Official Trailer for David Mackenzie's 'Outlaw King' Starring Chris Pine

    Outlaw King Trailer

“I serve Brother Bruce!” Netflix has launched the first official trailer for Outlaw King, the latest film from acclaimed Scottish filmmaker David Mackenzie (of Hallam Foe, Perfect Sense, Starred Up, Hell or High Water). This is premiering as the opening night film at the Toronto Film Festival in just a few weeks, and they’re starting up the marketing machine a bit early with this awesome first trailer. The film tells a “David v. Goliath story” of how the great 14th Century Scottish “Outlaw King’” Robert The Bruce used cunning and bravery to defeat and repel the much larger and better equipped occupying English army. Filmed entirely in Scotland, Outlaw King reunites Mackenzie with star Chris Pine, who plays Robert the Bruce. The film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Florence Pugh, Billy Howle, Tony Curran, Stephen Dillane, James Cosmo, and Sam Spruell. I wouldn’t expect anything less from Mackenzie, but hot damn this looks great. ›››

    Modest Heroes Trailers

“Shun adores baseball. Only eggs defeat him.” Here we go! Japanese animation house Studio Ponoc has debuted three 30-second individual trailers for their new short films as part of their first Anthology feature. These short films will be released in Japan later this month together in one extended feature, Ponoc’s latest offering since Mary and the Witch’s Flower. This new series is titled “Ponoc Short Films Theatre”, and this first set is titled Modest Heroes. Ponoc recruited three of Ghibli’s finest veteran animators to make these three short films – Kanini & Kanino directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, Life Ain’t Gonna Lose (aka Samurai Egg) directed by Yoshiyuki Momose, and Invisible directed by Akihiko Yamashita. The trailers finally give us a better glimpse at the stories & characters in these shorts, and I’m still crazy excited to watch them. The Invisible short looks like the best, in my opinion, but they all have some serious charm. ›››

  • Two Brothers Spot UFOs in First Trailer for Indie Sci-Fi 'Watch the Sky'

Two Brothers Spot UFOs in First Trailer for Indie Sci-Fi 'Watch the Sky'

    Watch the Sky Trailer

“I don’t want the whole town getting into a panic over nothin’.” Breaking Glass Pictures has debuted an official trailer for the indie sci-fi film Watch the Sky, which will be going straight to VOD coming up next week. Even though this isn’t that impressive, we still like featuring cool indie films from up-and-coming filmmakers anyway. Watch the Sky is about two brothers who send a balloon into the sky in hopes of getting some of their own video footage of space. They end up getting more than they bargained for when they discover UFOs. The film features Renée O’Connor, Jed Sura, Luke Albright, Amie Farrell, Miracle Laurie, Carol Mansell, and introducing Karson Kern and Miles Muir. This looks super low budget, but I appreciate that they actually show the aliens in daylight (and not only at night). Might be a cool watch. ›››

  • Watch: Engaging Sci-Fi Short Film 'Kept' Questions Recording Dreams

Watch: Engaging Sci-Fi Short Film 'Kept' Questions Recording Dreams

    Kept Short Film

“It’s the intensity; it’s the purity of what you are seeing. No conscious interventions.” Now this is the kind of sci-fi I’m hoping to discover. Kept is a sci-fi short made by Colombian filmmaker Jaime D. González. After first playing at a few film festivals last year, the short is now online in full for viewing for free. Set in the near future when scientists have discovered a way to record dreams, those with ulterior motives waste no time exploiting those with the most powerful dreams. Starring Jairo Camargo & Manuel Sarmiento. This is much more of a thought-provoking, “Black Mirror”-esque sci-fi than anything with big action. It goes to some dark places, but I appreciate how far they take the dream recording concept. I want to watch more. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Documentary 'Hal' About the Filmmaker Hal Ashby

Official Trailer for Documentary 'Hal' About the Filmmaker Hal Ashby

    Hal Documentary Trailer

“He’d smoke some pot, and he would work all night.” Oscilloscope Labs has unveiled an official full-length trailer for a documentary titled Hal, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Amy Scott’s first feature doc is about the iconic director Hal Ashby, “the ’70s grooviest master filmmaker”, who directed hit films like Harold and Maude, Being There, The Last Detail, Shampoo, and Coming Home. The film is made up of rare archival materials, interviews, personal letters, and audio recordings. And examines Hel’s clash with Hollywood: “His uncompromising nature pitted him against studio meddling, particularly in the 1980s, when a string of flops tarnished his legacy, but Scott conjures the special quality Ashby’s films possess—an elusive blend of honesty, irreverence, humor, and humanity.” This looks so groovy & inspiring. ›››

