    World of Tomorrow Episode Two

“Without third generation Emily, my brain is now an obsolete storage drive without a purpose.” Alert! It’s time to watch the highly anticipated, super-intelligent, sci-fi sequel World of Tomorrow Episode Two. Acclaimed filmmaker Don Hertzfeldt is back(!) with another of his one-of-a-kind animated shorts called World of Tomorrow Episode Two (in full the title is World of Tomorrow Episode Two: Burden of Other People’s Thoughts), the sequel to his highly successful World of Tomorrow from a few years ago. We posted a teaser trailer last month, and now the full short film is available to rent on Vimeo (please support indie filmmakers like Don Hertzfeldt). This initially premiered at Fantastic Fest to many rave reviews, including a rare A+ from David Ehrlich at Indiewire. If your brain needs a reboot and refresh, this film will help. Enjoy. ›››

  • First Trailer for Sci-Fi Action Movie 'Scorched Earth' with Gina Carano

First Trailer for Sci-Fi Action Movie 'Scorched Earth' with Gina Carano

    Scorched Earth Trailer

“What makes you so different than the bounties you drag in here?” An official trailer has debuted online for a post-apocalyptic sci-fi action movie titled Scorched Earth, from actor-turned-director Peter Howitt. Set in a future where Earth has been ravaged (scorched?) and destroyed, the story follows a bounty hunter, played by Gina Carano, who gets into some major trouble when she tries to bring down a ruthless outlaw. This seems like such an odd, unoriginal mashup of bounty hunters, post-apocalyptic tropes, and maybe a bit of sci-fi, but not really. The full cast includes John Hannah, Stephanie Bennett, Alisha Newton, Ryan Robbins, Nathan Mitchell, and Patrick Gilmore. I hate to be so blunt, but this looks like a really terrible made-for-TV SyFy film. I’m really not that interested in seeing this, but check it out below anyway. ›››

  • Dylan Minnette in First Trailer for Netflix's Horror 'The Open House'

Dylan Minnette in First Trailer for Netflix's Horror 'The Open House'

    The Open House Trailer

“Death… it’s like it moves in and never leaves.” Netflix has debuted the first trailer for a horror thriller The Open House, which is a new horror that has kind of come out of nowhere. The story is about a mother and her son who, following a tragedy, move to a relative’s vacant vacation home, where eerie and unexplained forces conspire against them. This doesn’t sound like much, but maybe there’s something more to it – you will get a glimpse in this trailer. Piercey Dalton and Dylan Minnette (from “13 Reasons Why”) star as mother & son, along with Patricia Bethune, Sharif Atkins, and Matt Angel (who also co-directed the film). This looks like a standard haunted house + grief thriller, if you need another one of these in your life. ›››

Watch: 'Twisted' Short on Legend of a Twister Hitting During 'Twister'

    Twisted Short Film

“This is something that you can’t forget.” You may have heard of this story, you may have not. There’s an urban legend that during a showing of the tornado movie Twister, which opened in the summer of 1996, an actual tornado struck a drive-in sometime around the scene where a tornado hits a drive-in theater in the movie. That seems all too coincidental, but apparently the rumors spread and it became a myth, a story that was kept alive and retold by those who believed it. This short film, Twisted, attempts to determine whether this really happened and get to the bottom of the story. Not only is it a fascinating story, but this short film is superbly directed, with lots of great footage and interviews and more. Take a break and watch this below. ›››

  • Nicolas Cage in Official Trailer for Crazy Action Movie 'Mom and Dad'

Nicolas Cage in Official Trailer for Crazy Action Movie 'Mom and Dad'

    Mom and Dad Trailer

“We have to get out of the house before mom and dad come home!” Momentum Pictures has released the trailer for Mom and Dad, a wild ‘n crazy action movie from Brian Taylor, one half of “Neveldine/Taylor” (of Crank, Crank: High Voltage, Gamer, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance). The concept for this is nuts – something starts making parents go crazy and kill their kids. Yeah, seriously, the opening act shows this and it’s freaky. Two kids smarten up and try to safely evade their parents until the madness dies down. Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair star as the parents, and Anne Winters and Zackary Arthur as their kids. I saw this movie at the Sitges Film Festival and it’s fun, in a very wicked way, but it’s not that great. It’s a quick, throwaway late night movie when there’s nothing better to watch – and Cage’s craziness fits perfectly. Enjoy. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Super Creative, Psychedelic Horror Film 'Like Me'

