Looking Back: Raimi's 'Spider-Man 3' is Still Bad & Goofy 10 Years Later

    Spider-Man 3 Movie

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, released in May of 2007, is one weird movie. It suffers from the curse of the “threequel“, a film with potential that is overwhelmingly disappointing. In my previous editorial in this ongoing Spider-Man retrospective series, I talked about how Spider-Man 2 swings among some of the best sequels in cinema history. If Spider-Man 2 is the Superman II of the Spider-Man series, then Spider-Man 3 is the Superman III of the franchise – but with considerably weirder dance sequences. In the newest edition of our “Looking Back” series, let’s take a look at why Spider-Man 3 begins the series of diminishing returns for Spider-Man movies as one of the most disappointing threequels in modern superhero film history. ›››

  • First Trailer for True Crime Podcasters Indie Comedy 'Women Who Kill'

First Trailer for True Crime Podcasters Indie Comedy 'Women Who Kill'

    Women Who Kill Trailer

“Hottest female serial killer ever? That’s a tough call.” FilmRise has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Women Who Kill, which first premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year. The film is inspired by podcasts like “Serial” and tells the story of two women who run a podcast about serial killers called “Women Who Kill”. Writer/director Ingrid Jungermann stars as Morgan, and Ann Carr plays her co-host Jean. They used to be in a relationship but not anymore. When Morgan meets a new girl at the local Food Coop, she falls for her but it turns out she may actually be a serial killer. The cast includes Sheila Vand, Annette O’Toole, Deborah Rush, Tami Sagher, Grace Rex, and Shannon Patricia O’Neill. This looks quirky and entertaining in a very Brooklyn way, with some deep Brooklyn humor, but that’s cool. ›››

  • Trailer for 50th Anniversary 4K Restoration of Buñuel's 'Belle de Jour'

Trailer for 50th Anniversary 4K Restoration of Buñuel's 'Belle de Jour'

    Belle de Jour Trailer

“Luis Bunuel’s Masterpiece of Erotica!” A brand new official trailer has debuted for the 50th anniversary 4K restoration of Luis Buñuel’s sensual drama Belle de Jour, which first opened in cinemas all over Europe in 1967 (later in the US in 1968). Catherine Deneuve stars in the film as a young housewife who spends her midweek afternoons as a prostitute at a bordello. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and won the Golden Lion top prize; Deneuve also went on to earn a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress, too. Roger Ebert gave the film a perfect review and wrote: “It is possibly the best-known erotic film of modern times, perhaps the best.” This is an excellent modern trailer, refreshing and exciting, yet still seductive and tender. ›››

Official Trailer for Remarkable Russian Doping Documentary 'Icarus'

    Icarus Doc Trailer

“It’s worse than we thought…” Netflix has debuted a trailer for the documentary Icarus, a remarkably eye-opening, can’t-believe-it’s-true story about the Russian sports doping controversy. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews, and deserves your time and attention for being so bold and brave in telling the truth. Directed by Bryan Fogel, the film follows Fogel as he initially begins training for cycling competitions, recruiting Russian expert Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov to help him take performance enhancing drugs in an attempt to pull it off. Along the way he falls into a crazy story of deception and friendship as the two work together to tell the truth about Russia’s program and its gold medal wins at the Sochi Olympics in 2014. I saw this film at Sundance and it’s fascinating, I can’t recommend it enough to everyone. Take a look. ›››

  • Teaser for 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' Theatrical Re-Release

Teaser for 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' Theatrical Re-Release

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

“Every so often, they see something.” A mysterious new teaser debuted this week without a title or much info, aside from a link to website. The video is called “This Means Something” and shows an encounter with a UFO from the perspective of an air traffic control radar. There are a few splices of scenes from Close Encounters of the Third Kind in the video with links it to the classic Spielberg sci-fi film first released in 1977. Thanks to some investigating by SlashFilm, they’ve discovered that this is a teaser for an upcoming theatrical re-release of Close Encounters to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film. Aside from that, we don’t know which version will be showing but this is an announcement that it’s arriving September. This is cool, but I hope we get more marketing – another poster + another trailer before this returns to theaters. ›››

  • LaBeouf vs Gudnason in New Full-Length Trailer for 'Borg/McEnroe'

