New International Trailer for Thriller 'The Snowman' with Fassbender

    The Snowman Trailer

“He was watching us the whole time…” Universal UK has debuted a new international trailer for the serial killer thriller The Snowman, adapted from Jo Nesbø’s bestselling novel, from Swedish director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy). We’ve already seen one intense trailer for this, but this one is a bit better with some cleaner footage of the Norwegian landscapes/cityscapes. Michael Fassbender stars as a detective who investigates the disappearance of a victim on the first snow of winter. He begins to believe there’s a serial killer on the lose who may start killing again soon if he can’t stop him first. The cast includes Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Val Kilmer, and J.K. Simmons. This was filmed entirely on location in Norway in the cities of Oslo and Bergen and the area of Rjukan. This really looks like it might be great, I’m down for a snowy serial killer film with some good twists. Check it out. ›››

Saoirse Ronan in Trailer for Greta Gerwig's Directorial Debut 'Lady Bird'

    Lady Bird Movie Trailer

“You both have such strong personalities.” A24 has unveiled the first trailer for actress Greta Gerwig’s feature directorial debut, an indie coming-of-age drama titled Lady Bird, being released by the excellent A24. This film actually just premiered at the Telluride Film Festival over the weekend to rave reviews, which means it already has some great buzz to go along with this trailer. Saoirse Ronan stars as Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson, a quirky teenager living in Northern California with her eccentric nurse mother. The cast includes Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges, Timothée Chalamet, Beanie Feldstein, Lois Smith, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Odeya Rush, Jordan Rodrigues, and Marielle Scott. As seen in this trailer, the film examines “both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter.” Looks great! I’m looking forward to seeing it, A24’s films are always top quality. ›››

  • First Trailer for Cheesy High School Horror Thriller 'Deadly Detention'

First Trailer for Cheesy High School Horror Thriller 'Deadly Detention'

    Deadly Detention Trailer

“Attention students, the rules have changed. I am your new principal.” Yes, I fully admit this looks terrible, but thankfully you don’t have to waste any time or money on this if you don’t want to – all trailers are free to watch! Deadly Detention, originally known as The Detained before the title change, is a new horror thriller about five “archetypal teens” (eye roll already) serving detention who “find themselves in a life or death situation.” The main cast includes Henry Zaga, Alex Frnka, Sarah Davenport, Coy Stewart, Jennifer Robyn Jacobs, Kevin Blake, and Gillian Vigman. At least they admit in the description that the characters are archetypal, because everything about this looks cheesy and awful and not worth watching. ›››

Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool Trailer

“Could you take me to Liverpool? I could get better there…” Lionsgate UK has unveiled the first trailer for a film titled Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, which just premiered at the Telluride Film Festival this weekend to great reviews. It will play at TIFF next and the London Film Festival, too. The film tells the story of Academy Award-winning actress Gloria Grahame, as played by the ever-so-talented Annette Bening. It mainly focuses on her passionate romance with a much younger movie star named Peter Turner, as played by Jamie Bell, and it’s based on Turner’s actual memoir. The full cast includes Julie Walters, Vanessa Redgrave, Kenneth Cranham, Stephen Graham, and Frances Barber. Grahame starred in The Big Heat, It’s a Wonderful Life, In a Lonely Place, and Oklahoma!, and won the Oscar for her role in The Bad and the Beautiful. Venice 2017: 'Victoria & Abdul' is an Immensely Charming, Moving Film

    Victoria & Abdul

“I am cantankerous, greedy, fat. I am perhaps, disagreeably, attached to power. But I am anything but insane.” Even if she is cantankerous and grumpy and stubborn and disagreeable, there’s a sweet side to her, if only you can get close enough to experience it. Victoria & Abdul is the latest from veteran filmmaker Stephen Frears (who last made Florence Foster Jenkins). It tells the true story of an unlikely friendship between Queen Victoria of England and a young Indian clerk named Abdul Karim around the end of the 19th century. They become very close friends and this brings her much joy, but upsets the predominantly racist royal household around her. It starts out a bit campy, but becomes very charming once it gets into it. ›››

