Venice 2018: Parables to Contemplate in 'The Ballad of Buster Scruggs'

    The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Gather ’round everyone, take a seat by the fire, for Joel & Ethan Coen have some fun new tales to tell. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is a six-part Western anthology film, the latest feature from the Coen Brothers. They’ve made Westerns before (most notably True Grit in 2010) but this is something else entirely – six different stories, each with their own unique characters, and locations, and ideas to consider. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is as intelligent, contemplative, comedic, and as beautiful as everything from the Coens, but it goes beyond that. These six stories are actually parables about humanity and the way people cheat, lie, deceive each other, and the way men are greedy, confused, ambitious, unsure, and careless. And they’re all gorgeously filmed, captivating to watch, which is no surprise considering the Coens are filmmaking masters. ›››

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Trailer

“I have some questions for you, Dumbledore…” Warner Bros has debuted a behind-the-scenes featurette for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, taking us “Back to Hogwarts” to remind us how this series is connected to Harry Potter. The latest extended trailer premiered at Comic-Con and actually had some exciting footage in it. This sequel is once again directed by David Yates, the next chapter in the newest J.K. Rowling spin-off series. Eddie Redmayne returns as magizoologist Newt Scamander, and the movie’s cast includes Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Carmen Ejogo, Zoe Kravitz, Ezra Miller, Alison Sudol, Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald, Jessica Williams, Claudia Kim, and Callum Turner, plus Jude Law as a young Dumbledore. There’s not much to this featurette, but it’s at least something new to enjoy as we wait for another final trailer before this movie hits theaters in November. Take a look below. ›››

  • First Teaser for 'What You Gonna Do When the World's on Fire?' Doc

First Teaser for 'What You Gonna Do When the World's on Fire?' Doc

What You Gonna Do When the World's on Fire? Teaser Trailer

“We’ve been set free but we’re still slaves, goddamnit.” The Match Factory has just debuted the first teaser trailer for a new documentary titled What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire?, ahead of its premiere at the Venice Film Festival this weekend. It’s playing at Venice because it’s directed by an Italian filmmaker, Roberto Minervini, even though it’s all about what’s happening in America. What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire? is the story of a community of black people in the American South during the summer of 2017, when a string of brutal killings of black men sent shockwaves throughout the country. A meditation on the state of race in America, this doc film is an intimate portrait into the lives of those who struggle for justice, dignity, and survival in a country not on their side. This teaser doesn’t show much, but it’s more than enough to get my attention. Looking forward to catching this in Venice at its world premiere. ›››

  • Venice 2018: Yorgos Lanthimos' 'The Favourite' is Delightful Decadence

Venice 2018: Yorgos Lanthimos' 'The Favourite' is Delightful Decadence

    The Favourite

There’s nothing like a Yorgos Lanthimos film. The more films he makes, the more refined and interesting and bold he gets. The Favourite is Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest work, an English-language feature set in early 18th century England, following a capricious Queen and her wacky days in her castle. It’s the pinnacle of amusing absurdity, giving us even more ridiculousness (this time going back into the past) to chew on and laugh at with utter joy. This extensive, opulent, hilarious comedy is about a Queen being played by her subjects, specifically two women who work closely with her. It is delightful decadence, with so much crazy, bizarre, funny moments throughout – though it overstays its welcome. Unlike Lanthimos’ past films, this one isn’t that meaningful, it’s all made to be enjoyed as something absurdly fun and entirely harmless. ›››

  • New Trailer for Baltimore Streets Doc 'Charm City' from Marilyn Ness

New Trailer for Baltimore Streets Doc 'Charm City' from Marilyn Ness

    Charm City Trailer

“Can’t get tired… Can’t give up… Things are going to get better.” PBS Distribution has debuted the trailer for a documentary film titled Charm City, which premiered at Tribeca and AFI Docs this year. The film is about the city of Baltimore, Maryland (with a population of 614,000), which has become a key location for civil uprising in the last few years. During three years of unparalleled violence in Baltimore, Charm City delivers an unexpectedly candid, observational portrait of those left on the frontlines. With grit, fury, and compassion, a group of police, citizens, and government officials grapple with the consequences of violence and try to reclaim their future. With all that is happening in America, these documentaries that show us the people involved, and the people fighting to make a difference, are becoming more and more important – not only to look back at the past, but also to keep pushing us forward. This one looks like it is worth your time. ›››

    The Front Runner Trailer

“You can’t hide from this.” Sony Pictures has debuted the first official trailer for Jason Reitman’s next film The Front Runner, the second film from Reitman being released this year, along with Tully earlier in the summer. The Front Runner is premiering at the Telluride & Toronto Film Festivals coming up soon, which is why this trailer has dropped just in time. Based on a true story, Hugh Jackman stars as the charismatic politician Gary Hart, who was going to be President. Instead, he changed American Politics forever. Oh boy, get ready for this. His campaign in 1988 is derailed when he’s caught in a scandalous love affair which then becomes headline news. Also starring Vera Farmiga, J.K. Simmons, Sara Paxton, Kaitlyn Dever, Molly Ephraim, Courtney Ford, Ari Graynor, Kevin Pollak, and Alfred Molina. As a big fan of Reitman, I’m very much looking forward to seeing this. • Stefanie Scott in First Trailer for Superpowers Thriller 'At First Light'

Stefanie Scott in First Trailer for Superpowers Thriller 'At First Light'

    At First Light Trailer

“She’s different from the others.” Gravitas has debuted an official trailer for an intriguing indie sci-fi film titled At First Light, originally just First Light. The film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, the second feature made by filmmaker Jason Stone. At First Light is about a young woman named Alex Lainey, played by newcomer Stefanie Scott, who has a close encounter with mysterious orbs of light that leave her with extraordinary powers. As they flee from their families, the police, and a government agency, Alex and her friend Sean find themselves at the center of an unprecedented event in human history. The cast includes Théodore Pellerin, Kristin Booth, Kate Burton, and Josh Cruddas. This actually looks pretty damn cool. Even though we’ve seen plenty of superpowers movies recently, I’m a bit more curious about this one. ›››

Full Trailer for Reed Morano's Superb Sci-Fi 'I Think We're Alone Now'

I Think We're Alone Now Trailer

“There’s no before. There’s only from now on…” Momentum Pictures has finally debuted the full trailer for the indie post-apocalyptic sci-fi film I Think We’re Alone Now, the second film made by the talented cinematographer Reed Morano (Meadowland, “The Handmaid’s Tale”). This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and we’ve been posting the short teaser trailers. The film plays like a “Black Mirror” episode, about a guy who is the lone survivor of an apocalypse. Peter Dinklage stars as Del, who works hard to keep his little town maintained in a world where he’s the only one left alive. Until someone else suddenly shows us. The surprise cast also includes Elle Fanning, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Paul Giamatti. I love this little sci-fi film and reviewed it at Sundance. This trailer hints at quite a bit of what’s going on, but doesn’t give away everything thankfully. Hopefully this indie sci-fi film finds a good audience. ›››
