that it put a spring in my step. The moment it finishes up, I was grinning ear-to-ear and suddenly happy about the world and just wanted to get out and dance. I really love when films have this kind of effect. ›››

First Trailer for Studio Ponoc's 'Modest Heroes' Short Film Anthology

    Modest Heroes Trailer

“You’ll be carried away by these modest heroes.” Oh my goodness!! Studio Ponoc, the animation studio in Japan that is essentially the spiritual successor to Studio Ghibli, has released the first official trailer for an animated anthology of short films. These short films will be released in Japan this August, their next offering since making Mary and the Witch’s Flower (which just opened in the US earlier this year and is available now on iTunes). This new series is titled “Ponoc Short Films Theatre”, and this first set of three shorts is titled Modest Heroes. Ponoc recruited three of Ghibli’s finest veteran animators to make these three short films – Kanini & Kanino directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, Life Ain’t Gonna Lose (aka Samurai Egg) directed by Yoshiyuki Momose, and Invisible directed by Akihiko Yamashita. In addition, Japan’s Kaela Kimura performs the Modest Heroes theme song, which plays at the end of the anthology feature. Ahhh! This looks amazing, I love everything about it, and I can’t wait to see these shorts for myself. ›››

Stunning Trailer for Alison McAlpine's Beautiful Night Sky Doc 'Cielo'

    Cielo Trailer

“Now I can’t stop watching you. I’m trying to understand your crazy beauty.” If you love the stars and the night sky as much as I do, then you do not want to miss this documentary. Cielo (which means Heaven in Spanish) is a feature documentary made by filmmaker Alison McAlpine. She fell in love with the night sky when she experienced a blackout in the Atacama Desert in Chile. So she decided to make this documentary about the Atacama Desert, “one of the best places on our planet to explore and contemplate its splendour.” There are a number of observatories and telescopes there, but the film spends most of its time with the Chilean locals, discussing the night sky and its wonder. It’s a gorgeous doc filled with spectacular imagery of the stars. “A love poem for the night sky, Cielo transports us to a space, quiet and calm, within which we can ponder the infinite and unknown.” The film will open in US theaters in August, for those who want to watch. ›››

Trailer for Hawaii-Set Love Story 'Running for Grace' with Ryan Potter

    Running for Grace Trailer

“I saw the way you were looking at her…” Blue Fox Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for the indie romantic drama Running for Grace, the latest film from David L. Cunningham (Beyond Paradise, To End All Wars, After). Set on Hawaii in the 1920s, the film tells the story of a young mixed-race boy “who transcends the boundaries of race and class in pursuit of a forbidden love”. It’s a “timeless tale that takes place against the backdrop of the segregated coffee fields in 1920’s Hawaii”. The film has previously gone under the title Jo, the Medicine Runner but is now being released as Running for Grace. Ryan Potter stars as Jo, and Olivia Ritchie plays his love interest Grace; the rest of the cast includes Matt Dillon, Jim Caviezel, Juliet Mills, and Nick Boraine. This looks charming, but not particularly good unfortunately. ›››

  • First Teaser Trailer for Korean Political Thriller 'The Spy Gone North'

First Teaser Trailer for Korean Political Thriller 'The Spy Gone North'

    The Spy Gone North Trailer

“The Party won’t be so easily convinced.” CJ Entertainment has debuted the first international teaser trailer for a political thriller titled The Spy Gone North, which first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Midnight section earlier this summer. The latest from Korean filmmaker Yoon Jong-bin (The Unforgiven, Kundo: Age of the Rampant), the intense double agent film follows a South Korean spy who infiltrates the North to obtain intelligence on the country’s nuclear weapons plans in the mid-1990s. This stars Hwang Jung-min, Lee Sung-min, Cho Jin-woong, and Ju Ji-hoon. This looks damn good, even if it is just another typical double agent thriller, there’s some cool set pieces. The scene where the troops step back and the guy puts his hand up is chilling, I really want to see how that plays out from there. Get a first look below. ›››

