Lauren Ashley Carter in Official Trailer for Indie Sci-Fi 'Imitation Girl'

    Imitation Girl Trailer

“I’m looking for a traveling companion.” Epic Pictures Releasing has unveiled the first official trailer for a “mind-bending”, psychological sci-fi thriller titled Imitation Girl, made by writer and director Natasha Kermani. Imitation Girl stars Lauren Ashley Carter (seen in the films Darling, King Rat) as a wandering space alien who lands in the middle of the New Mexico desert and takes on the form of another woman (hence the imitation). Her counterpart is a former concert pianist living in New York City. Eventually their paths will cross, as an exploration of two lost souls. The cast includes Neimah Djourabchi, Adam David Thompson, Catherine Mary Stewart, Stefanie Woodburn, Sanam Erfani, and Kevin O’Rourke. This looks a bit too bland for my tastes. Not enough real, edgy sci-fi, just some ideas but nothing tangible. ›››

  • Final Trailer for Tyler Perry's Film 'Acrimony' Starring Taraji P. Henson

Final Trailer for Tyler Perry's Film 'Acrimony' Starring Taraji P. Henson

    Acrimony Final Trailer

“You don’t know what he did to me…” Lionsgate has debuted one final trailer for Tyler Perry’s new drama titled Acrimony, an infidelity thriller starring Taraji P. Henson. We featured the first trailer for this film last year, about a woman tired of standing by her husband who continues to lie and cheat on her. Lyriq Bent plays her husband, with a cast including Danielle Nicolet, Jazmyn Simon, Tika Sumpter, Jason Vail, and Ptosha Storey. For those wondering, the word acrimony is a noun meaning “bitterness or ill feeling”, though this trailer explains this as well. The film is told mostly through flashbacks, with Henson retelling her story of how she first met him and all the abuse she has quietly received over the years, before turning vicious and vengeful. Did she kill him in the end? Maybe, maybe. You’ll have to see this to find out. ›››

  • Edie Falco & Jay Duplass in First Trailer for Lynn Shelton's 'Outside In'

Edie Falco & Jay Duplass in First Trailer for Lynn Shelton's 'Outside In'

    Outside In Trailer

“What was it like? How’d you get through it?” The Orchard has released a trailer for an indie drama titled Outside In, the latest film from talented indie filmmaker Lynn Shelton (of Humpday, Your Sister’s Sister, Touchy Feely). This first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last fall, but it’s also playing at the SXSW Film Festival next month, which is the perfect place because Shelton is a regular there. Jay Duplass (who co-wrote the script) stars as an ex-con who returns home and struggles to get back into normal life. He falls for his old high school teacher, played by Edie Falco, and they strike up a very unique bond that also challenges them. The cast includes Kaitlyn Dever and Ben Schwartz. This doesn’t seem as comedic as Shelton’s last films, more of an humbling, emotional drama lead by these strong performances. Take a look. ›››

  • Amy Schumer Stars in First Trailer for Summer Comedy 'I Feel Pretty'

Amy Schumer Stars in First Trailer for Summer Comedy 'I Feel Pretty'

    I Feel Pretty Trailer

“Things have really changed for me.” STX Entertainment has debuted the first official trailer for summer comedy I Feel Pretty, starring comedian/actress Amy Schumer as a woman who suddenly gains extreme overconfidence and goes off to get everything she wants using her looks. Obviously she learns some lessons, mostly that “when she thought she was ugly, she may have been the most beautiful, and when she believed she was beautiful, she had started to turn a bit ugly.” The impressive cast includes Michelle Williams, Emily Ratajkowski, Busy Philipps, Rory Scovel, Aidy Bryant, Lauren Hutton, Naomi Campbell, and Adrian Martinez. This doesn’t look that good, even though they’re clearly trying to follow up Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck nicely, it doesn’t have the same humor. Even the poster is terrible. Have fun anyway. ›››

Watch: Edgar Allen Poe-Inspired, Gothic Suspense Short Film 'Bricks'

    Bricks Short Film

“You city boys – unbelievable.” Would you like some wine with your short film? Check out this Edgar Allen Poe-inspired, “Gothic suspense thriller” short titled Bricks, about a wealthy stockbroker who hires a rough builder to renovate the wine cellar underneath his country house. In the shadowy cellar they find common ground at first, but then they’ll have a falling out with chilling consequences. Not to be confused with Rian Johnson’s directorial debut Brick, this film is a tense thriller about wealth, wine and the art of bricklaying. Bricks stars Jason Flemyng and Blake Ritson, directed by Neville Pierce. I dig all the uneasy tension in these two performances, this is such a nice thriller that allows the actors to play with the audience. Enjoy. ›››

  • Guy Pearce & Pierce Brosnan in First Trailer for Thriller 'Spinning Man'

