There was a time where DC was all intense and dark, and Marvel was light and silly. Yet, over the years, Marvel got serious. And it was great. But a large part of me missed the silliness (and let’s face it, we could all use a little silliness right now, if only for a couple of hours to escape the shitshow happening outside!). With Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, that silliness is back by the space-ship load. Waititi sets the tone early and it’s evident that, for that time you spend in the cinema, all will be well. Big, bold moments are set up and immediately torn down with a witty one-liner that takes the legs out from under you and, despite some pretty twisted content, you’re never really worried because you know you’re in very safe hands. ›››

“We won’t last five minutes if the Germans attack…” Lionsgate UK has unveiled a new trailer for a WWI drama titled Journey’s End, which just premiered at the Toronto and London Film Festivals this fall. The film is based on a seminal British play about WWI, set mostly in a dugout in Aisne, France in 1918. The story is about a group of ragged British officers, led by the mentally disintegrating young officer Stanhope, who are awaiting their fate in this wretched place. The three officers are played by Paul Bettany, Stephen Graham, and Tom Sturridge, and the cast includes Sam Claflin as a Captain, plus Asa Butterfield as a young new officer; as well as Toby Jones, Robert Glenister, Oliver Dimsdale, and Miles Jupp. This looks like a solid, emotionally draining, riveting drama that is once again about the brutal horrors of war, specifically the trench warfare of WWI. “Perhaps I’m looking for trouble?” It’s here! Focus Features has unveiled the first official trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, Phantom Thread, which is also the final film starring acclaimed actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who is retiring from acting (for now). Set in the 1950s in London, the sensual story is about renowned dressmaker named Reynolds Woodcock, as played by Day-Lewis, whose “carefully tailored life” is disrupted by love. The cast includes Lesley Manville, Vicky Krieps, Camilla Rutherford, Jane Perry, and others. According to Focus, the movie “paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running.” Sounds, and looks, ravishing. This also looks like the kind of film that will make dress-lovers go crazy with joy at the costumes in the film. Watch it below. ›››

“Do you trust her?” The Orchard has debuted an official trailer for an indie crime thriller titled Thumper, from writer/director Jordan Ross. This stars Eliza Taylor (seen on “The 100”) as a new student at a drug-ridden high school in an impoverished California town. She befriends a local drug dealer, but ends up way too deep in the local drug ring. The cast includes Daniel Webber, Pablo Schreiber, Lena Headey, Ben Feldman, and Brigitte Kali. This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival but didn’t emerge with much buzz. There’s some impressive cinematography in this trailer, but the rest of it seems like another typical small-town crime thriller, once again about teens caught up in the craziness unable to escape. We really are living in the Golden Age of documentaries. There are so many extraordinary documentaries released every year, and too many get lost in the mix, or go unnoticed, when they deserve a better audience. There’s also so many different kinds of documentaries – from music docs to political discoveries to historical stories to human experiences. Makala is a film that is all about the raw, visceral experience, and it is jaw-dropping incredible. Made by French filmmaker Emmanuel Gras, Makala follows one man from Congo (aka Democratic Republic of the Congo) who makes charcoal on his own then carries it on a bike to a nearby city to sell. That’s all this documentary is, but let me assure you, it is utterly gripping, eye-opening cinema. ›››

Trust in Richard Linklater. Like any great filmmaker, no matter what story he decides to tell, or whatever film he wants to make, it’ll almost always be good. I will full well admit that I had low expectations for this film before going in to see it, I’m not exactly sure why. Maybe I just didn’t want to see another film about American soldiers (there have been so many recently), or veterans complaining about how things are, or the American flag. Whatever it was, I was wrong. Linklater’s Last Flag Flying is an impressively level-headed, intelligent film with some nice, heartwarming conversations amongst good friends. It’s a buddy film about three aging veterans who go on a roadtrip around America, reminiscing about their pasts and catching up. ›››

“Let me prove to you that I can do it.” Studiocanal UK has debuted the official UK trailer for a Germany comedy film titled My Blind Date with Life, or originally Mein Blind Date mit dem Leben in German. The film tells the true story of a student who nearly became blind as a teenager. He keeps his limited eye sight a secret and starts working at a hotel in Munich, soon falling in love with a woman. Kostja Ullmann stars as the lead character Saliya Kahawatte, with a cast including Anna Maria Mühe, Nilam Farooq, Sylvana Krappatsch, Ludger Pistor, Johann von Bülow, and Herbert Forthuber. This looks like a very cheesy German romantic comedy, but there’s a heartwarming story behind it all. That said, this doesn’t seem like it will be good. At least you can get a glimpse at what campy German comedies are like – have fun. ›››

“Following the music leads to death…” Whoa! Looking for something to really, truly scare you? Watch this. Kinderfänger is a horror short film from director Christopher Alender, that premiered on Crypt TV’s YouTube series of horror shorts this month. The title Kinderfänger roughly translates to “child snatcher”, which makes this all the more scary when you see what happens in it. There are a few big twists, and some crazy horrific moments that you won’t see coming. But damn this is some slick, minimal filmmaking. The Kinderfänger villain is freaky as hell, one of the scariest horror creatures I’ve seen in a while. So, watch out. ›››

“It’s impossible that this is a coincidence.” IFC Films has debuted an official US trailer for a horror thriller titled I Remember You from Iceland, about a young man and woman who move into a small abandoned town in Iceland to renovate an old house. Of course, this house has a dark past and things start to happen once they arrive. While this trailer is appropriately timed for the horror season this October, the film doesn’t actually open until mid-November in America. This stars a fine set of Icelandic actors: Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Thor Kristjansson, Ágústa Eva Erlendsdóttir & Anna Gunndís Guðmundsdóttir.