  • New Trailer for 'The Bray Road Beast' Doc About Werewolves in the US

New Trailer for 'The Bray Road Beast' Doc About Werewolves in the US

The Beast of Bray Road Trailer

“Every lore or myth has some truth to it…” Small Town Monsters has debuted the new official trailer for a documentary film titled The Bray Road Beast, about werewolf sightings in Wisconsin. This is the latest film made by Ohio-based filmmaker Seth Breedlove, and his Small Town Monsters label: “A production company dedicated to documenting unusual events around the country.” So the story goes – in the early 90s, a rural Wisconsin community called Elkhorn was at the center of a series of real-life werewolf sightings. In their seventh film (and third feature-length documentary), Small Town Monsters takes you on an in-depth exploration of the “dogman” phenomenon. This seems like a must-see doc for horror fans and conspiracy nuts, perhaps because it makes it look like this could all be real. Werewolves really do exist! Right? Right!? ›››

  • Tiffany Haddish in Teaser Trailer for Thanksgiving Comedy 'The Oath'

Tiffany Haddish in Teaser Trailer for Thanksgiving Comedy 'The Oath'

    The Oath Teaser Trailer

“Give me the strength to get through the next three days, please.” Roadside Attractions has debuted the first teaser trailer for a holiday-themed, wild indie comedy titled The Oath, the feature directorial debut of actor-writer-comedian Ike Barinholtz. Barinholtz also stars in this as Chris, married to a woman named Kai, as played by Tiffany Haddish. The film is set around Thanksgiving time and is about a controversial White House policy that turns family member against family member. Described as a “savagely funny dark comedy about surviving life and Thanksgiving in the age of political tribalism.” Bring it on. The cast includes Billy Magnussen, John Cho, Meredith Hagner, Carrie Brownstein, Nora Dunn, Jon Barinholtz, Chris Ellis, and Priah Ferguson. This looks hilarious! I’m anxious to see more, it’s totally uncomfortable yet also the kind of comedy we really need right now. Haddish & Barinholtz look pretty much perfect in this. ›››

Aubrey Plaza in Wacky Trailer for 'An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn'

An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn Trailer

“Although I don’t know quite what’s going on, I’m having a great time, Lulu.” Universal + Content Group have unveiled the first official trailer for a bizarre, funky, indie comedy titled An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, then also played at the Rotterdam and Galway Film Festivals. This is the second film by Jim Hosking and the follow-up to his uber-weird The Greasy Strangler from a few years ago. Aubrey Plaza stars as Lulu Danger, whose unsatisfying marriage takes a turn for the worse when a mysterious man from her past comes to town to perform an event called “An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn; For One Magical Night Only.” The eccentric cast includes Jemaine Clement, Emile Hirsch, Craig Robinson, Matt Berry, Maria Bamford, Sky Elobar, and Jacob Wysocki. This is all just way too weird for me, but I do appreciate the unabashed originality in here. ›››

  • A Spooky International Trailer for 'Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween'

A Spooky International Trailer for 'Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween'

    Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween

“It’s time to make Halloween last forever!” Sony Pictures has released an alternate international trailer for horror comedy sequel Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, based on R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps book series. This is the follow-up to the 2015 live-action Goosebumps movie that didn’t get great reviews, and it looks just as bad. Set in the small town of Wardenclyffe on Halloween Night, two boys unknowingly release Slappy, who plans to cause a Halloween Apocalypse with the help of his monster allies. The ensemble cast of Goosebumps 2 includes Ken Jeong, Wendi Mclendon-Covey, Chris Parnell, Madison Iseman, Ben O’Brien, Caleel Harris, Jeremy Ray Taylor, though no Jack Black this time. While this does look a bit better than the first trailer, there’s not really much to see in here aside from some CG monsters. Move along. ›››

Official Trailer for 'Kusama – Infinity' Doc About Artist Yayoi Kusama

    Kusama - Infinity Trailer

“I come up with new ideas so quickly. My canvas can’t keep up with me.” Magnolia Pictures has debuted the first official trailer for Heather Lenz’s fascinating artist documentary Kusama – Infinity, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Lenz’s Kusama – Infinity profiles world-renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, now 89 years old and still creating. The film “traces Kusama’s trajectory from a conservative upbringing in Japan to battling sexism and racism in 1960s NYC to her unstoppable rise to international fame.” She has re-established her prominence with the highly successful “Infinity Room” and other recent art projects and global exhibitions. I saw this at Sundance and it’s a wonderful, intriguing, inspiring doc film about a truly masterful artist, spanning her entire life and career. Highly recommended. ›››
