The Last of Us 2 Was Teased in September and Nobody Noticed

The Last of Us: Part II was the biggest surprise to come out of PSX 2016, but the sequel was actually teased back in September without anyone realising.

The poster below, released in a limited run as a celebration of Outbreak Day, shows Ellie’s arm with the same tattoo she has acquired by the time of The Last of Us: Part II, as seen in the reveal trailer. Outbreak Day, September 26, was the fictional day in The Last of Us’ world on which the Cordyceps fungus reached “critical mass.”

Naughty Dog has previous in teasing games: a newspaper headline seen in Uncharted 3 teased the existence of the original Last of Us.

In other Last of Us news, the first game’s director, Bruce Straley, is not returning to direct the sequel, while his replacement has asked fans to “trust” developer Naughty Dog with the follow up.

  • Terrifying New Resident Evil 7 Gameplay Videos Arrive

Capcom has premiered new Resident Evil 7 gameplay videos. The three-part series shows off a new look inside the game’s terrifying, derelict house and its residents, the Baker family.

A big part of the appeal here is the surprise factor, so we won’t spoil anything other than to say the videos are a treat and well worth a look. Part 1 can be seen in the embed above, while Parts 2 and 3 follow below.

In other news, an update for the game’s “Beginning Hour” demo, called “Midnight,” launched last weekend on PlayStation 4. It comes to Xbox One on December 9 and PC on December 19.

The Midnight update for the Resident Evil 7 is just the latest tweak for the Beginning Hour demo, as Capcom released a “Twilight” update for it earlier this year. The Midnight update goes even further, allowing players to “explore what lies beyond the mold-covered door, where terrifying growling noises emanate from….”

  • PS4 Update 4.07 Out Now, Here's What It Does (Not Much)

PS4 Update 4.07 Out Now, Here's What It Does (Not Much)

A new PlayStation 4 system update has arrived, but don’t expect any new features.

Like others before it, 4.07 is focused on improving the quality of the PS4’s system performance. The one-line patch notes state: “This system software update improves the quality of the system performance.” It’s a relatively small patch, coming in at 312.3 MB, according to DualShockers.

    No Caption Provided

The wording of the 4.07 patch is identical to that of the previous 4.06 and 4.05 patches.

Sony (and Microsoft for its part) do not historically launch major, feature-rich system updates during the holiday months. The PS4’s last significant update, 4.00, came out in September.

It introduced folders for managing games and apps, while some menus were also redesigned. PS4 4.00 also added HDR support for all PS4s. You can see everything new and changed for PS4 4.00 in GameSpot’s previous report.

In other PS4 news, Sony announced this week that the console has crossed 50 million sales worldwide and that this year’s Black Friday week was the best in the history of PlayStation for sales.

  • Elite: Dangerous Coming to PS4 With PS4 Pro Support in 2017

Following its launch on PC and Xbox One, space game Elite: Dangerous is headed to PlayStation 4 and it will have PS4 Pro support.

Frontier Developments said today that the game will launch sometime between April and June in 2017. A new trailer has also been released:

PS4-specific features include touchpad functionality and optional, motion-based “headlook” controls via the DualShock 4 controller. Additionally, the PS4 version of Elite: Dangerous lets you designate four points on the touchpad as hotkeys, Frontier said in its announcement.

As for the PS4 Pro improvements, Frontier said only that people on that system will “further benefit from enhanced performance throughout” the game.

“We’re thrilled to bring Elite: Dangerous to PlayStation 4,” Frontier CEO and Elite co-creator David Braben said in a statement. “Elite Dangerous is unlike any other space game, with a rich multiplayer or single-player space, a true-to-life galaxy including our own entire night sky, real physics, unique ship handling characteristics, and a player-driven narrative that’s really heating up. The galaxy has been stable for centuries, but all that is about to change. PlayStation 4 players will be joining our galaxy at a very exciting time.”

Elite: Dangerous launched for PC in 2014 and came to Xbox One in 2015. For more, check out GameSpot’s Elite: Dangerous review.

  • Star Trek's Simon Pegg Hints That He Might Writing the Next Movie

Star Trek's Simon Pegg Hints That He Might Writing the Next Movie

Although this year’s Star Trek Beyond was not quite the box office smash of its two predecessors, a fourth movie in the rebooted sci-fi franchise is on the way. A new photo tweeted by Beyond co-writer and actor Simon Pegg suggests that work may have begun on the film’s script. Check it out below:

    No Caption Provided

The image show Pegg alongside his Beyond co-writer Doug Jung, with the robotic figure of JJ Abrams’ production company Bad Robot sitting on the desk too. Bad Robot has produced all three movies in the series so far.

