Full-Length Trailer for Netflix's New 'Benji' Film Starring Kiele Sanchez

    Benji Movie Trailer

“He’s not just any dog – he’s Benji.” Netflix has debuted the full-length trailer for their new Benji movie, an update/remake of the original classic dog hero movie from the 70s. We posted a short teaser trailer for this last week, but this full trailer actually looks great. The story of Benji follows one orphaned puppy and Carter and Frankie, two capricious New Orleans school kids who strike up a friendship with the tenacious street dog. When they end up kidnapped by robbers who are in over their heads, Benji and his scruffy sidekick come to the rescue. The film stars Kiele Sanchez, Gabriel Bateman, and Darby Camp. It’s directed by Brandon Camp, whose father Joe Camp created the original. This looks quite adorable, really want to see it. ›››

We’re close to wrapping up the awards season with almost all the statutes & prizes handed out, only a few more left – next up are the biggest screenplay awards. The Writers Guild of America has announced the winners of the 2018 WGA Awards. Last year, the big WGA winners were Moonlight (Original), written by Barry Jenkins, and Arrival (Adapted), written by Eric Heisserer adapted from Ted Chiang’s short story; plus Command and Control winning the award for Best Documentary. What have fellow writers determined to be the best scripts of 2017? The winners are Get Out (Original), written by Jordan Peele, plus Call Me By Your Name (Adapted), written by James Ivory adapted from André Aciman’s novel. Brett Morgen also won the Best Documentary award for Jane. These are some of my favorite films, so this is wonderful. ›››

  • Full International Trailer for Spanish Horror Fantasy Film 'Errementari'

Full International Trailer for Spanish Horror Fantasy Film 'Errementari'

    Errementari Trailer

This looks freaky cool. A full-length international trailer has debuted for a Spanish horror fantasy film titled Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil, which has been playing at a few of the big horror film festivals in Europe since premiering in Sitges late last year. From Spanish filmmaker Paul Urkijo Alijo, Errementari does tell the story of a blacksmith outside of a small town, who is perhaps possessed by the devil. It’s actually about a government commissioner investigating the blacksmith, and a young orphan girl named Usue who manages to sneak inside the smithy’s place and discover the truth. Errementari stars Kandido Uranga as the blacksmith Patxi, Uma Bracaglia as Usue, plus Eneko Sagardoy, Ramón Aguirre, José Ramón Argoitia, Gorka Aguinagalde, Josean Bengoetxea, and Iñigo de la Iglesia. I’m not sure what to make of this, could be good or could be bad. The shot of the devil at the end is wicked. ›››

  • William Jackson Harper in First Full Trailer for Thriller 'They Remain'

William Jackson Harper in First Full Trailer for Thriller 'They Remain'

    They Remain Trailer

“When I’m into something, I can’t let it go.” Paladin has debuted the trailer for a slow burn psychological thriller titled They Remain, from writer/director Philip Gelatt. This first premiered at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival last fall, but hasn’t played at many other festivals. Adapted from one of Laird Barron’s short stories, the film is about two scientists, who share a romantic history, that are tasked with investigating unnatural animal behavior on the site of a Manson Family-style cult’s compound. Actor William Jackson Harper (seen in Paterson, and on “The Good Place”) stars along with Rebecca Henderson. This is one of those psychological films that slowly breaks down into the question of “what is real and what is imagined.” It also seems like a good companion to Alex Garland’s Annihilation, strangely enough. Worth a quick look. ›››

  • Another New Trailer for That 'Overboard' Remake Starring Anna Faris

Another New Trailer for That 'Overboard' Remake Starring Anna Faris

    Overboard Trailer

“I have an idea… that is poetic in its justice.” Pantelion Films has unveiled a official trailer for the comedy remake Overboard, updating the 1987 movie with Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell. The plot is about a spoiled, wealthy yacht owner who is thrown overboard and becomes the target of revenge from his mistreated employee. We featured the first trailer for this late last year, and the release is coming up in April. This new version of Overboard stars Eugenio Derbez and Anna Faris, as well as Eva Longoria, John Hannah, Swoosie Kurtz, Josh Segarra, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Emily Maddison, and Mel Rodriguez. This looks amusing, a bit cheesy, with some revenge humor you may love or may hate. How many people are familiar with the original? Is it really necessary to remake this? Maybe it’s just all about getting back at the rich man. ›››

