Michelle Pfeiffer & Kiefer Sutherland in Official 'Where is Kyra?' Trailer

    Where is Kyra? Trailer

“Everywhere I go, I see her.” Great Point Media + Paladin have released an official trailer for an indie drama titled Where is Kyra?, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year (in 2017) before playing at a few other film festivals. The film stars Michelle Pfeiffer as the titular Kyra, a Brooklyn woman who loses her job and struggles to survive on her ailing mother’s income. As the weeks and months go on, her problems worsen. This leads her on a risky and enigmatic path that threatens her life. The cast includes Kiefer Sutherland, Suzanne Shepherd, and Sam Robards. This is directed by Andrew Dosunmu and features cinematography by the Academy Award-nominated Bradford Young, and music composed by Philip Young. It seems like a very heavy, very artsy film about how hard it is to stay afloat in today’s brutal society. ›››

  • Official Trailer for 'What We Started' Music Doc Featuring DJ Carl Cox

Official Trailer for 'What We Started' Music Doc Featuring DJ Carl Cox

    What We Started Trailer

“You want to share it with as many people as possible.” Abramorama has debuted the trailer for a music documentary titled What We Started, focusing on the EDM (or Electronic Dance Music) scene. I confess I am a huge EDM fan and have been listening for many years. This doc attempts to be a definitive look at the scene and the music and the people behind it all. The documentary features heavy-weight electronic dance music artists, including the infamous young new DJ, Martin Garrix, the legendary Carl Cox, as well as appearances by Erick Morillo, Moby, David Guetta, Afrojack, Paul Oakenfold, Seth Troxler, and DJ Tiesto. There are multiple cameos from musical superstars, including Usher and Ed Sheeran, who help exemplify the power and reach that electronic dance music has over mainstream music genres. This really looks damn good, seems to be a comprehensive examination of the entire culture. I’m looking forward to checking it out. ›››

  • Review: Ryan Coogler's 'Black Panther' is Gorgeous, Engaging, and Culturally Significant

Review: Ryan Coogler's 'Black Panther' is Gorgeous, Engaging, and Culturally Significant

    Black Panther Review

Originally co-created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and published by Marvel Comics, Black Panther made his first appearance in 1966’s Fantastic Four #52. The first superhero of African descent in mainstream American comics, Black Panther debuted years before early black superheroes such as the Falcon (1969), John Stewart’s Green Lantern (1971), Luke Cage (1972), and Blade (1973). Crossing racial and cultural lines, Black Panther has continued to resonate with readers over the years, spawning multiple publications, and appearing in numerous video games and animated series. It wasn’t until 2016, however, that the iconic hero made his big screen debut. Included in Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther (played by Chadwick Boseman) was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s massive fan base, setting the stage for this stand-alone feature film. Enter director Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, the eighteenth entry in Marvel’s shared cinematic universe and, perhaps, the most absorbing and entertaining installment yet. ›››

  • Burt Reynolds is 'The Last Movie Star' in Official Trailer for A24 Drama

Burt Reynolds is 'The Last Movie Star' in Official Trailer for A24 Drama

    The Last Movie Star Trailer

“You are the only one stupid enough to show up…” Brutally honest line. A24 has debuted an official trailer for an indie drama titled The Last Movie Star, from writer/director Adam Rifkin. The film stars acting legend Burt Reynolds as acting legend Vic Edwards, an aging movie star who no longer has the same fame he once had. He’s invited to a tiny, two-bit film festival in Nashville, and befriends his driver, who reminds him there’s more to life than just being famous. The full cast includes Ariel Winter, Clark Duke, Ellar Coltrane, Nikki Blonsky, Kathleen Nolan, as well as Chevy Chase. This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, but like most Tribeca films, we’ve never heard of it before now. I’d rather recommend watching The Hero with Sam Elliott instead, both pretty much have the same plot, though The Hero is actually quite good. ›››

Epic Final IMAX Trailer for Steven S. DeKnight's 'Pacific Rim: Uprising'

    Pacific Rim: Uprising Trailer

“That’s what I’m talking about!” Nothing can prepare you for how much CGI this trailer has! Universal has released a final IMAX exclusive trailer for the sci-fi sequel Pacific Rim: Uprising, the action packed kaiju vs giant robots movie. Guillermo del Toro produced and help write the story, Steven S. DeKnight (of TV work) is directing. This sequel picks up after the first movie, following John Boyega as Jake Pentecost, the son of Idris Elba’s character Stacker Pentecost. The movie’s ensemble cast includes Adria Arjona, Scott Eastwood, Tian Jing, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, Rinko Kikuchi, Dustin Clare, Levi Meaden, Daniel Feuerriegel, Karan Brar, and Jin Zhang. This trailer is packed with some crazy epic footage of the kaiju vs robots battles, but I’m honestly not that excited to see it. A bit too much CGI. What about you? ›››