Paramount announced plans for Star Trek 4 in July, revealing that Thor star Chris Hemsworth would return to the series. Hemsworth had a small role in 2009’s Star Trek as Kirk’s father, and a press release at the time stated: “In the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.”

However, this announcement was made before Star Trek Beyond hit theaters. Although the film was successful, its $343 million worldwide gross was considerably less than either Star Trek or 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness.

Abrams himself hinted that a fourth movie might depend on the performance of Beyond. “One of the reasons that I’m hoping [Beyond] does well is so that we can, without question, get that movie made,” Abrams told Entertainment Weekly.

While no release date has been announced for the next Star Trek movie, it does at least looks like it still happening.

  • The Last Guardian: Picking Up Trico's Poop Looks Like No Fun at All

Sony has released a silly commercial for The Last Guardian that shows what it might be like to have the game’s bird-dog-cat-griffin creature at home as a pet. You can probably imagine how this plays out.

The woman in the “Living With Trico” video remarks that she wanted a cat, a dog, or a bird as a pet, but went with Trico in the end because it’s a combination of the three. Good idea? Maybe not. As you’ll see, Trico is simply too large for a household life. And cleaning up after it is a pain as well.

The Last Guardian launched this week on PlayStation 4 after years and years of development and fears that it might have been canceled.

In a note, director Fumito Ueda acknowledged the “twists and turns” of The Last Guardian’s development. He also remarked that making the game “took longer than anyone expected.”

GameSpot’s The Last Guardian review scored it a 9/10.

“It isn’t clear whether or not The Last Guardian means to be frustrating at times–if it’s a concerted effort to test your patience for a lovable-yet-stubborn creature,” reviewer Peter Brown said. “Your affection for Trico and sympathy for both characters blossom nonetheless, culminating in an enrapturing series of revelations that cements your attachment to their personalities. Trico is the undeniable star of the show, exhibiting believable physicality and emotional range, but the boy is a valuable lesson in how to be patient and resilient when faced with unforeseen challenges.”

  • Nintendo Switch Will Play GameCube Games – Report

Another cool feature for the Nintendo Switch has apparently been revealed. Citing three separate sources, Eurogamer reports today that the console can play GameCube games through its Virtual Console program. Eurogamer has accurately reported on unannounced Switch features in the past.

Three Nintendo-published GameCube games are reportedly in the pipeline. Unsurprisingly, they are some of the console’s best games: Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Eurogamer reports that the GameCube’s Animal Crossing is being tested, too.

That the Switch will play GameCube games through the VC is something of a big move, as the Wii U does not play games from that console. Additionally, it’s claimed that there will be an upgrade program where people who bought GameCube games via the VC on an older console can “upgrade” them to the new hardware for a small price.

Eurogamer also reports that Nintendo is looking to add support for the Wii U’s GameCube controller adapter, though the company is reportedly not committed to this yet.

Nintendo declined to comment when approached by Eurogamer. Read their full report here.

The company has said not to expect any more news about the Switch until January 2017, when the company will reveal the console’s price, specs, and launch lineup at an event. The console goes on sale in March 2017.

  • Female-Led Ocean's 8 To Feature Homeland Star as Villain – Report

Female-Led Ocean's 8 To Feature Homeland Star as Villain – Report

Ocean’s Eight is the upcoming spinoff from the popular Ocean’s series, featuring an all-female criminal crew. It has now been reported that Homeland star Damian Lewis is set to play the movie’s villain.

    No Caption Provided

According to The Wrap, Lewis is in “final negotiations” to portray the film’s main bad guy. Lewis is best known for his Golden Globe-winning part in the first two seasons of Homeland, as well as his ongoing role in Billions and the acclaimed war drama Band of Brothers.

Ocean’s Eight stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, and Sarah Paulson. It is directed by The Hunger Games‘ Gary Ross, and produced by Steven Soderbergh, who helmed the original Oceans trilogy. The film is slated to open on June 8, 2018.

Last month, Matt Damon, one of the stars of Soderbergh’s movies, confirmed that he will appear in the new film, presumably reprising his role as Linus Caldwell. “I’m doing a little bit in the movie,” he told ET. “The cast is phenomenal, and I’m excited to see what those women do with it. It’s going to be fun.”

Ocean’s Eleven earned $450 million worldwide in 2001. While the two sequels weren’t quite as successful, they all proved to be considerable box office hits, helping the franchise reach more than $1.1 billion at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo.
