Mesmerizing 4K Trailer for Doc 'Awaken' Produced by Terrence Malick

    Awaken Documentary Trailer

Wow. This looks totally mesmerizing. An official trailer has debuted for a new documentary titled Awaken, a visual experience around the world. Awaken is the latest film from filmmaker Tom Lowe (of the time lapse film TimeScapes previously), and it’s produced by Terrence Malick and Godfrey Reggio. For this film, Lowe spent five years with his camera team creating special camera rigs designed to capture the world like we’ve never seen it before – including adapting a gimbal to capture astrophotography timelapse at night from a helicopter in flight. The film explores “humanity’s relationship with technology and with the natural world” and is a “celebration of the spirit of life, an exploration of the Earth, and an ode to the Cosmos.” We don’t know much about this, but I most definitely want to see it on the biggest, brightest screen possible. Enjoy. ›››

  • New 'Fight Like a Girl' Featurette for Charlize Theron's 'Atomic Blonde'

New 'Fight Like a Girl' Featurette for Charlize Theron's 'Atomic Blonde'

    Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde

“Right from the beginning it was very clear the way I was going to fight… It was really intense.” Focus has released a brand new behind-the-scenes featurette for Atomic Blonde, which hits theaters in a few more weeks. Charlize Theron stars as an undercover MI6 agent (and/or assassin) sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent. All of the trailers have promised some ass kicking action, and this featurette focuses on Theron’s training process and her ability to deliver badass physical action and make it look real. The featurette includes interviews with Charlize Theron as well as director David Leitch, a stuntman who worked on co-directing John Wick (before he was uncredited) and is now directing Deadpool 2 next. I’m still excited to see this, let’s hope it lives up to the hype and the action is as good as it seems here. ›››

  • From Edgar Wright to Lord & Miller – Why Hollywood Needs Auteurs

From Edgar Wright to Lord & Miller – Why Hollywood Needs Auteurs

    Lord & Miller

What a crazy few weeks it has been for Hollywood. As we all know, directors Phil Lord & Chris Miller were shockingly fired from Disney’s still-untitled Han Solo project a few weeks ago. It was shocking because they were already several months into filming the new Star Wars Story movie, with only a couple of weeks remaining. Lucasfilm eventually announced that Ron Howard had been hired to replace them. Lord & Miller aren’t the first directors to not work well within the studio system as of late. Jon Favreau, Edward Norton, Patty Jenkins and Edgar Wright have all faced similar problems in recent years. So, are auteur filmmakers doomed? Let’s take a look at why studios like Disney & Marvel still need auteur filmmakers. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Super Weird Film 'Lemon' Directed by Janicza Bravo

Official Trailer for Super Weird Film 'Lemon' Directed by Janicza Bravo

    Lemon Trailer

“I knew you were crazy!” Magnolia Pictures has debuted the first official trailer for a film titled Lemon, from writer/director Janicza Bravo, making her feature directorial debut. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to mixed reviews, mostly because it’s so wacky and weird that not everyone will be into it. But why not give it a shot? Lemon stars Brett Gelman as a man who watches his life unravel after he is left by his girlfriend of 10 years. The ensemble cast includes Judy Greer, Michael Cera, Shiri Appleby, Fred Melamed, Rhea Perlman, Gillian Jacobs, Jon Daly, Martin Starr, Megan Mullally, Jeff Garlin, Elizabeth De Razzo, Marla Gibbs, and Nia Long. I really don’t even know what to make of this trailer – it doesn’t seem that funny, even though it’s trying hard to be funny. Maybe I’m just missing it? Take a look. ›››

