Second Trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos' Absurd Comedy 'The Favourite'

    The Favourite Trailer

“I hope I might be employed here… by you… for something…” Fox Searchlight has debuted a new full-length trailer for the new film from iconic Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth, Alps, The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer) titled The Favourite. This just premiered at the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals to rave reviews from all kinds of critics. Set in early 18th century England, the film’s plot involves the frail Queen Anne, played by Olivia Colman, occupying the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah, played by Rachel Weisz (from The Lobster), governing the country in her stead. However, when the new servant Abigail, played by Emma Stone, arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Also starring Nicholas Hoult, Joe Alwyn, Mark Gatiss, Jenny Rainsford, and James Smith. I saw this in Venice and loved it, writing a glowing review about how the film is “hilarious and delightful.” One of the best absurd comedies of the year. And this trailer also includes some the really wonderfully weird score for the film. Watch below. ›››

First Trailer for Paul Greengrass' Utøya Island Shooting Film '22 July'

    22 July Trailer

“The true story of a day that started like any other.” Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for a film titled 22 July, the latest feature by action director Paul Greengrass. The film is premiering tomorrow at the Venice Film Festival before playing at TIFF, which is why this trailer is out now. 22 July tells the true story of the aftermath of Norway’s deadliest terrorist attack. On 22 July 2011, 77 people were killed when a far-right extremist detonated a car bomb in Oslo before carrying out a mass shooting at a leadership camp for teens. 22 July uses the lens of one survivor’s physical and emotional journey to portray the country’s path to healing and reconciliation. Earlier this year, another controversial, eye-opening film about the exact same incident – titled Utøya 22 July – played at the Berlin Film Festival to positive reviews. This one looks a bit different, but still incredibly intense and harrowing and very horrifying to watch. Have a first look below. ›››

    The Whiskey Bandit Trailer

“You know how dangerous this is?” Signature Entertainment has debuted an official UK trailer for an indie crime thriller titled The Whiskey Bandit (or also The Whiskey Robber), based on astonishing true events of Attila Ambrus, the “most infamous bank robber in Hungary.” Originally titled A Viszkis in Hungarian, the film is about a slick bank robber dubbed “The Whiskey Robber” who would drink whiskey before every robbing, notorious during the 1990s for committing a string of undercover “gentleman robberies” in and around Budapest, Hungary, while working a day job as a goaltender for a hockey team. Bence Szalay stars as Attila, and the cast includes Zoltán Schneider, Viktor Klem, Piroska Móga, and György Gazsó. This looks intense and fun to watch, what a crazy story, reminds me a bit of The Wolf of Wall Street. Enjoy. ›››

In short: Is love a relative matter?” Starring Carlos Reygadas himself, plus Natalia López, Eleazar Reygadas, Rut Reygadas, and Phil Burgers. Official Trailer for 'The Ghost of Peter Sellers' About His Pirate Movie

The Ghost of Peter Sellers Trailer

“What kind of person would fake a heart attack?” An official trailer has debuted for a documentary titled The Ghost of Peter Sellers, which is playing at film festivals this fall without a release date yet. The film tells the story of how famed actor Peter Sellers started to work an epic 17th Century pirate movie near Cyprus, called Ghost in the Noonday Sun, which became a disaster while filming and was never released in theaters. Structured around the original director Peter Medak and his journey back to the island 42 years later, the film is about how it all went wrong and what happened, and the story of how Peter Sellers helped turn it into a shipwreck. After troubles while filming, Medak later described the film as “the biggest disaster of my life.” This film seems to be his attempt to wash himself clean and examine in closer detail exactly what went wrong. Another fascinating documentary for cinephiles to dive into and explore in-depth. Check it out. ›››

  • Venice 2018: Bradley Cooper's 'A Star is Born' is Cheesy Yet Lovable

Venice 2018: Bradley Cooper's 'A Star is Born' is Cheesy Yet Lovable

    A Star is Born Review

Sometimes a little cheesiness is just what we need. A Star is Born is the third remake of the classic 1937 film directed by William A. Wellman. This new version is another contemporary update, focusing the story on two musicians who fall in love. Bradley Cooper makes his directorial debut and stars in A Star is Born as alcoholic musician Jackson Maine. He randomly meets and falls for a young woman named Ally, played by real-life popstar Lady Gaga, originally known as Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. This movie is so incredibly cheesy, and cliche, and surface level in every way, yet it’s also so enjoyable, and so catchy, and so charming. The singing makes it all worth it, even though the rest of it is only okay. But audiences are going to fall head over heels for this epic love story, no doubt, because sometimes a little cheesiness isn’t so bad. ›››

First Trailer for 'Hale County This Morning, This Evening' Documentary

Hale County This Morning, This Evening Trailer

“A quietly radical challenge to assumptions about race, class, and the aesthetics of filmmaking.” Cinema Guild has debuted the full trailer for a documentary titled Hale County This Morning, This Evening, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year. The film won a Special Jury Prize for “Creative Vision” at Sundance, before going on to play at True/False, Full Frame, San Francisco, Sarasota, Montclair, and the Sheffield Doc/Fest. Composed of intimate and unencumbered moments of people in a community, this film is constructed in a form that allows the viewer an emotive impression of the “Historic South” – trumpeting the beauty of life and consequences of the social construction of race, while simultaneously a testament to dreaming. It focuses on a few young African American men from rural Hale County, Alabama. This looks extraordinary, and I’ve been hearing great things about it ever since Sundance. Must watch doc. ›››

  • Venice 2018: Luca Guadagnino's 'Suspiria' is a Bewitching Blood Bath

Venice 2018: Luca Guadagnino's 'Suspiria' is a Bewitching Blood Bath

    Suspiria Review

“Tremble tremble!!! The witches are back…” Dario Argento’s original Suspiria from 1977 is a horror classic, perfectly packaged and stylish and one-of-a-kind in every way. Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, Call Me By Your Name) has created a brand new Suspiria, a layered, immensely complex, intense story of witches in Berlin seeking more to join their coven. And it’s also stylish and one-of-a-kind in every way. His film may be a remake, but it’s much different, and it’s an extraordinary work of art – not just cinema, but truly a piece of art. Something that should be hung on the walls in one of the world’s best museums and admired for decades to come. This film is going to seriously fuck up some viewers for life, with so much haunting nuance and intricacy and creepiness that it will be hard to ever forget what it shows. ›››

Amandla Stenberg in Trailer for Amma Asante's 'Where Hands Touch'

    Where Hands Touch Trailer

“I want her to be like everyone else.” Vertical Entertainment has debuted the first official trailer for an indie drama titled Where Hands Touch, premiering at the Toronto Film Festival coming up. This is the latest film by filmmaker Amma Asante (Belle, A United Kingdom) and it’s about a young mixed-race girl living in Nazi Germany in the 1940s. Inspired by a real photo of an African-German woman during WWII, the film stars Amandla Stenberg as Leyna, a courageous teen who must figure out how to survive when the Nazis start eradicating anyone that didn’t fit into their perfect Aryan society. The cast includes George MacKay, Abbie Cornish, Christopher Eccleston, Tom Goodman-Hill, Alec Newman, Olivia Vinall, and Will Attenborough. This looks very good, not a story I have heard of before, but I’m very much interested in seeing this now. Stenberg keeps appearing in more and more and she’s always impressive. Check this out. ›››
