How 'The Last Jedi' & 'Blade Runner 2049' Prove a Hero Can Be Anyone

    Office K + Rey

If two of the most anticipated movies from this year – Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 – have anything in common, it’s that they are both science fiction and fantasy movies rich with new ideas. In addition, they are also both polarizing films, garnering a divisive response from both hardcore Star Wars devotees and mainstream audiences. In this editorial, however, I want to examine another common thread that binds both movies: how they both deconstruct decades of shared franchise history to show how a hero can be anyone. Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Blade Runner 2049 have something characteristically in common. You might not have noticed this at first, but both films feature heroes, Daisy Ridley’s Rey and Ryan Gosling’s Officer K, that are more similar than you might think. ›››

Watch: Video Compares 'Dunkirk' Footage with Real Archival Footage

    Dunkirk Footage

“Hope is a weapon. Survival is victory.” One of the standout movies from 2017 is Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan’s intense and riveting WWII thriller about the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940 at the beginning of World War II. Nolan put a great amount of effort in recreating the scenes and experiences as accurately as possible, and that can be sensed when watching the movie on a big screen. Editor and cinema lover Titouan Ropert has created a video featuring six minutes of side-by-side examples of photography & archival footage from WWII compared directly to footage from Nolan’s Dunkirk. It’s actually breathtaking to see how remarkably accurate it is, and makes me appreciate the movie even more. A few comparisons have been made on social media already, but this video shows how incredibly meticulous Nolan was on this movie. It’s worth a watch. ›››

The year is almost over, there’s only a few more movies to open in these final few weeks, but that means it’s time to start looking back and appreciating the year in movies. 2017 gave us some incredible movies, big and small, weird and crazy, entertaining and emotional. This final video recap is made by the “Movie Nerds” YouTube channel, and is called (by them) the “2017 Movie Mashup Supercut“. It packs in footage from pretty much all of the big movies this year, including Blade Runner 2049, Detroit, Wonder Woman, Blade of the Immortal, Wind River, Raw, Dunkirk, Get Out, Coco, Wonder, Logan, Free Fire, and many others. • Final Quote-Filled Trailer for Ridley Scott's 'All the Money in the World'

Final Quote-Filled Trailer for Ridley Scott's 'All the Money in the World'

All the Money in the World Trailer

“I don’t have any money…” “Get it from your father-in-law – he has all the money in the world.” Sony has dropped one final trailer for Ridley Scott’s movie All the Money in the World, which has been making headlines recently with the last minute Christopher Plummer update. The movie hits theaters Christmas Day, so this is truly a last minute trailer in hopes it will drum up buzz and get people into theaters to watch it (I guess the reshoots cost a lot of money). The film is about the true story from the 1970s of a massive kidnapping plot arranged by a left-wing paramilitary organization in Italy. Plummer plays the “richest man in the world” oil tycoon J. Paul Getty. All the Money in the World also co-stars Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Williams, Timothy Hutton, Charlie Plummer, Andrew Buchan, Olivia Grant, Teresa Mahoney, Romain Duris, and Charlie Shotwell. This is an intense trailer, and should make you excited to see this. ›››

  • Eugenio Derbez & Anna Faris in Comedy Remake 'Overboard' Trailer

Eugenio Derbez & Anna Faris in Comedy Remake 'Overboard' Trailer

    Overboard Trailer

“I have an idea that is poetic in its justice.” Pantelion Films has released the official trailer for a remake of an 80’s comedy titled Overboard, from first-time movie directors Bob Fisher & Rob Greenberg. The plot is about a spoiled, wealthy yacht owner who is thrown overboard and becomes the target of revenge from his mistreated employee. It’s a remake of the 1987 December comedy directed by Garry Marshall and starring Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell. This new version of Overboard stars Eugenio Derbez and Anna Faris, plus Eva Longoria, John Hannah, Swoosie Kurtz, Josh Segarra, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Emily Maddison, and Mel Rodriguez. This looks a bit too wacky for my tastes, especially when she brings him home and makes him do all the work and daddy duties. Yeah, I get it, just not my kind of comedy. Dive in & have fun. ›››

Official Trailer for Wall Street Fraud Documentary 'The China Hustle'

    The China Hustle Documentary Trailer

“This was simply too good to be true.” Magnolia Pictures has debuted the official trailer for Jed Rothstein’s documentary The China Hustle, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and the Palm Springs Film Festival. The film investigates a “massive web of fraud” on Wall Street involving high-return investments in China. Even though you think you’ve heard of all the financial scams, there’s apparently another one and this doc looks into that. “An unsettling and eye-opening Wall Street horror story about Chinese companies, the American stock market, and the opportunistic greed behind the biggest heist you’ve never heard of.” And once you’ve seen this, you will definitely have heard of it and now the big question becomes – what do we do about it? How do we stop it? I’m curious to see this doc, but afraid it’s going to make me upset. Take a look. ›››

    Chappaquiddick Trailer

“What do we do to help the Senator?” “We tell the truth…” Entertainment Studios has unveiled the first official trailer for a film titled Chappaquiddick, referencing the Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts and the accident that occurred there in 1969. This first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival this year to mostly positive reviews, and will hit theaters in April. Chappaquiddick stars Jason Clarke as politician Ted Kennedy, whose political career became derailed in the aftermath of a fatal car accident that claimed the life of a young campaign strategist, Mary Jo Kopechne, as played by Kate Mara. The film’s full cast includes Clancy Brown, Ed Helms, Bruce Dern, Jim Gaffigan, Andria Blackman, Olivia Thirlby, and Taylor Nichols. Trailer for Netflix's National Lampoon Film 'A Futile & Stupid Gesture'

A Futile and Stupid Gesture Trailer

Netflix has launched an official trailer for a new film titled A Futile and Stupid Gesture, from director David Wain, who is already working with Netflix to bring you the “Wet Hot American Summer” series. The sort-of-doc film profiles Doug Kenney, the comedy wunderkind who co-created the “National Lampoon”, Caddyshack, and Animal House. It premieres at the Sundance Film Festival and hits Netflix next January. One description explains: “In the 1970s and ’80s, National Lampoon’s success and influence creates a new media empire overseen in part by the brilliant and troubled Doug Kenney.” This reminds me of the other National Lampoon documentary that played at Sundance, Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead. This is much more than just a doc as it features a full cast recreating many of the moments in Kenney’s life. Will Forte plays Kenney, and the cast includes Emmy Rossum, Domhnall Gleeson, Seth Green, Natasha Lyonne, Annette O’Toole, Paul Scheer, Joe Lo Truglio, and Finn Wittrock.
