    “What are the chances you’re not coming back?” Universal has just launched the second official trialer for Damien Chazelle’s highly anticipated new film, titled First Man, an intimate look at the life of astronaut Neil Armstrong leading up to his voyage on Apollo 11 and his first steps on the Moon in July of 1969. This follows the exclusive IMAX preview shown in theaters in front of Mission: Impossible this weekend. Ryan Gosling (from Chazelle’s La La Land) stars as Armstrong, and the full cast includes Claire Foy as his wife Janet, with Pablo Schreiber, Kyle Chandler, Ciarán Hinds, Ethan Embry, Jason Clarke, Brian d’Arcy James, Corey Stoll, Christopher Abbott, Patrick Fugit, Shea Whigham, and Lukas Haas. The film features sequences shot on IMAX cameras, as well as scenes shot on film, mixing different camera styles.     “We don’t talk about the movie!” Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for The Other Side of the Wind, the first new film from iconic filmmaker Orson Welles in 46 years. So the story goes that Welles filmed part of this back in the 1970s, but never finished and the film was scrapped. However, they found the original footage and original script and worked to complete and now it’s ready to be seen. The film tells the story of a legendary director named J.J. “Jake” Hannaford, played by iconic filmmaker John Huston, who returns to Hollywood from years of semi-exile in Europe, with plans to complete work on his own innovative comeback movie, also titled The Other Side of the Wind. The full cast includes Robert Random, Peter Bogdanovich, Susan Strasberg, Oja Kodar, and Lilli Palmer. This is the world’s very first look at any footage before the film premieres at the Venice & New York Film Festivals. And it looks a bit eclectic & wild. ›››

    “Can’t just send these kids up there to get shot down.” United Entertainment + Lionsgate have debuted a full-length official trailer for the film Air Strike, a Chinese production about WWII, which has gone under different titles including The Bombing and Unbreakable Spirit. The film is about five Chinese people who fight their way through intense Japanese Air Force attacks to protect an important military machine in Chongqing. In addition to the Chinese cast, the film also stars Bruce Willis and Adrien Brody, who are being put front and center for the US release. The cast also includes Ye Liu, Song Seung-heon, William Wai-Ting Chan, Nicholas Tse, Janine Chun-Ning Chang, Fan Wei, and Fan Bingbing. This film features seriously epic CGI sequences of WWII bombings and air attacks, along with all the impassioned performances from the cast. It looks fairly entertaining, but also looks extremely cheesy and very jingoistic. ›››

    “Great warriors pray for a life of violence…” Gravitas Ventures has debuted the official trailer for an indie titled Bayou Caviar, the feature directorial debut of Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. Described as a “movie about money, sex, power, corruption – and somebody getting fed to alligators,” this went under a few alternate working titles – Burbank Caviar and Louisiana Caviar – before ending up with Bayou Caviar officially. The plot involves a former boxing champ who decides to try to bring down an empire by setting up a sex tape scandal involving a real estate mogul. Cuba Gooding Jr. also stars in this, along with Famke Janssen, Richard Dreyfuss, Lia Marie Johnson, Katharine McPhee, Gregg Bello, Sam Thakur, and James Moses Black. This looks cool, but I’m notthat sure it’s actually any good. Still worth a watch. ›››

    “A twenty-first century portrait.” Vanity Fair has released the first brief teaser trailer for a new film titled Vox Lux, the second feature made by actor Brady Corbet (who also directed The Childhood of a Leader). This is premiering at the Venice Film Festival starting this week, and it will also play at the Toronto Film Festival. Not much is known about this yet, but it stars Natalie Portman as a mega-famous popstar named Celeste. The short description explains that “an unusual set of circumstances brings unexpected success to a pop star.” And supposedly the film spans 18 years, showing many major moments through her eyes. The cast includes Jude Law, Jennifer Ehle, Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin, Matt Servitto, Fred Hechinger, and Allison Winn. There is not much to this teaser, just her walking out on stage, but I am curious to see more – I’ve got a good feeling. And I’m looking forward to catching the film in Venice. This kicks off the annual “fall movie season”, beginning with three major festivals back-to-back: the Venice Film Festival (in its 75th year), the Telluride Film Festival (in its 45th year), and the Toronto Film Festival (in its 43rd year). For cinephiles and Oscar pundits, this is always the most exciting time of the year. The best films are usually waiting to premiere, or be discovered in the mix of all the madness, and it’s finally time to get into them. Rowan Atkinson (who also plays Mr. Bean) is back again as Johnny English, the “man with few skills” and wacky, loser spy who helps save Britain, again. This time, a cyber-attack (yes, indeed) reveals the identity of all active undercover agents in Britain, and English (of course) is the only one who can help them get everything back in order. The cast in this includes Emma Thompson, Olga Kurylenko, Ben Miller, Jake Lacy, Adam James, and Miranda Hennessy. I really don’t know why they made this – it doesn’t seem like the right time or place for another spy spoof movie. The best part about this trailer is watching Emma Thompson tear him a new one, but that’s about it. More of that, please. ›››

The first teaser trailer showed some promise, but this new trailer really lets loose and it looks freaky as all hell. “A terrifying thrill ride from iconic horror producer Gale Anne Hurd and director Gregory Plotkin (Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension), this September audiences will discover that it’s fun going in… but it’s hell getting out.” Hell Fest stars Amy Forsyth, Reign Edwards, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Christian James, Roby Attal, and Matt Mercurio. This actually looks super creepy and violent and insane, they’re seriously showing off all the gore and wow. That final shot – damn. Hard to even watch! Be careful out there. ›››

This premiered at the SXSW Film Festival and a number of other film festivals this year, so it definitely has some clout and acclaim. 1985 stars Cory Michael Smith (from Wonderstruck, “Gotham”) as a closeted young man living in New York City in 1985, who heads home to his Texas hometown for Christmas during the first wave of the AIDS crisis. There he reconnects with his brother and friend, and attempts to have a real conversation with his religious parents. Starring Virginia Madsen & Michael Chiklis as his parents, along with Jamie Chung, Aidan Langford, and Bryan Massey. This was shot in high-contrast black-and-white on 16mm, which connects it even more with the setting and adds another layer of dramatic tension to the storytelling. Check this out. ›››
