“Who the hell are you?” “I’m the guy you shoulda called when you went sideways.” Lionsgate has dropped a trailer for yet another new Steven Seagal action movie, and it looks as terrible as his last one. The trailer is for a film called Cartels, formerly known as Killing Salazar. It’s made by the same director who has made all of Seagal’s recent movies, including Contract to Kill, which we featured a trailer for last year (did anyone actually watch it?). Cartels has some super cheesy, twisty plot involving a drug lord being captured, the DEA, and Seagal being Seagal. Also starring Georges St. Pierre, Martine Argent, Darren E. Scott, Massimo Dobrovic, and Luke Goss. I honestly don’t even know why I bother with trailers for films like this, I’m never going to watch it, and I hope no one else will want to either. It was a pleasure getting back to the world of Blade Runner again.” Warner Bros has unveiled a behind-the-scenes featurette for Blade Runner 2049, the sci-fi sequel directed by Denis Villeneuve. This is easily one of our most anticipated, and the more they show us, the better it looks. Holy crap. This direct sequel takes place 30 years after the original story, and stars Ryan Gosling as the new LAPD Officer who must find Deckard, who has been missing all this time. Harrison Ford returns to play Deckard, and the new cast of 2049 also includes Ana de Armas, Jared Leto, Dave Bautista, Mackenzie Davis, Robin Wright, Barkhad Abdi, Lennie James, and David Dastmalchian. All the footage in this looks stunning, and I love that everyone in this video talks about how daunting and impressive every aspect of it is. I’m so happy this movie looks this amazing. I am alone with you.” IFC Films has debuted an official US trailer for the French drama From the Land of the Moon, which first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year (not this year). This romantic story from filmmaker Nicole Garcia stars Marion Cotillard as a French woman from a small village in the South of France who falls in love with a man she meets in the Alps. Set right at the end of World War II, she is married to a man she doesn’t really love, only to find the man she really loves when she goes to a clinic in the mountains to heal her kidney stones. The full cast includes Louis Garrel, Alex Brendemühl, Brigitte Roüan, Victoire Du Bois. From the looks of it, this seems to be a very sensual, sultry thriller about a woman being allowed to be with her true love. Is that so much to ask for? Take a look. ›››

“I fight only to protect apes.” 20th Century Fox has released a new featurette for War for the Planet of the Apes, focusing on the groundbreaking, unbelievable VFX work in the movie. Weta is the VFX studio responsible for bringing to life all of the apes in the movie, which is amazing because they didn’t use a single real ape yet it’s almost impossible to tell that they aren’t real. Seriously. Weta has been improving with each of these three modern Apes movies, and this one has their best work yet. Andy Serkis returns as Caesar, and the cast includes Woody Harrelson as the Colonel. At this point, I really believe Fox needs to push Serkis for awards consideration, because it’s jaw-dropping how much his performance makes Caesar feel real. I love that Fox is showing some of this behind-the-scenes footage now. Let’s keep building up the hype. ›››

Whoa! Major news to report. Directors Phil Lord & Christopher Miller will no longer be directing the Han Solo spin-off Star Wars movie, currently in the middle of filming. Lucasfilm and Lord/Miller have both released statements, via Hollywood Reporter, confirming the shocking news and admitting to “creative differences” as the reason. The project was already most of the way through filming, apparently with only a few weeks left, yet they’re not going to finish and will instead hand over the work to someone else (yet to be announced). This is a huge shake-up in Hollywood, and will be talked about for years. For now, the original May 25th, 2018 release date is still unchanged, with reshoots planned later this summer with a new director. ›››

“What’s going on with you?” Netflix has released the first official trailer for a film titled To the Bone, an anorexia drama that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to mostly positive reviews. To the Bone is the directorial debut of producer/writer Marti Noxon, and tells a very real story of a young woman struggling with anorexia, or the inability to eat and an intense obsession with looking thin. Lily Collins stars, giving a remarkable (and almost unbelievable because of how scary thin she is) performance as Ellen. The full cast includes Keanu Reeves, Alex Sharp, Kathryn Prescott, Liana Liberato, Alanna Ubach, Carrie Preston, and Ciara Bravo. I caught this at Sundance and it’s an endearing, heartfelt film worth your time. ›››

From your audience, too.” Studiocanal has debuted the first UK trailer for a Belgian drama titled Souvenir, starring French actress Isabelle Huppert as a former singer now working at a factory in a small town. The film played at a few major festivals last fall, including Toronto and London, and is opening in US theaters later this year. Huppert plays Liliane Cheverny, who was once “Laura”, a singer who finished second in the 1974 European Song Contest. Her singing dreams are reignited when she meets a young boxer who convinces her she should make a comeback. Also starring Kévin Azaïs, Johan Leysen, Muriel Bersy, and Benjamin Boutboul. This looks like a provocative, passionate film about lost dreams. ›››

“This whole thing is just a means to an end for you, isn’t it?” CBS Films has released a new full-length trailer for an action thriller film titled American Assassin, adapted from Vince Flynn’s novel of the same name. The film tells the story of Mitch Rapp, an “ordinary every day all-American athlete and scholar” who is secretly recruited by the CIA after his girlfriend is killed. He becomes one of the best assassins they’ve ever seen, but gets into big trouble on an assignment in Beirut. The Maze Runner star Dylan O’Brien plays Mitch, and the rest of the cast includes Michael Keaton, Taylor Kitsch, Sanaa Lathan, Scott Adkins, David Suchet, and Shiva Negar. I’m curious about Kitsch as the bad guy and the big explosion at the end. ›››

This year is a stand out year for deaf performances/characters, in films like Wonderstruck, John Wick: Chapter 2, and Baby Driver. We can also include this short film, titled Dawn of the Deaf, about a few deaf people who must band together to survive in a zombie apocalypse – though it’s much more about the relationship the main girl has with everyone in her life. It was made by deaf actors in London and tries to show disability as a strength, not a weakness. Starring Caroline Ward as Sam. This takes its time to build up and establish all the characters, then tosses in some crazy twists that have a strong emotional effect. Watch in full below. ›››

“Don’t let these young guys see you fold.” Yet another PTSD movie, here we go again. Universal has debuted the trailer for a film called Thank You for Your Service, about Iraq war soldiers who have trouble fitting in once they return home. Sound familiar? It’s because we’ve seen way too many of these “Iraq war soldier has trouble returning home” movies, they’re a dime a dozen nowadays, always the telling the same story. Thank You for Your Service stars Miles Teller, Haley Bennett, Beulah Koale, Amy Schumer, Kate Lyn Sheil, and Scott Haze, which is quite an intriguing cast. This looks much better than Battle Scars, but still looks the same. The best part of this is the hanging dog tags in the title card at the end, but that’s it. ›››