  • Review: Marvel's 'Ant-Man and the Wasp' is Big Fun in a Small Package

Review: Marvel's 'Ant-Man and the Wasp' is Big Fun in a Small Package

    Ant-Man and the Wasp

Marvel Comics first introduced the character of Ant-Man in 1962 with the publication of Tales to Astonish #27. The insect-controlling, half-inch hero later appeared in Avengers #1 alongside his partner-in-crime, the Wasp, as founding members of the team. It wasn’t until 2015, however, that the iconic duo made their big screen debut in director Peyton Reed’s heist comedy, Ant-Man. Well, sort of. In the movie, the original Ant-Man, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), resurrects the hero and handpicks good-natured thief Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) to don the suit. Pym’s daughter, Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) is set to become the Wasp by the movie’s end, but we never actually see her in action. Enter Ant-Man and the Wasp, the twentieth installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), once again directed by Peyton Reed. ›››

KVIFF 2018: Skateboarding vs Communism in Superb 'King Skate' Doc

    King Skate Documentary Review

“Stick close to the concrete. Jam through the space. Keep it moving.” Skateboarding is not just a sport, its a means of expression, a way to liberate yourself and be truly free. To ride where you’re not supposed to ride, to act the way you want to act, without anyone telling you how to be or what to do. There have been many skateboarding documentaries over the years previously, but this new one is a superb look at the early days of skateboarding in the country formerly known as Czechoslovakia. King Skate is a Czech documentary made by Simon Safránek, his first feature film, and it’s packed with a mesmerizing selection of archival footage looking back at how skating became immensely popular in the 1970s & 1980s in this closed-off country. As expected, there’s a rad punk soundtrack to compliment all the footage making it an intoxicating experience. ›››

I Adore This Film! Fun Trailer for Animated 'Big Bad Fox & Other Tales'

Big Bad Fox & Other Tales Trailer

GKids has announced they will be releasing an English-language version of this fantastic French-Belgian animated film later this year. Big Bad Fox & Other Tales is a film made up of three fun stories, originally created as holiday specials for TV. The adorable tales all star a cute little fox named Fox, who gets into all kinds of trouble at a farm. “The countryside isn’t always as calm and peaceful as it’s made out to be, and the animals on this farm are particularly agitated: a fox who mothers a family of chicks, a rabbit who plays the stork, and a duck who wants to be Santa Claus.” The English voice cast includes Giles New as Fox, Bill Bailey, Adrian Edmondson, Justin Edwards, Matthew Goode, Celia Imrie, and Phill Jupitus. I saw this at a festival last year and I ADORE this film, it’s so wonderful and delightful and hilarious and good for all-ages entertainment. It’s the perfect little animated comedy to share with your entire family during the holidays. Below you’ll find the original French trailer with subtitles, until the new US trailer arrives. Enjoy. ›››

  • Final US Trailer for Xavier Gens' Antarctic Creature Feature 'Cold Skin'

Final US Trailer for Xavier Gens' Antarctic Creature Feature 'Cold Skin'

    Cold Skin Trailer

“We are the invaders… which makes us the enemy.” Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted another official US trailer for the film Cold Skin, a creature feature set in the Arctic, which has been delayed and buried after opening in Spain a few years ago. This is the latest film by French filmmaker Xavier Gens (of Frontier(s) and The Divide) and it already opened in Europe last year, but has been waiting for a US release ever since. Most likely because it just looks so weird. Set on a desolate island in the Antarctic Circle, the film tells of a man living down there as a weather observer who discovers that at night the island is overrun by mysterious creatures. He falls in love with one of them, which complicates things even further. The cast includes David Oakes, Ray Stevenson, and Aura Garrido as Aneris, who plays the creature who gets close to the main character. This film finally opens in the US in September, if you’re still curious to see what’s really going on. ›››