Official Trailer for Super Creative, Psychedelic Horror Film 'Like Me'

    Like Me Trailer

“An edgy vision of millennial lunacy.” Kino Lorber has debuted an official trailer for the indie psychedelic horror feature titled Like Me, the feature debut of director Robert Mockler. This film is a reflection of the times, telling a twisted coming-of-age story about a young woman who sets out on a crime spree that she broadcasts on social media. Starring Addison Timlin (from Little Sister, Fallen, Submission), along with Ian Nelson, Jeremy Gardner, and Larry Fessenden (who also produced it). This has some seriously trippy, neon visuals and Jodorowsky-esque set pieces that some will love, some will hate, but I’m definitely curious. The film “takes the viewer into a world of fabricated personalities and offers a thought-provoking portrait of isolation in our increasingly digital world.” Worth a watch, just for the totally wild visuals alone. ›››

  • New International Trailer for Eva Green & Alicia Vikander's 'Euphoria'

New International Trailer for Eva Green & Alicia Vikander's 'Euphoria'

    Euphoria Trailer

“If you leave, I’ll still do it.” This is an intriguing film that may not show up in US theaters for quite some time. Euphoria is the latest film from Swedish filmmaker Lisa Langseth, her first English language feature, and it stars two incredible actors: Eva Green and Alicia Vikander. The story follows these sisters as they travel through Europe to a beautiful country mansion. At first we’re not sure why they’re going there, but soon discover that one of them wants to go there to end her life. The cast also includes the great Charlotte Rampling with a strong presence throughout, as well as Charles Dance, Mark Stanley, and Adrian Lester. This is our first look at a full trailer and I am very curious about this film, though the buzz seems to be mixed. I like the whole “freedom of choice” concept and I’m curious to see what revelations this contains. ›››

Official US Trailer for Samuel Maoz's Award-Winning Film 'Foxtrot'

    Foxtrot Trailer

“Did you know the foxtrot is a dance?” Sony Classics has finally unveiled an official US trailer for one of the best films of 2017, titled Foxtrot, which is Israel’s main entry into the Academy Awards this year. Foxtrot premiered at the Venice, Telluride & Toronto Film Festivals and we posted a teaser trailer during its festival run. Now we finally get a full trailer and you can get a glimpse at this masterpiece. Foxtrot is about a family who must face the facts when their son is killed at a desolate military outpost. The film tells both sides of the story, starting with the parents. Featuring Lior Ashkenazi, Sarah Adler, Yonaton Shiray, and Shira Haas. I caught this in Venice and flipped for it (read my review), a phenomenal film with exceptional sound design, cinematography, performances, and an emotional rollercoaster of a story that you will never forget. ›››

    Best Cinematography of 2017

With the year coming to an end, it’s time to look back at the movies that defined the year in cinema. One of our favorite websites, No Film School, has put together a superb video to highlight & discuss their picks for the Best Cinematography of 2017. Not only is the video mesmerizing to watch with all of this lovely cinematography, but they completely nailed the selection – picking out, really, all the best cinematography, including from excellent documentaries like Chasing Coral (one of my favorites), Casting JonBenét, and Kedi. (The only big film missing, to me, is Call Me By Your Name…) Of course they feature Blade Runner 2049 (go, Roger Deakins, go!) and Dunkirk, along with Mudbound, Wonder Wheel, Good Time, The Florida Project, and Columbus. Yep, all the best films right there. This year end movie recap video is a must watch. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Underrated Indie 'Freak Show' Starring Alex Lawther

Official Trailer for Underrated Indie 'Freak Show' Starring Alex Lawther

    Freak Show Trailer

“What am I going to do with you?” IFC Films has debuted an official US trailer for an underrated indie dramedy titled Freak Show, which played under-the-radar at a few festivals this year after premiering in Berlin. But I’m guessing most people haven’t heard of it. Freak Show is about a “fabulous, glitter-bedecked, gender-bending teenager” named Billy Bloom, played by up-and-coming young actor Alex Lawther, and his experiences at a public high school. It tells a very peculiar story of how to be who you are and not let it affect you, even if you’re a freak or weirdo or whatever. His mother is played by Bette Midler, and the cast includes Laverne Cox, Ian Nelson, Abigail Breslin, and AnnaSophia Robb. This is actually a very entertaining film that is worth seeking out, no really. I first saw this at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the summer, and wrote a review here. It has a great soundtrack and plenty of smart humor. Check it out below. ›››