  • Talented Icelandic Composer Jóhann Jóhannsson Has Died at Age 48

Talented Icelandic Composer Jóhann Jóhannsson Has Died at Age 48

    Jóhann Jóhannsson

Oh no. This is so tragic. Icelandic musician / composer Jóhann Jóhannsson has passed away, according to multiple reports online (see: THR) that confirm the news with his manager. According to the reports, Jóhannsson died at age 48 in Berlin, where he was living, though no other details about what happened are known yet. This hits really hard, because Jóhannsson was on his way to starting an awesome career as a very talented, very unique composer for films as well as theatre, dance and TV. His most recent work includes the score for Darren Aronofsky’s mother! (not in the final cut), the Danish film In the Blood, and Colin Firth’s The Mercy. He also earned two Oscar nominations for his scores for The Theory of Everything and Sicario. ›››

  • Official Trailer for 'Ramen Heads' Documentary About the Best Ramen

Official Trailer for 'Ramen Heads' Documentary About the Best Ramen

    Ramen Heads Trailer

“It’s worth waiting a whole day just to eat this ramen.” FilmBuff has released the trailer for a delectable documentary titled Ramen Heads from Japan, profiling five of the finest Japanese ramen chefs and their techniques. If you love ramen, you have to see this. If you don’t know what ramen really is, you have to see this. If you love good food, you have to see this. Koki Shigeno’s Ramen Heads is a fascinating culinary film about what makes ramen so great, and how dedicated to their craft these various chefs are. “As a chef maybe you need to be more of a ramen head than your customers. You need to make the soup so good that people never get tired of it, even if they eat it every day.” I caught this at IDFA and it’s an okay doc, felt more like a film best for train/bus trips than the cinema, but it will make you love ramen even more. Get a taste below. ›››

New Trailer for GKids' Release of Animated 'Satellite Girl & Milk Cow'

Satellite Girl and Milk Cow Trailer

“True love may fly into your heart!” GKids has debuted a new official trailer for their upcoming released of the Korean animated movie Satellite Girl and Milk Cow, or The Satellite Girl and Milk Cow / Uribyeol Ilho-wa Eollukso, from “the brilliant and slightly twisted mind” of writer & director Chang Hyung-yun. This film was actually released back in 2014 in Korea, and played at a few film festivals in 2014 and 2015, but is just now getting released in US theaters four years later. Satellite Girl and Milk Cow is described as “a heartfelt and wildly entertaining commentary on the possibility for human connection in the crazy, mixed-up, post-modern world we live in.” GKids’ president David Jesteadt is also excited about showing it to US audiences, saying it’s “a truly original, fantasy anime sci-fi rom-com, just bursting with humor and heart. I’m hoping as many people as possible get the opportunity to see this remarkable film.” This looks crazy fun. ›››

  • Fun Olympics Spot for Animated 'The Grinch' Movie is Our First Look

Fun Olympics Spot for Animated 'The Grinch' Movie is Our First Look

    The Grinch TV Spot

“Home stay home.” Universal has debuted a new TV spot to promote the Olympics featuring footage from the new animated version of The Grinch. We still haven’t seen an actual trailer for this movie yet, so this is our first look and it’s a fun 30-second spot showing off the furry green character. This version of Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch is being made by Illumination Entertainment (of Despicable Me, Minions, Pets, The Lorax) and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of Christmas meanie The Grinch. No other official voice cast has been revealed yet. The footage is all themed specifically for the Olympics and likely won’t show up in the actual movie, but at least it’s something to start with for now. I’m also not sure why the teaser poster shows a very young Grinch – perhaps we’ll see his origin story in this, too? We’ll have to wait to find out. For now, check out the new TV spot below and enjoy your first look at The Grinch movie in theaters this November. ›››

Watch: Horror Short 'Your Date is Here' by Todd Spence & Zak White

Your Date is Here Short Film

“Maybe you got the dweeb?” Just in time for some Valentine’s Day scares, enjoy this new horror short film from filmmakers Todd Spence and Zak White called Your Date is Here. It’s nice and short (only 6 minutes!), with a fun premise, and it’s effective at building up the suspense. Your Date is Here stars Becca Flinn and Dani Tiernan as a mother and daughter playing a board game one night. Things start to get weird and creepy as they keep playing, and then the pizza shows up. I’m always impressed by how easy it is to take such a simple premise, with only two characters, and create a short film that is actually effectively scary and gripping to watch. The power of great filmmaking! You don’t even need a huge budget to make a good film. ›››
