When it comes to sequels, there an expectation to raise the bar. If you think of some of the best sequels of all time, whether that’s The Empire Strikes Back, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan or Aliens (to name a few), each film improved upon the foundation of the first in major ways. In the second part of our weekly Spider-Man retrospective series leading up to the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming on July 7th this summer, we take a look at how Sam Raimi raised the bar for not only Spider-Man movies, but the entire superhero genre itself with Spider-Man 2. Have You Met the Incredible Jessica James? Netflix has debuted the first teaser trailer for The Incredible Jessica James, the latest film from talented indie filmmaker Jim Strouse (of Grace Is Gone, The Winning Season, People Places Things – all three are great films). This upbeat indie comedy stars Jessica Williams from “The Daily Show” in a major breakout role as Jessica James, an aspiring playwright living in New York City struggling with the dating scene and the career scene. She meets a goofball guy that she slowly starts to fall for, played by Chris O’Dowd (not seen in this teaser). Also starring Lakeith Stanfield, Noël Wells, Megan Ketch, and Zabryna Guevara. I saw this at Sundance and it’s wonderful, providing some much-needed optimism along with an outstanding performance from Williams. Don’t miss this one, it’s so good. ›››

“There’s not a single thing I don’t hate about Bobby Riggs.” Fox Searchlight UK has revealed a new trailer for the indie sports comedy Battle of the Sexes, from the directors of Little Miss Sunshine and Ruby Sparks. Set in the 1970s, the comedy profiles the true story of a wacky tennis match between Emma Stone as tennis champ Billie Jean King, and Steve Carell as chauvinist Bobby Riggs. The match earned attention as a true “battle of the sexes”, but there seems to be more going on than just tennis. The full cast includes Elisabeth Shue, Andrea Riseborough, Natalie Morales, Alan Cumming, Eric Christian Olsen, Sarah Silverman, and Martha MacIsaac. “Someone is here with me.” A short teaser trailer has debuted for an Icelandic LGBT horror film titled Rift, made by horror filmmaker Erlingur Thoroddsen. The story is about a guy named Gunnar who receives a mysterious call from his ex-boyfriend, who is living in a secluded cabin. He goes out there to find out what’s going on, only to discover there’s some weird things happening and something haunting them outside the cabin that wants to get in. Starring Björn Stefánsson, Sigurður Þór Óskarsson, and Guðmundur Ólafsson. The film already premiered at the Göteborg Film Festival earlier this year, and is playing at a few other festivals this summer as well, including OutFest in July. “Suddenly the place I’d lived my whole life felt different.” A trailer has finally arrived for one of the best films from the Sundance Film Festival this year. Columbus is the feature directorial debut of a filmmaker known as “Kogonada“, a Korean cinephile who previously made video essays that achieved quite a bit of acclaim online. Columbus stars Haley Lu Richardson as a young woman from the town of Columbus, Indiana, a small place known for its remarkable and innovative architecture (and it’s all actually real). Her story intertwines with a Korean man played by John Cho who visits because his father, an architect, is in a coma. The cast also includes Parker Posey, Erin Allegretti, Rory Culkin, and Jim Dougherty. We published a glowing review of this from Sundance, and it’s definitely worth your time to discover. The full cast of quirky characters includes Michael Cera, Abbi Jacobson, Tavi Gevinson, Isiah Whitlock, Michaela Watkins, Olivia Lucciardi, Ben Rosenfield, Buddy Durress, Bene Coopersmith, George Sample III, and Philip Baker Hall. “You showed the world that they can’t break us no matter what the hell they do.” Lionsgate has unveiled the first trailer for David Gordon Green’s Stronger, about a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 who helped the police track down the killers. This is the second Boston Marathon bombing movie, the fist one Patriots Day opened last winter, while Lionsgate is waiting until this fall to release this one. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Jeff Bauman, who lost both legs in the bombing. The cast includes Tatiana Maslany as his wife Erin Hurley, plus Clancy Brown, Miranda Richardson, and Frankie Shaw. This actually looks a bit better than Patriots Day, mostly because it’s more personal and emotional, and I trust in DGG. ›››

“Do you know anything about witches?” This is great news for fans of classic horror. There’s a brand new remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 stylish horror film Suspiria due to arrive later this year, from director Luca Guadagnino (of A Bigger Splash, Call Me by Your Name). But before that arrives, lucky cinephiles will have the chance to revisit the original film as a pristine 35mm print of an uncut version of the film was found by the Chicago Cinema Society. “The print was rescued from an Italian cinema that had closed down and the print had gone untouched in their storage area since 1977/78.” Even more exciting, the print will be touring around the country as a restored version show in select cinemas through this year.
