Bella Thorne & Jessie T. Usher in Trailer for Uber Horror Thriller 'Ride'

    Ride Trailer

“Sometimes when you trust your impulses, incredible things can happen.” RLJE Films has released an official trailer for a horror thriller titled Ride, which is indeed a horror movie about ride-sharing apps (like Uber and Lyft). I knew they’d make one of these films one day, and here it is, and it looks as bad as I thought it would. Just so cheesy and unnecessary and an exaggeration of the horror of car services, because why not, let’s scare everyone and make them even more paranoid. Ride is described as a “cautionary tale aimed at a technology-obsessed society.” Ugh, of course it is. When James, an Uber driver, and his passenger, Jessica, pick up the charismatic but manipulative Bruno, a normal night out in LA becomes a psychological war for survival. Starring Jessie T. Usher, Bella Thorne, and Will Brill. This film looks so excruciatingly bad. ›››

First Trailer for Taiwanese Sci-Fi Film 'Cities of Last Things' from TIFF

    Cities of Last Things Trailer

“Let’s run away together.” An official festival trailer has arrived for a sci-fi drama titled Cities of Last Things, a Taiwanese production. It sounds intriguing and looks crazy cool. This is a story about a common man who has extraordinary events in his mundane life. The film depicts the protagonist’s turns of events in three eras, three seasons, three nights, in the same city, as told with reverse chronology. It just premiered at TIFF this month, though not too many reviews are around yet. “Spanning generations, Cities of Last Things builds a seering, non-preachy portrait of societal and political change through the lens of an emotional drama. Reminiscent of the early work of Wong Kar-wai, it finds its heartbeat in the pulse-pounding rhythm of the underbelly of the unnamed city.” Starring Jack Kao, Li Hong-Chi, Louise Grinberg, Ding Ning, Stone, Huang Lu, Liu Rui-Chi, Hsin Yin, Liu Juei-Chi, and Shin Yin. You might want to take a look. ›››

TIFF 2018: 'The Biggest Little Farm' is The Most Adorable Documentary

    The Biggest Little Farm Review

This documentary is currently the one film that has made me tear up the most this year so far. The Biggest Little Farm is a tiny little documentary that is not so tiny in reality. The film profiles the first seven years of a traditional farm that a couple decided to start in Southern California, called Apricot Lane Farms. I had no idea what I was getting into with this film, but from the first few minutes I knew I would love it. And it just kept getting more and more amazing. The film opens with the line “it all started because of a promise we made to a dog.” Not just any dog, but a dog they saved and adopted, with the most stunning eyes. They promised Todd they would never leave him, but after the neighbors complained about his barking, they had to move. So they decided to move out, quit their jobs, and attempt to grow and maintain a biodynamic farm. ›››

  • International Trailer for Nadine Labaki's Award-Winning 'Capernaum'

International Trailer for Nadine Labaki's Award-Winning 'Capernaum'

    Capernaum Trailer

This is a story you’ve never seen before. An international trailer has debuted for the film Capernaum, also known as Capharnaüm, from Lebanon. Directed by actress-filmmaker Nadine Labaki, the film premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival (and won the Jury Prize there), and has also played at the New Horizons, Melbourne, Sarajevo, and Toronto Film Festivals, with a stop at the London Film Festival next. Capernaum takes place on the streets of Beirut, following a 12-year-old boy who decides to sue his parents for bringing him into the world. We follow him as he escapes and runs around, trying to survive by begging and stealing, showing us a disheartening, depressing side of the world we all tend to ignore. This was one of the best films I saw at Cannes this year, and I’ve been raving about it ever since the premiere. It’s an important film to see. ›››

  • TIFF 2018: Barry Jenkins' Film 'If Beale Street Could Talk' is Pure Bliss

TIFF 2018: Barry Jenkins' Film 'If Beale Street Could Talk' is Pure Bliss

If Beale Street Could Talk Review

Lord Almighty, Barry Jenkins is a master. If Beale Street Could Talk is the third film written & directed by filmmaker Barry Jenkins (following Medicine for Melancholy and Moonlight previously), this time he’s loosely adapting James Baldwin’s 1974 novel of the same name. This film is pure bliss. It is love, it’s the feeling and emotions and actions of love turned into celluloid and projected in front of our very eyes for us to fall in love with in turn. It’s a gorgeous film, visually and emotionally, and I didn’t want it to end. That’s the best thing about it – it’s a slice of life taking us back to the 70s, but giving us a love story so rich and so real, that you want to keep following them wherever they may go. Much like Linklater’s Before series, the love on display here is something we can all be inspired by – no matter your race or sexuality or upbringing. ›››