  • Sundance Interview: 'Minding the Gap' Director Bing Liu on Doc Films

Sundance Interview: 'Minding the Gap' Director Bing Liu on Doc Films

Bing Liu Interview - Sundance 2018

“Feedback screenings are essential to get out of your headspace.” One of my very favorite films of the 2018 Sundance Film Festival was a documentary titled Minding the Gap, made by filmmaker Bing Liu. It won over audiences and critics, and picked up the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Filmmaking at the end of the festival. Minding the Gap follows three skater kids from a small town called Rockford, Illinois as they grow up and become adults and start to realize who they really are and how they were raised. It’s quite a moving, powerful, remarkably aware film about American society and masculinity, and the struggle of breaking free from the world you were raised in, and much more. I made it my mission to meet filmmaker Bing Liu, and shake his hand, and talk to him about making this film. Bing’s the real deal. ›››

  • Luke Evans in Trailer for Kidnapping Thriller '10×10' from Suzi Ewing

Luke Evans in Trailer for Kidnapping Thriller '10×10' from Suzi Ewing

    10x10 Trailer

“This is only going to end one way…” Vertical Entertainment has unveiled a trailer for a kidnapping thriller film titled 10×10, the feature directorial debut of English filmmaker Suzi Ewing. This twisty, psychological thriller is about a man who kidnaps a woman and keeps her locked up in a 10×10 room/cell, hence the title. However, the reason he’s keeping her there is not for the reasons you might expect. He’s trying to “extract a dark secret from her past.” Luke Evans stars along with Kelly Reilly; the rest of the cast includes Olivia Chenery, Jason Maza, and Noel Clarke (who also wrote the screenplay). This looks solid, though I’m wondering if the reveal at the end is really going to be that interesting or just forgettable. Take a peek below. ›››

First Trailer for Psychological Horror Film 'Tilt' About a Doc Filmmaker

    Tilt Trailer

“I don’t know, maybe it’s normal…? It’s not normal. I know it’s not normal…!” The Orchard has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Tilt, from Iranian-American director Kasra Farahani. This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, but like most Tribeca films, we’ve never heard of it before now. Tilt stars the young actor Joseph Cross as an unemployed documentary filmmaker whose behavior becomes increasingly erratic in the months after his wife becomes pregnant. The full cast includes Alexia Rasmussen, Jessy Hodges, C.S. Lee, and Kelvin Yu. This looks like a chilling psychological thriller, for sure. I’m not exactly sure how the pregnancy story plays into things, perhaps it is what sets off his insanity. ›››

  • The Parrs are Back in New Teaser Trailer for Pixar's 'The Incredibles 2'

The Parrs are Back in New Teaser Trailer for Pixar's 'The Incredibles 2'

    The Incredibles 2 Trailer

“Help me bring Supers back into the sunlight!” Disney-Pixar have released another teaser trailer for Brad Bird’s superhero sequel The Incredibles 2, which we’ve been waiting a long time to see. This teaser was debuted during the Olympics, along with a promo clip that integrated a few Olympics sports. The first teaser didn’t show much but this one actually has footage and gives us a nice introduction to the story. Brad Bird directs once again, and the plot synopsis only states that it’s about Bob navigating “the day-to-day heroics of ‘normal’ life”, allowing him time to bond with Jack-Jack, “whose superpowers are emerging—much to Dad’s surprise.” Craig T. Nelson is back to voice Bob, with Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sarah Vowell. There isn’t a lot here, but honestly I’m loving what we do get, feels like an authentic continuation. ›››

  • First Teaser Trailer for 'Uncle Drew' Basketball Movie with Kyrie Irving

First Teaser Trailer for 'Uncle Drew' Basketball Movie with Kyrie Irving

    Uncle Drew Teaser Trailer

“Respect your elders.” Lionsgate has debuted the teaser trailer for the full-length feature version of Uncle Drew, based on the Pepsi web series about the old timer basketball pro. NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving stars as Uncle Drew, with white hair and a white mustache, a masterful ball player who is recruited to return to the court and help a kid from Harlem win back his respect (and life savings). Lil Rel Howery also stars, with a totally rockin’ cast including Shaquille O’Neal, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, Chris Webber, Erica Ash, Lisa Leslie, with Tiffany Haddish and Nick Kroll. This basketball comedy concept, Uncle Drew, first started out as a “digital episodic series” made by Pepsi, that ran for five years, and is now being made into this movie. Most may remember the commercials that aired. Damn, does this movie look like fun. ›››
