Emotional Trailer for Pelican Rescue Movie 'Storm Boy' from Australia

    Storm Boy Trailer

“Sometimes you’ve gotta do what you know is right, even if they’re gonna hate you for it.” Sony Pictures Australia has debuted the first full trailer for Storm Boy, a “beautiful and contemporary retelling of Colin Thiele’s classic Australian tale.” The story is about a boy who grew up on uninhabited coastline of Southern Australia, where he rescues and raises an orphaned pelican, named Mr. Percival. This is yet another one of those stories told from adulthood looking back at childhood. “Their remarkable adventures and very special bond has a profound effect on all their lives.” Starring Geoffrey Rush, Jai Courtney, Trevor Jamieson, Morgana Davies, and introducing Finn Little as “Storm Boy”. This tale was adapted once before into a film in 1976, but I don’t think it connected with many audiences outside of Australia. Now we have another cinematic take on this and it looks like an inspiring, heartwarming adventure for the whole world to enjoy. ›››

  • First Trailer for Robot Friend Animated Movie 'Next Gen' from Netflix

First Trailer for Robot Friend Animated Movie 'Next Gen' from Netflix

    Next Gen Trailer

“There’s way too much injustice in the world… together we can fix it!” Netflix has debuted an official trailer for an animated sci-fi adventure comedy titled Next Gen, the first feature film made by filmmakers Kevin Adams & Joe Ksander. Next Gen is about how a friendship with a top-secret robot turns a lonely girl’s life into a thrilling adventure as they take on bullies, evil bots, and a scheming madman. Sounds like a good time. Featuring Charlyne Yi as the voice of Mai, along with the voices of John Krasinski, David Cross, Michael Peña, Jason Sudeikis, and Constance Wu. I wasn’t expecting much out of this, but dang, this really looks great. The animation is excellent, and the story looks cliche but very enjoyable to watch anyway. ›››

Watch: Male Stripper Short 'Angel of Anywhere' by James Kicklighter

    Angel of Anywhere Short Film

“I am so not this girl, I never do this.” Don’t be turned off by the headline, this is a very impressive dramatic short film. Angel of Anywhere is an award-winning short directed by James Kicklighter that has been playing at festivals this year. The story is about an empathetic stripper who chats with his clients and helps them work through their problems. It goes to some very deep, personal places, with a very intelligent script. Angel of Anywhere stars Briana Evigan as Michelle, Ser’Darius Blain as Brian, David A. Gregory as D.C., plus Nihan Gur, Adam Carr, Krystal Conway, and Axel Roldos. It’s always great to see a story that challenges us to rethink our initial judgments, and listen more to each other. Definitely worth a watch. ›››

  • Maika Monroe in Official Trailer for Indie Dramedy 'After Everything'

Maika Monroe in Official Trailer for Indie Dramedy 'After Everything'

    After Everything Trailer

“I just want us to be on the same team” Good Deed Ent. has released an official trailer for an indie dramedy titled After Everything, which first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. The film is about two people who fall in love, Mia and Elliot, but must deal with the challenges of life when Elliot is diagnosed with cancer. Maika Monroe and Jeremy Allen White star as the couple, and the cast includes Marisa Tomei, Gina Gershon, Olivia Luccardi, Dean Winters, Joe Keery, and Sasha Lane. This looks like an emotional, enriching story of love, and how it keeps these two together and happy even against all odds. I like that this has comedy and angst, and isn’t a sad drama, because this kind of story needs levity. ›››

  • First Trailer for 'Green Book' with Viggo Mortensen & Mahershala Ali

First Trailer for 'Green Book' with Viggo Mortensen & Mahershala Ali

    Green Book Trailer

“You never win with violence. You only win when you maintain your dignity.” Universal has debuted an excellent first trailer for Green Book, an Amblin production directed by Peter Farrelly, making his solo directorial debut (with a drama) after directing numerous hit comedies with his brother Bobby. Green Book is about a bouncer at a New York nightclub who takes on a job as a pianist’s chauffeur during a tour in the Deep South in the 1960s. The title is a reference to the “Negro Motorist Green Book“, an annual guidebook for African-American roadtrippers, commonly referred to simply as the Green Book. Mahershala Ali stars as Don Shirley, with Viggo Mortensen as Tony Lip, and the cast includes Linda Cardellini, Don Stark, P.J. Byrne, Brian Stepanek, Sebastian Maniscalco, and Iqbal Theba. This looks fantastic, and I’m looking forward to seeing it mostly for Mortensen and Ali’s relationship in here. Two of my favorite actors. ›››