LaBeouf vs Gudnason in New Full-Length Trailer for 'Borg/McEnroe'

    Borg/McEnroe Teaser Trailer

“What do you want from tennis?” “To be the best.” A full-length trailer has been unveiled for tennis match film Borg/McEnroe, profiling (and recreating) the iconic 1980 tennis match between Björn Borg and John McEnroe. The film seems to now be titled simply Borg, which is odd considering it seems to be about both players and not just Borg, but this trailer proves otherwise. Maybe the title is different in certain countries around the world? Shia LaBeouf plays John McEnroe, and Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason plays Björn Borg; also starring Stellan Skarsgård, Tuva Novotny, and David Bamber. This looks damn good, even better than expected. I’m impressed by the mix of English, French and Swedish in this trailer. Worth a look. ›››

  • Final Trailer for Christopher Nolan's 'Dunkirk' Maintains the Intensity

Final Trailer for Christopher Nolan's 'Dunkirk' Maintains the Intensity

    Dunkirk TV Trailer

“She’ll fight on the beaches. She’ll fight in the fields.” With just a few weeks left to go, Warner Bros has debtued another extended TV spot/TV trailer for Christopher Nolan’s WWII action thriller Dunkirk, about the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940 at the beginning of WWII. This new spot also announces tickets and info about the 70mm showings of the film, which is the widest 70mm release ever. This stars Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, James D’Arcy, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, Jack Lowden, and Adam Long. When Allied soldiers from Belgium, Britain and France were surrounded by the German army during a fierce battle in France at the start of WWII, they had to evacuate across the English channel. I’m still so excited to see this, got a good feeling it’s going to be a very intense experience. ›››

  • First UK Trailer for 'Final Portrait' with Geoffrey Rush as Giacometti

First UK Trailer for 'Final Portrait' with Geoffrey Rush as Giacometti

    Final Portrait Trailer

“It’s like he’s determined to remain completely unsatisfied.” Vertigo has unveiled an official UK trailer for the film Final Portrait, an intriguing look at the work of acclaimed Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti. The film stars Geoffrey Rush as Giacometti, an eccentric painter and sculptor who lived in Paris for the the last years of his life. The story is all about his friendship with an American journalist named James Lord, played by Armie Hammer, who visited in the 1960s. Giacometti asked Lord to sit down for a portrait, to be finished in only a few days, but it ends up going on and on for months – his final portrait. Also starring Clémence Poésy and Tony Shalhoub. I saw this film at the Berlin Film Festival and wrote in my review that: “Rush gives such an outstanding performance, it’s compelling and thoroughly enjoyable to watch him.” ›››

Official Trailer for Another Wild Women Comedy 'Fun Mom Dinner'

    Fun Mom Dinner Trailer

“Moms – you’re on!” Momentum Pictures has debuted an official trailer for the indie party comedy Fun Mom Dinner, which actually (surprisingly) first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and also played at the Sydney Film Festival. This film is the feature directorial debut of Australian filmmaker Alethea Jones, and is fun story of four wild moms who decide to get together for a harmless “fun mom dinner.” The primary cast features Toni Collette, Katie Aselton, Molly Shannon, and Bridget Everett as the four moms. This also stars Adam Levine, Adam Scott, Paul Rust, Rob Huebel, David Wain, and Paul Rudd. There are quite a few of these “wild women” movies this year, between another Bad Moms, Rough Night, and Girls Trip. Not sure if this one looks any better or worse, but I do like the cast here. Have fun. ›››

He's Not Gone Yet – Official Trailer for 'Cult of Chucky' Horror Sequel

    Cult of Chucky Trailer

“Hi, I’m Chucky. Wanna play?” He’s back for more! An official trailer has debuted for the latest Chucky doll film, titled Cult of Chucky. This is technically the seventh film in the seemingly never-ending Child’s Play series, after Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, and Curse of Chucky most recently. This one is also going straight-to-DVD and we’re making an exception to post about it, just because it’s another Chucky movie so why not. The story follows Fiona Dourif as Nina, who is in an insane asylum where she has been convinced she murdered her entire family, not Chucky. Things are getting better until the doctor brings another “Good Guys” doll in as a therapeutic tool. Also starring Jennifer Tilly, Alex Vincent, Michael Therriault, and Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky. This looks like more of the same from the others, but what do I know. ›››