Official Trailer for Documentary 'Bobbi Jene' About the Dancer's Life

    Bobbi Jene Doc Trailer

“I need to do what I need to do…” Oscilloscope Labs has debuted a trailer for a documentary titled Bobbi Jene, profiling the life and provocative work of famed dancer Bobbi Jene Smith. Bobbi is an American dancer who, after 10 years in a prominent position at the world-famous Batsheva Dance Company in Israel, decides to leave and head home to the US to create her own boundary breaking art. This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this year, where it won Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Doc overall. As described, the film “delves into what it takes for a woman to gain her own independence in the extremely competitive world of dance and to find self-fulfillment in the process.” Seems like a very promising and also important doc from the dance world, with plenty of “erotic energy” and much more to offer. Worth a watch. ›››

  • Venice 2017: George Clooney's Dark Comedy 'Suburbicon' is Perfection

Venice 2017: George Clooney's Dark Comedy 'Suburbicon' is Perfection

    Suburbicon Review

Well, it looks like George Clooney has brought us the best Coen Brothers movie in years. Suburbicon is perhaps Clooney’s best work as a director and it’s one of the most humorous, deceptive, devilishly enjoyable dark comedies this entire year. I walked out of the cinema in Venice totally high, my heart racing, because I was so overwhelmed by how perfect it is, and by how much I loved every last twist and turn and reveal. It’s so very dark, witty, engrossing, sharp, and lovable, in all the right ways. Suburbicon is co-written by Joel & Ethan Coen, with Clooney & Grant Heslov, so it’s fair to call this a Coen Brothers film. But I don’t want to get too wrapped up in that, because Clooney’s direction here is seriously impressive and deserves the praise. ›››

  • Venice 2017: 'Brawl in Cell Block 99' is Brutal, Slow Burn Satisfaction

Venice 2017: 'Brawl in Cell Block 99' is Brutal, Slow Burn Satisfaction

Brawl in Cell Block 99 Review

This is not an action movie. Even though it has some very gritty, brutal action scenes, it is more of a thriller (or drama) than anything. That said, action fans should take an interest in this one anyway. Brawl in Cell Block 99 is the latest film from director S. Craig Zahler, of Bone Tomahawk previously, and he once again proves his prowess at delivering totally gnarly moments of violence. Zahler’s Brawl in Cell Block 99 is a slow burn drama about a man and his wife, and the lengths he goes to protect her and raise a family safely in a nice house. It’s kind of, sort of criticizing the American dream in a subtle way, but also glorifying a hero made of muscles who only says exactly what is necessary and never anything else. He is so fucking badass. ›››

  • Second Trailer for 'Marshall' Starring Chadwick Boseman as Thurgood

Second Trailer for 'Marshall' Starring Chadwick Boseman as Thurgood

    Marshall Movie Trailer

“I only represent innocent people, people accused of their race.” Open Road Films has unveiled the second official trailer for the film Marshall, starring Chadwick Boseman as Thurgood Marshall. This tells the inspiring story of the man who became the first African American Supreme Court Justice, focusing on the time when he was a “young rabble-rousing” attorney for the NAACP in the 1940s and 1950s. We featured the first trailer earlier in the summer for this, and it looks pretty damn good. The full cast in the film includes Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens, Sterling K. Brown, and James Cromwell. This is obviously meant to be an inspiring, rousing story and it seems like it will be exactly that – so you know what to expect. ›››

Watching Excellent Films on the Lido at My First Venice Film Festival

    Venice Film Festival

My goodness, this is a beautiful place. I am currently in Venice attending the Venice Film Festival, aka Venezia 74, for my very first time. After nine years in a row attending the Telluride Film Festival, I decided to switch things up and head down to Venice. Honestly, the main reason is that I could not afford the cost of going to Telluride. Now that I live in Berlin, the total cost of flying back, staying in the city, and buying a badge was just too much. As crazy as it sounds, flying down to Venice and attending this festival is actually cheaper. Telluride and Venice both take place at the same time, and they both play many of the same films. But they take place on opposite sides of the world so I had to choose one or the other. But it doesn’t matter, you can watch great movies anywhere around the world and I’m lucky to be able to enjoy this lovely festival. ›››
