Watch: Captivating Sci-Fi Short 'Instant' Produced by Roddenberry Ent.

    Instant Short Film

“I want to see the future…” “What’s in the future…?” Another compelling short film to watch, with a bit of a sci-fi twist. Instant is a short film directed by Alex Albrecht, produced by Roddenberry Entertainment, lead by Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, who is the son of legendary Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett. After a desperate criminal takes a bar hostage, six people must face their demons – past and present – in order to survive. But one of them is keeping a big secret that could change everything in an instant. The film stars Tyler Hilton, Manu Intiraymi, Phil Morris, Emily Chang, Tony Janning, and Tara Perry. This short has a few strong performances, working with an intriguing script that explores some engaging ideas. I wish this was a bit shorter, might be more effective, but it’s still a good short. Enjoy. ›››

Rojo is the latest film from Argentinian filmmaker Benjamín Naishtat, set in the mid-1970s (when mustaches were still a big thing) following a successful lawyer with a comfortable life in a small town. A strange man arrives and starts insulting him, but the locals defend him and throw him out. Later that night the lawyer takes a path of no return involving death, secrets and silences. Starring Dario Grandinetti, Andrea Frigerio, Alfredo Castro, and Diego Cremonesi. TIFF says that Naishtat “deliberately builds a quiet mood of foreboding and impeding doom through a carefully constructed, almost hypnotic narrative.” View some footage below. ›››

“I wanted my life to have meaning.” HBO has debuted the full trailer for Susan Lacy’s documentary Jane Fonda in Five Acts, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year, and stopped by the Cannes, Biografilm, and Traverse City Film Festivals as well. As the title (sort of) explains, the documentary is a look at the life, work, activism, and controversies of actress & fitness tycoon, Jane Fonda. She has two Oscars, four Golden Globes, and many many other major accolades to her name. Fonda has “lived a life marked by controversy, tragedy and transformation, and she’s done it all in the public eye.” And she’s still going strong at 80 years old. It’s always nice to enjoy a good doc about someone this talented and outspoken, so jump in. ›››

  • New Trailer for Paranoia Horror 'Retina' About Side Effects Gone Awry

New Trailer for Paranoia Horror 'Retina' About Side Effects Gone Awry

    Retina Trailer

“Are there any side effects I should know about?” Screen Media Films has debuted an official trailer for a sci-fi horror thriller titled Retina, from filmmaker Carlos Ferrer (Scallop Pond). The film is about a woman who participates in a medical study, but starts to experience nightmares and unusual side effects. One early review calls it a “low-budget but polished little thriller that invokes the spirit of 70s paranoia thrillers like The Parallax View or The Conversation and 90s indie equivalents like Darren Aronofsky’s Pi.” Retina stars Lindsay Goranson as April, with Gary Swanson, Ian Temple, Ron Haxton, and Jamie Fedorko. The footage doesn’t look that impressive and the poster is way more explosive than the trailer. Take a look. ›››

  • Full Trailer for New 'King Lear' Starring Anthony Hopkins as King Lear

Full Trailer for New 'King Lear' Starring Anthony Hopkins as King Lear

    King Lear Trailer

“Better thou hadst not been born… than not t’ have pleased me better.” Screen Media Films has debuted an official US trailer for the latest Shakespeare adaptation of King Lear, which already opened in UK cinemas in May. This new King Lear, set in a “fictional” present day, stars Sir Anthony Hopkins as the iconic King Lear, deciding to divide his kingdom among his three daughters according to their affection for him. The full cast includes Jim Broadbent, Emily Watson, Florence Pugh, Jim Carter, Tobias Menzies, John Macmillan, Anthony Calf, Simon Manyonda, Chukwudi Iwuji, and the great Emma Thompson. There’s always room for more cinematic Shakespeare adaptations, right? Though this one looks very stagey, and very made-for-TV, which might explain why it didn’t show up at any film festivals or otherwise. Enjoy. ›››

  • Eve Hewson & Avan Jogia in Official Trailer for Romance 'Paper Year'

Eve Hewson & Avan Jogia in Official Trailer for Romance 'Paper Year'

    Paper Year Trailer

“You ever feel like sometimes everything is just… hard.” The Orchard has debuted the official trailer for an emotional, indie romantic drama titled Paper Year, from first-time filmmaker Rebecca Addelman, a TV writer making a leap into feature films. The title is a reference to the first year of marriage between two young lovers. Both still in their early twenties, the newlywed couple face the challenges of growing up head-on, together and individually, as they stumble through maturation into adulthood during the first year of marriage. Eve Hewson and Avan Jogia star, along with Hamish Linklater, Andie MacDowell, and Andrew Markowiak. This looks super cliche but adorable, as all of these young romance films usually do. ›››

  • Bloody New Red Band Trailer for A24's Pizza Delivery Horror 'Slice'

Bloody New Red Band Trailer for A24's Pizza Delivery Horror 'Slice'

    Slice Trailer

“It all started when the werewolf came back to town…” A24 has delivered a new full-length red bad trailer for their funky new horror film Slice, directed by Austin Vesely, and starring Chance The Rapper (aka Chance Bennett) as a pizza delivery guy who gets into some serious shit. As they reveal in this trailer, the more specific plot involves murders: “When a pizza delivery driver is murdered on the job, the city searches for someone to blame: ghosts? drug dealers? a disgraced werewolf?” The cast includes Zazie Beetz, Rae Gray, Katherine Cunningham, Marilyn Dodds Frank, Will Brill, Y’lan Noel, Hannibal Buress, and Paul Scheer. This looks way more bloody and violent and crazy and cool and wicked fun than I was expecting, which is good because it has been such a long wait to finally see more. We’ve been posting teasers since last year! But this trailer seems to providee some hope that maybe it will be out soon. Fire it up below. ›››

  • Scaling El Cap – Full Trailer for Climbing Documentary 'The Dawn Wall'

Scaling El Cap – Full Trailer for Climbing Documentary 'The Dawn Wall'

    The Dawn Wall Trailer

“Nothing left to do but just take a couple deep breaths.” Red Bull Media + The Orchard have revealed the full-length trailer for an extreme sports documentary titled The Dawn Wall, about die-hard adventure junkies and experienced rock climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson, specifically their attempt to climb the “Dawn Wall” – a seemingly impossible 3,000 foot rock face on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. This doc is first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, and will be in theaters this September. Some of you may remember the media frenzy this big climb caused in the summer of 2015, because Caldwell and Jorgeson spent weeks living on the rock face trying to complete the epic climb. Making it even more of a challenge, Jorgeson lost index finger in an accident in Kyrgyzstan, but he continued to climb and get even stronger, attempting this challenge as a way to prove he can still achieve anything. Another El Cap climbing doc to compliment Free Solo, which is also debuting this year. I definitely want to see both of these films. ›››