  • Teaser Trailer for Rupert Wyatt's Sci-Fi 'Captive State' Set in Chicago

Teaser Trailer for Rupert Wyatt's Sci-Fi 'Captive State' Set in Chicago

    Captive State Trailer

“Please rise to greet our legislature!” Focus Features has launched the first teaser trailer for an original sci-fi thriller titled Captive State, the latest from director Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Gambler). The film is set in Chicago and takes place nearly a decade after an occupation by an extra-terrestrial force. The movie explores the lives on both sides of the conflict – the collaborators and dissidents. It seems to be another fascinating look at the societal divide in America, but framed around the sci-fi concept of alien overlords – a bit like District 9, but set in Chicago. Captive State stars Vera Farmiga, Madeline Brewer, John Goodman, Alan Ruck, Kevin J. O’Connor, James Ransone, Jonathan Majors, D.B. Sweeney, Ashton Sanders, Kevin Dunn, Ta’Rhonda Jones, with Kiki Layne (from If Beale Street Could Talk) and Machine Gun Kelly. I’ve been waiting to see something from this, and this is a clever introduction. I wish we could see more of these aliens, but I like that this is a true tease. ›››

First International Trailer for 'Yuli' Biopic About Cuban Ballet Prodigy

    Yuli Trailer

“If you are going to try and tell the story of your life, really go for it.” The Match Factory has debuted an official international trailer for the film Yuli, telling the story of Cuban ballet superstar Carlos Acosta. This is premiering at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain later in the month, but has no other release plans set yet. The film follows Acosta – nicknamed Yuli by his father – from growing up on the streets of his native Cuba, through his time at the country’s National Dance School, to performing at London’s prestigious Royal Ballet. The lead role is played by Edilson Manuel Olbera Núñez as a boy and Keyvin Martínez as a young man, with Acosta also appearing in the film as himself. Along with Lukas Dhont’s Girl this year, this seems like another powerful story about a dedicated young dancer and his passion for the art of dance. ›››

  • Alex & Nat Wolff Star Together in Full Trailer for 'Stella's Last Weekend'

Alex & Nat Wolff Star Together in Full Trailer for 'Stella's Last Weekend'

    Stella's Last Weekend Trailer

“Don’t go near that girl again – no matter how much you like her.” The Orchard has debuted the official trailer for an indie dramedy titled Stella’s Last Weekend, which will be arriving in select theaters this October. The film stars brothers Nat Wolff and Alex Wolff, two big actors on the rise in tons of different films nowadays. And it’s written & directed by Polly Draper, an actress who also happens to be Alex & Nat’s real-life mom, making this quite the family affair. The film is about brothers Jack & Oliver who reunite to put their beloved dog to sleep. While their zany mother plans a party to celebrate Stella’s life, things go hilariously awry when the brothers discover they love the same girl. Aside from the two Wolff brothers, the film stars Paulina Singer, Nick Sandow, Polly Draper, and Julia Macchio. This looks very good, with some great humor that flows perfectly from these two (I dig the line about “Stella can’t read, Mom”). Enjoy. ›››

TIFF 2018: Jimmy Chin & E. Chai Vasarhelyi's Documentary 'Free Solo'

    Free Solo Review

There’s a quote in this film that sums up everything about how mind-blowing this feat is. “People who know a little bit about climbing, they’re like, ‘oh he’s totally safe.’ And then people who really know exactly what he’s doing, are freaked out.” Free Solo is the exhilarating new documentary film made by Jimmy Chin & E. Chai Vasarhelyi, the same team that made the mountain climbing doc Meru a few years ago. This time they profile an American climber named Alex Honnold, who was the first person ever to free solo climb El Capitan. Meaning he did not use any ropes or any safety gear, he just went up the rock face entirely on his own. If he made any mistake while climbing, he would be dead. But he didn’t make any mistakes, he pulled it off. Iit’s beyond incredible, a legendary feat in climbing history, which they capture on camera in this doc. ›››

“You don’t want me to talk?! I got dirt on all ya’ll!” An official trailer has arrived for an indie dramedy titled Thunder Road – written, directed by, and performed by Jim Cummings. Adapted from Cummings’ own award-winning Sundance short film of the same name, Thunder Road is about a southern police officer who must come to grips with a death of his mom when giving a heartfelt eulogy at her funeral, while trying to raise his young daughter.