Guy Pearce & Pierce Brosnan in First Trailer for Thriller 'Spinning Man'

    Spinning Man Trailer

“I’m terrified what else you could convince yourself of…” Lionsgate has debuted the trailer for a murder mystery thriller titled Spinning Man, adapted from a book by George Harrar. This philosophical thriller is about a family man and esteemed professor at a college, who gets entangled in the investigation of a missing woman. His “off-campus dalliances” with many of his students make him the main suspect, though we don’t know who really took her. Guy Pearce plays the professor, and Pierce Brosnan plays the detective on the case, intent on pegging him as the murderer. The cast includes Minnie Driver, Odeya Rush, Alexandra Shipp, Clark Gregg, Jamie Kennedy, Sterling Beaumon, and Freya Tingley. Despite this strong cast, I actually think this looks pretty bad, a fairly derivative thriller with nothing interesting or new to offer. ›››

  • Tom Hardy in First Teaser Trailer for Ruben Fleischer's 'Venom' Movie

Tom Hardy in First Teaser Trailer for Ruben Fleischer's 'Venom' Movie

    Venom Movie Trailer

“Whatever it is, you used to be one thing… and now you’re something else.” Sony Pictures has unveiled the first teaser trailer for the Venom solo movie, a new sort-of spin-off from the Sony Spider-Man universe, focusing on the fan-favorite symbiote villain character. Tom Hardy stars as journalist Eddie Brock in this movie, directed by Ruben Fleischer (of Zombieland, 30 Minutes or Less, Gangster Squad). As usual, Sony has released two trailers – a domestic and an international teaser trailer – to give us a quick introduction. There’s some cool footage, but no actual shots of Venom (in full) revealed here yet. The full cast includes Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Riz Ahmed, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Lee, Sailor Larocque, Reid Scott, and a rumored appearance by Tom Holland as Spidey. I’m curious but still not entirely into this yet, maybe with some better footage, because I trust Fleischer knows what he’s doing. Get a look below. ›››

  • First Trailer for Swedish Film 'The Real Estate' Premiering at Berlinale

First Trailer for Swedish Film 'The Real Estate' Premiering at Berlinale

    The Real Estate

“Your options… you have two right now. Either you keep the building…” The Match Factory has debuted the first international trailer for an indie drama titled The Real Estate, premiering at the Berlin Film Festival in-competition this month. This Swedish film from directors Måns Månsson and Axel Petersén is about an aging wealthy woman who inherits an apartment building, and doesn’t know how to handle it, and all the various tenants, properly. Léonore Ekstrand stars as Nojet, the woman at the center, and the cast includes Christer Levin, Christian Saldert, Olof Rhodin, Carl Johan Merner, and Don Bennechi. This looks way crazier than it seems from the description, but that’s part of the appeal, I guess. This seems like an ideal film for the Berlin Film Festival, hopefully it’s a worthy film. For now, give this trailer a watch. ›››

  • Watch: Camping Horror Short Film 'Crittus' Made by Marcus Alqueres

Watch: Camping Horror Short Film 'Crittus' Made by Marcus Alqueres

    Crittus Horror Short Film

Watch where you camp. Beware of Crittus! Another well-made horror short that you all should check out. Crittus is written and directed by Canadian-Brazilian filmmaker Marcus Alqueres, a proof-of-concept for a nifty horror project that could be a feature. The story follows a guy named Sean, played by Felipe Abib, out on a soul-searching camping trip who encounters something weird in the forest. What could it be? You have to watch to find out. I quite like how this seems to be play like it’s a typical camping horror, but then throws a few cool twists into the mix. I definitely would like to see more from this. Alqueres is already set to work on a few other feature projects, so there’s plenty to watch out for from this filmmaker. Beware. ›››

  • Sophie Turner is Josie in Official Trailer for Mysterious Thriller 'Josie'

Sophie Turner is Josie in Official Trailer for Mysterious Thriller 'Josie'

    Josie Movie Trailer

“There’s some rumors about you…” Screen Media Films has debuted the first official trailer for an indie thriller titled Josie, starring Sophie Turner (as seen in Barely Lethal, X-Men: Apocalypse, and on “Game of Thrones”) as the titular character Josie. The film’s plot is actually focused on a mysterious man named Hank, played by Dylan McDermott, who keeps a close eye on her. Josie stirs things up when she arrives in a Southern town called Huntsville, and Hank takes a liking to her, attempting to protect her from a boy she’s been spending time with. The film’s full cast includes Jack Kilmer, Daeg Faerch, Kurt Fuller, Robin Bartlett, Lombardo Boyar, and George Todd McLachlan. Yeah, this looks like a totally compelling Southern thriller, with a strong lead performance by Turner, who also plays Phoenix in the X-Men movies. ›››
