  • 10 Cloverfield Lane Director Wants to Make a Video Game

10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg has already made a video game film, as he directed 2011’s Portal: No Escape short. Now, he says he wants to go to the other side and make a game.

In an interview with Glixel, the director revealed that he has in fact already started talking about “video game stuff with some people.” Don’t hold your breath for a Trachtenberg game, however, as it sounds like it could be a while before the title comes out, if it ever does.

“I have a feeling I’ll have to make a few more movies before I ever get a shot at making a game, but I’d love to make a game at some point,” he said.

Trachtenberg did not share any further details about who he’s in discussions with or what kind of game he wants to make. Another director, JJ Abrams (Star Wars, Star Trek), is working with Infinity Blade studio Chair Entertainment on an action-strategy game called Spyjinx for mobile and PC.

Glixel’s full interview with Trachtenberg is wide-ranging and incredibly fascinating. He also talks about wanting to make something in virtual reality (“I would love to crack that nut at some point soon”), directing an episode of Black Mirror, and how he played video games every night after shooting on 10 Cloverfield Lane wrapped up. He also revealed that he’s playing Heroes of the Storm, Overwatch, Dishonored 2, and The Last Guardian right now. He’s also a big-time World of Warcraft player.

“I bring the games with me wherever I go and it’s a big part of my creative life, for sure,” he said.

  • Breath of the Wild Producer Talks Possibility of Gender-Swapped Link, Nintendo Switch, and More

Breath of the Wild Producer Talks Possibility of Gender-Swapped Link, Nintendo Switch, and More

Eiji Aonuma has been with Nintendo ever since graduating in 1988, and has worked on the Zelda franchise from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time through to today.

Waypoint recently spoke with Aonuma about his work as producer on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, about everything from the fan-base, Switch battery life, and the size of the world, to the possibility of seeing a female Link in a future game in the franchise.

    No Caption Provided

“The opinions that resonate most with me, I definitely take them into account when the time comes to create the next Zelda,” Aonuma said to the question of how much attention the Zelda team pays to fan expectations. “If you listen to them all, you’ll end up with… Well, I’ve no idea what kind of game you’d end up with, but it probably wouldn’t be a very good one. So we have to follow our own vision, really, and not pay too much mind to speculation.”

What, then about the oft-rumored idea of a female Link? “…on the Wii U there’s already Hyrule Warriors. In that you’ve got Princess Zelda herself as a playable character, and a real assortment of playable characters including numerous female ones,” Aonuma said. “So, that title exists already. But in the future, regarding doing that sort of thing again, and changing what you expect from Zelda characters, I’d say yes, it’s a possibility.” This is somewhat counter to comments the Aonuma made in a previous interview with GameSpot during E3 2016, in which he said that while it was considered, the team “thought it best to come back to this [original] makeup.”

    No Caption Provided

Nintendo confirmed during its Nintendo Switch Presentation that while running Breath of Light, the Switch’s battery would last for around three hours. To that point, Aonuma confirmed that the game’s autosave system is frequent enough that players “shouldn’t lose too much progress. You’d only go back a short distance.”

To read the full interview, head over to Waypoint.

In other Breath of Light news, a list of differences between the Switch and WiiU versions has been confirmed, Aonuma confirmed in another interview that it’s possible we’ll see a second Legend of Zelda game on the Switch, and check out a battle with a Guardian.

  • CEO of Studio Behind Warcraft, Godzilla, The Dark Knight Series Resigns

Thomas Tull, the CEO of big-time movie studio Legendary Pictures, has resigned, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The studio produced some massive movies, including Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Batman series (2005’s Batman Begins was its first movie), as well as 300, The Hangover, Pacific Rim, Godzilla, and Warcraft. Additionally, Legendary recently won a reported bidding war to get the rights to Pokemon for a Detective Pikachu film.

Tull, who founded the company in 2000, sold Legendary to the Chinese company Wanda Group in 2016 for $3.5 billion. According to THR‘s sources, Wanda management “became frustrated with his management and recent projects such as The Great Wall and the currently shooting Pacific Rim 2.”

Wanda CEO Jack Gao will take over Legendary as its CEO.

“We are thankful to Thomas for his founding vision of Legendary as well as his commitment, leadership, and partnership this past year,” Gao said in a statement. “He will forever be part of the company’s already rich legacy and powerful DNA.

“As we move forward, Wanda aims to transform Legendary into a next generation studio of the future with a far-reaching creative and global platform. We look forward to working with the creative team to manage our already viable film slate with more to come in the near future.”

According to THR, Tull will now turn his attention to his investment firm, Tull Investment Group. The company has invested in technologies such as Oculus Rift and Magic Leap, among others.

Go to THR to get the full story.

Tull is also a minority owner of the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers. The Post-Gazette reports that Tull, a billionaire, recently purchased a 157-acre farm in Pennsylvania where he will grow lettuce, tomatoes, and apples; he also has dairy cows on his farm.

  • Xbox One Sales Reach 26 Million – Report

Xbox One Sales Reach 26 Million – Report

Microsoft no longer shares Xbox One sales figures, but a new report from research group SuperData claims that the console has reached 26 million units sold since launch in November 2013.

    No Caption Provided

As spotted by GamingBolt, this information was published in a report about the Nintendo Switch, addressing the entire video game market. It’s also claimed that the PS4 has an install base of nearly 55 million units; that’s slightly above the 53.4 million units that Sony officially disclosed earlier this month.

GameSpot has contacted Microsoft in an attempt to determine if the 26 million figure cited for Xbox One sales is accurate. We will report back with any information we receive from the company.

Instead of hard sales numbers, Microsoft instead talks about monthly active users, which counts the number of people logged into Xbox Live in the past 30 days across Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC. By Microsoft’s latest count, it had 47 million monthly active users.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer said it is riskier to divulge Xbox Live active user figures, as these can go down on a quarter-to-quarter basis, while console shipment numbers can only increase.

“If I sold a console two years ago and now it’s in a closet collecting dust, that’s not good for the gamer, that’s not good for the developers, and frankly, it’s not good for Microsoft,” Spencer said. “The nice thing about us selling consoles is your console install base will always go up. But that’s not really a reflection of how healthy your ecosystem is. We focus on the monthly active user base because we know those are gamers making a conscious choice to pick our content, our games, our platform, our service. We want to gauge our success on how happy and engaged those customers are. We need to keep them happy.”