  • Crazy First Trailer for Action Movie 'Savage Dog' Starring Scott Adkins

Crazy First Trailer for Action Movie 'Savage Dog' Starring Scott Adkins

    Savage Dog Trailer

“There’s a tale told somewhere south of Burma. The tale tells of a man…” XLrator Media has debuted an official trailer for an action movie titled Savage Dog, which looks like it’s straight out of the 90s as an action movie mixing guns and martial arts and a ridiculous revenge plot and so much more. Scott Adkins stars as a former champion boxer stuck in a prison in Indochina in the late 1950s. When he is released, the people running the jail don’t want him to leave and so he must figure out a way to get home. The full cast includes Marko Zaror, Juju Chan, Cung Le, Vladimir Kulich, Charles Fathy, Matthew Marsden, Sheena Chou, and the incomparable Keith David. I really don’t know how to describe this, it has some cool action but it seriously looks like this was made 30 years ago and kept in a vault until now. Check it out. ›››

  • First International Trailer for Ruben Östlund's Acclaimed 'The Square'

First International Trailer for Ruben Östlund's Acclaimed 'The Square'

    The Square Trailer

“As you all know, the hunting instinct is triggered by weakness. If you show fear, the animal will sense it.” Yes!! I love this movie, it’s so brilliant. The first international trailer has debuted for Ruben Östlund’s latest film The Square, which won the top prize Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year. And it so deserves it. Claes Bang stars as the director of a contemporary art museum in Sweden, but when his phone is stolen it sets off a series of events that lead him to an existential crisis. There’s so much crazy, amazing, genius stuff in this film and this trailer gives you a small hint at some of that – including the Justice song. This also stars Elisabeth Moss, Dominic West, Terry Notary (as the ape!), and Christopher Læssø. This was one of my favorite films of Cannes and I just cannot wait for the rest of the world to experience it. ›››

  • Imelda Staunton in UK Trailer for Romantic Comedy 'Finding Your Feet'

Imelda Staunton in UK Trailer for Romantic Comedy 'Finding Your Feet'

    Finding Your Feet Trailer

“I’m not like you, Bif, I can’t just open up like a lotus flower.” Entertainment One in the UK has debuted an official trailer for the filming Finding Your Feet, directed by Richard Loncraine. The romantic comedy stars acclaimed actress Imelda Staunton as a “middle class, judgmental snob” who discovers her husband has been having an affair with her best friend. So she moves in with her estranged, bohemian, older sister Bif, played by Celia Imrie, and is dragged along to her community dance class where she starts to find some romance again. The full cast includes Timothy Spall, Joanna Lumley, David Hayman, and John Sessions. This seems like an amusing, charming film with a superb performance from Staunton. Have fun. ›››

  • Their War Rages On in New International Trailer for 'The Dark Tower'

Their War Rages On in New International Trailer for 'The Dark Tower'

    The Dark Tower Trailer

“The tower is all that stands between light and darkness…” Sony has revealed a brand new “international” trailer for The Dark Tower adaptation, based on Stephen King’s popular book series. Directed by Danish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel, this gritty sci-fi western is about a legendary “Gunslinger” roaming an Old West-like landscape in pursuit of the Man in Black, who wants to destroy the fabled Tower. Idris Elba stars as Roland Deschain, with Matthew McConaughey as the Man in Black. Also starring Abbey Lee, Jackie Earle Haley, Fran Kranz, Tom Taylor, Katheryn Winnick, Alex McGregor, Nicholas Hamilton, Claudia Kim, and Michael Barbieri. This is honestly looking better and better with every trailer. And you know – even if this movie isn’t that great, I still think Idris Elba is a totally badass gunslinger. Love him. ›››

Watch: 'Fish Story' Short Film Discovers the Truth Behind a Fishy Tale

    Fish Story Short Film

Now this is a unique, totally fun short documentary. Fish Story is a short doc produced by The Guardian, telling the tall tale of a event that happened years ago. The story goes that in North Wales, a weatherman named Michael Fish was the host behind an event where people with “fishy” last names (Mrs. Crab, Mr. Salmon, Mrs. Bass, Mr. Mullet) would attend a dinner and be served the fish of their last name. Filmmaker Charlie Lyne attempts to figure out if the story is actually true and reach the people who put it together. I admire the way this doc is presented, with the oral storytelling and nice, clean visuals to keep us captivated. ›››
