“We ended up giving it just what it wanted…” Warner Bros has debuted one more super scary trailer for the horror prequel now called Annabelle: Creation, the next in the Annabelle series, which itself is a spin-off from The Conjuring horror movies. This was originally titled just Annabelle 2 when the first teaser trailer debuted last year. This one is about a dollmaker and his wife who welcome a nun and several girls from an orphanage into their home, where the cursed Annabelle doll lurks. Starring Talitha Bateman, Stephanie Sigman, Miranda Otto, Anthony LaPaglia, Lulu Wilson, Philippa Coulthard, Grace Fulton and Alicia Vela-Bailey as the Evil Mrs. Mullins. This looks crazy scary. “That’s her – the other woman.” Amazon + Roadside have unveiled the first official trailer for The Only Living Boy in New York, the second film from director Marc Webb being released this year (his other one is Gifted starring Chris Evans). The Only Living Boy in New York is about a recent college grad, played by Callum Turner (also seen in Victor Frankenstein, Assassin’s Creed), whose big city life is thrown into disarray when he discovers his father has a mistress. This also stars Kate Beckinsale, Pierce Brosnan, Kiersey Clemons, Cynthia Nixon, and Jeff Bridges. This looks solid, a bit funky, with a mix of tones that may or may not work. I like Jeff Bridges as the older guy dispensing wisdom, I’ll be hoping for the best. ›››

Taking a step forward, even if it’s a tiny one.” Cohen Media Group has released an official US trailer for Bertrand Tavernier’s cinematic look back titled My Journey Through French Cinema (or Voyage à travers le cinéma français). The documentary is an examination of Tavernier’s love of and experience with French cinema, from the films he enjoyed as a boy to his own early career, told through portraits of key creative figures. This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year in the Cannes Classics section, and looks like a lovely and exhilarating look at so much thrilling cinema from France over the years. Described as a “magnificent, epic documentary… a lifetime in the making,” Tavernier looks back at films from Renoir, Godard, and Melville, along with fascinating discussing about cinema past & present. ›››

“Avatar makes everything possible. There’s no limit anymore…” Europacorp has debuted a fantastic new featurette for Luc Besson’s Valerian, his epic sci-fi adventure hitting theaters next month. This extended featurette is an impressive recap/introduction, looking back to the original graphic novel that this is based on, showing behind-the-scenes of development and production, and ending with finished footage from the film. The space opera sci-fi movie stars Dane DeHaan as Valerian, and Cara Delevingne as Laureline, special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. They must travel to an intergalactic city full of different species called Alpha on a mission. I’m so excited to see this! Time for something uniquely scary. A very suspenseful horror short film titled Curve has debuted online, from writer/director Tim Egan. The short originally premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and won Best Short at Sitges last year, so it already has quite a bit of good buzz. Curve is a very simple concept horror short film about a woman who wakes up clinging to a “smooth, curved surface high above a sentient abyss”. Starring Laura Jane Turner as the woman. I like how simple this is, and how it relies on the sound design and visual storytelling to make you feel the fear and intensity. But – what the heck is this place?! See below. ›››

“Just so’s you’re clear – he’s here to work.” An official UK trailer has debuted for a film titled God’s Own Country, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and Berlin Film Festival before hitting other fests around the world. The film tells the story of a young farmer boy named Johnny Saxby from Yorkshire who falls for a Romanian migrant worker who comes in to work for the season. It’s another sexual awakening story of a gay romance, but rave reviews from all the festivals have made it stand out in particular and you can see why below. Starring Josh O’Connor, Alec Secareanu, Gemma Jones, and Ian Hart. This is a seriously beautiful trailer that promises an excellent film that should live up to the praise so far. Take a look. ›››

“They only see what you want them to see.” Good Deed Entertainment has debuted the official trailer for an indie relationship drama titled Some Freaks, starring Thomas Mann from Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. The story is about a high schooler named Matt with only one eye, who falls in love with an overweight girl named Jill, played by Lily Mae Harrington. There’s two major parts to the story – once she goes off to college, she loses weight and apparently Matt doesn’t feel the same about her. The cast includes Ely Henry, Marin Ireland, Lachlan Buchanan, Nikki Massoud, and Ryan Boudreau. This already played at a few film festivals last year (including Fantasia and Rhode Island) and will be hitting limited US theaters + VOD later this summer. This film actually looks pretty good – full-on indie quirk, might be worth watching. ›››

“Look around, this isn’t what we planned.” A full-length trailer has debuted for a horror thriller premiering at the Los Angeles Film Festival this month, titled Midnighters, from director Julius Ramsay. Ramsay is making his feature directorial debut after working as an editor on TV shows like “Battlestar Galactica” and “Flashforward”. The film is set around New Year’s Eve following a couple that accidentally kills someone on their way home. But there’s a twist when they realize this might have been a setup, while other mysterious things start to happen. Starring Alex Essoe, Perla Haney-Jardine & Ward Horton. It’s described as a “taught noir thriller in the vein of Blood Simple, Shallow Grave, and Blue Ruin.” Looks like it could be good. ›››

“Strong women together are unstoppable.” Fox Searchlight has released a new featurette for the fantastic documentary Step, profiling a step dance group at a school in Baltimore. This doc premiered at Sundance to rave reviews, and was one of the audience’s favorites. It’s one of the most energetic, inspiring, exciting documentaries I’ve seen this year and I highly recommend it. This featurette is more of an introduction to “step” and what it is, and where it came from, and why it’s so important to these women. If you haven’t seen the official trailer, you can check it out here after watching this promo below. Here’s to hoping Searchlight can build up buzz and turn this doc into a big hit in theaters. It was the summer of 2002. The superhero genre was at a much different place than it is today. This was before “shared universes” were a known phrase in anyone’s vocabulary. It was before superhero movies were even a sub-genre unto themselves. A little movie (“little” even though it cost ~$130 million to make) called Spider-Man would spin its web into cinemas and explode onto the scene. It was a big hit, at the time, with the biggest opening weekend of all-time (earning $114.8 million which, back then, was a huge achievement) and it started a cultural zeitgeist that has pervaded pop culture ever since. With Sony’s latest iteration of Spidey, titled Spider-Man: Homecoming, swinging into theaters starting July 7th this summer, let’s take a look back at the original film that helped define what we’ve come to know today as the superhero movie. ›››