  • Taraji P. Henson in First Trailer for Adam Shankman's 'What Men Want'

Taraji P. Henson in First Trailer for Adam Shankman's 'What Men Want'

    What Men Want Trailer

“I’m so sick of this boys club!” Paramount Pictures has debuted the first full trailer for a funky workplace comedy titled What Men Want, starring the Oscar-nominated Taraji P. Henson as a successful sports agent. The movie is the latest directed by Adam Shankman (The Wedding Planner, Bringing Down the House, Hairspray, Bedtime Stories, and Rock of Ages) and comes from a story written by Nancy Meyers (Father of the Bride, Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday, The Intern). The movie features a twist where she suddenly gains the ability to hear men’s thoughts, which gives her an edge on signing the next basketball superstar. The cast includes Aldis Hodge, Richard Roundtree, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Tracy Morgan. I will say this actually looks quite funny despite being very cheesy, but I’m down to give it a shot. ›››

  • A24's Full-Length Trailer for Gaspar Noé's Dance Horror Film 'Climax'

A24's Full-Length Trailer for Gaspar Noé's Dance Horror Film 'Climax'

    Climax Trailer

“Dance is everything. It’s all I have.” A24 has unveiled an energetic, mesmerizing official trailer for the film Climax, the latest feature from controversial, visionary, wacky French filmmaker Gaspar Noé (of I Stand Alone, Irreversible, Enter the Void, Love). This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year to a whole bunch of buzz, with early reviews ranging from terrible to absolutely amazing, most of them at least praising the impressive dance choreography featured throughout (read my review here). Climax is about a troupe of dancers locked up in a cabin finishing rehearsal performances, who start to lose their mind once the after party begins. Starring Sofia Boutella and a cast of professional dancers, “Climax is Noé’s most brazen and visionary statement yet.” This is such a trippy, flashy trailer for this super artsy film. Turn it up. ›››

  • Watch: Superb 'Cloverfield'-Inspired Sci-Fi Action Short Film 'Megan'

Watch: Superb 'Cloverfield'-Inspired Sci-Fi Action Short Film 'Megan'

    Megan Short Film

“The old man wasn’t that crazy after all, was he?” Time to dip our toes back into the Cloverfield universe. Megan is an impressive “proof-of-concept” 5-min sci-fi short film by a Polish VFX designer / filmmaker named Greg Strasz. It’s directly inspired by Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane and the ARG for these and everything else (though not The Cloverfield Paradox, thankfully, since that film sucks). This also reminds me a bit of Battle Los Angeles, but I better not say that. Megan stars Matilda Lutz as Megan, along with Garret T. Sato, Ralf Moeller, Yuki Sakamoto, TJ Misawa, Edwin Modlin II, Paolo Bernardini, and a few others. This is very slick and well-made, I just wish there was more to it, as it ends very abruptly. ›››

Trailer for 'City of Joy' Documentary About a Congo Women's Center

    City of Joy Trailer

“We have to tell the truth about what has happened to us.” Netflix has debuted a new trailer for an indie documentary titled City of Joy, which will be available for streaming starting in September. In 2011, the “City of Joy” opened its doors in Eastern Congo with the goal of building a peaceful and transformational community for women survivors of violence. The film follows the first class of students at this remarkable leadership center in a place often referred to as “the worst place in the world to be a woman.” These women have been through unspeakable violence spurred on by a 20 year war driven by colonialism and greed. They band together with the three founders of this center: Dr. Denis Mukwege, radical playwright and activist Eve Ensler (“The Vagina Monolgoues”) and human rights activist, Christine Schuler-Deschryver, to find a way to create meaning in their lives even when all that was meaningful to them has been stripped away. Full Trailer for 'Free Solo' Documentary About El Capitan Free Climber

    Free Solo Doc Trailer

“If you’re pushing the edge, eventually you find the edge.” Yeah, this looks awesome. National Geographic Documentary Films has unveiled the first, full-length official trailer for a documentary titled Free Solo, following rock climber Alex Honnold as he becomes the first person to ever “free solo” climb Yosemite’s 3,000 ft high El Capitan Wall. With no ropes or safety gear, he completed arguably the greatest feat in rock climbing history in June of 2017. This documentary captures his climb and the hype surrounding it, giving us an edge-of-the-seat, mind-blowing glimpse at the incredible talent and strength involved in pulling this off. The film is made by the filmmakers behind the acclaimed mountain climbing doc Meru, and features some stunning footage. As a big fan and life-long supporter of extreme sports, I really can’t wait to see this. ›››
