First Trailer for Gareth Evans' Cult Horror 'Apostle' with Dan Stevens

    Apostle Trailer

“Your eyes… they’ve seen things. Who are you…?” Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for Gareth Evans’ new film Apostle, his follow-up and latest film since making The Raid and The Raid 2, and the V/H/S/2 segment. Apostle is set to premiere at Fantastic Fest, then the Sitges Film Festival over the next month before arriving on Netflix. Set in 1905, the film is about a man who travels to a remote island to rescue his sister after she’s kidnapped by a mysterious religious cult demanding a ransom for her safe return. It soon becomes clear that the cult will rue the day it baited this man, as he digs deeper and deeper into the secrets and lies upon which the commune is built. Starring Dan Stevens, Lucy Boynton, Mark Lewis Jones, Michael Sheen, Kristine Froseth, Bill Milner, Elen Rhys, and Annes Elwy. This looks super creepy and twisted, extra intense and ultra violent, oh man watch out. I’m in, but nervous already about seeing this. ›››

Full Trailer for Zeek Earl & Chris Caldwell's Indie Sci-Fi Film 'Prospect'

    Prospect Trailer

“I can offer protection…” Gunpowder & Sky has released the full-length official trailer for an indie sci-fi film titled Prospect, which first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival this year. This excellent little sci-fi set on a far away moon is a feature adaptation of a short film made by Zeek Earl & Chris Caldwell in 2014 (watch here). The film is about a teen girl and her father who travel to a remote moon on the hunt for elusive riches. They discover others hiding in the moon’s toxic forest and their visit quickly devolves into a desperate fight to escape. Jay Duplass and Sophie Thatcher star, with a cast including Pedro Pascal, Andre Royo, Sheila Vand, and Anwan Glover. I had a chance to see this and it’s an outstanding film that achieves so much with so little, very much worth a watch. Especially if you dig sci-fi as much as I do. Check it out below. ›››

    Mary Poppins Returns Trailer

“I was flying the kite and it got caught in a nanny!” Disney has revealed the whimsical, lovely full-length trailer for the new Mary Poppins Returns movie, starring Emily Blunt as a young Mary Poppins. Set in Depression-era London, a now-grown Jane & Michael Banks, along with their three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, played by Lin-Manuel Miranda, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. The cast includes Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, along with Julie Walters as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen. The film also introduces three new Banks’ kids which are played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, and Joel Dawson. It’s wonderful to see them embracing the 2D animation + live-action mix from the original, and going all out with those scenes. This is going to be huge when it opens. ›››

  • Second Trailer for 'The Girl in the Spider's Web' Film Starring Claire Foy

Second Trailer for 'The Girl in the Spider's Web' Film Starring Claire Foy

The Girl in the Spider's Web Trailer

“Someone always has to carry the pain, now it’s your turn…” Sony has revealed the second trailer for the next film in David Fincher’s English-language version of The Girl in the Dragon Tattoo series, continuing with the sequel The Girl in the Spider’s Web. This time, Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez (of the Evil Dead remake) is directing and they’re going in what seems to be a bit of a new direction – with a more action-heavy psychological thriller vibe. The Girl in the Spider’s Web stars Claire Foy as the new Lisbeth, hacker extraordinaire, and Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason as her cohort Mikael Blomkvist. The full cast includes Sylvia Hoeks, Lakeith Stanfield, Stephen Merchant, Vicky Krieps, Cameron Britton, and Claes Bang from The Square. This trailer definitely has more action, including motorcycle chases and snipers, which seems a bit excessive for this crime thriller but so be it. Maybe this will turn out pretty good? ›››

  • TIFF 2018: Impressive Space Travel Sci-Fi Film 'Aniara' from Sweden

TIFF 2018: Impressive Space Travel Sci-Fi Film 'Aniara' from Sweden

    Aniara Review

Space. The final frontier. This is the story of the starship Aniara. If you know me, you know I’m a huge sci-fi geek. Especially when it comes to space travel, and anything involving space and planets and spaceships. I discovered a film at the Toronto Film Festival this year titled Aniara, a Swedish sci-fi film adapted from Harry Martinson’s epic poem of the same name. This astounding sci-fi film is set in the near future and is about a big spaceship taking colonists from Earth to Mars, usually a three week journey for batches of lazy humans. But it gets irreversibly knocked off course, causing the passengers to descend into madness once they begin to accept their fate: drifting into the void of space. This film is AMAZINGLY good, perhaps the best indie sci-fi I’ve seen since Arrival, perfectly executed and invigorating in its rigorous sci-fi storytelling. ›››

Sarah Greene Plays a Homeless Mother in Trailer for Irish Drama 'Rosie'

    Extremity Trailer

“I’ve always looked after them.” Element Pictures has debuted an official trailer for the indie drama Rosie, made by Irish filmmaker Paddy Breathnach (The Long Way Home, Tough Boys, Blow Dry, Man About Dog, Shrooms, Freakdog). The film is about a mother trying to protect her family after their landlord sells their rented home and they become homeless. Starring Sarah Greene as Rosie, with Moe Dunford, Natalia Kostrzewa, Ellie O’Halloran, Ruby Dunne, Darragh McKenzie, and Molly McCann. The film Rosie examines “how even in times of crises; the love and strength of a family can endure.” This looks like another powerful story about the struggles of modern society and people we may not think much about, similar to I, Daniel Blake. It looks moving and heartfelt. This just premiered at TIFF, then opens in Ireland next month. ›››

Super Crazy Trailer for 'Extreme Haunt' Horror Indie Film 'Extremity'

    Extremity Trailer

“A mind is a terrible thing to break.” Dread Central Presents has released the official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Extremity, the latest feature from director Anthony DiBlasi (Dread, Missionary, Last Shift, Most Likely to Die). Extremity plays with the popular modern horror concept of “extreme haunts”, or experiences horror fans can pay for that put them in horrific, torturous situations. The plot follows a young woman obsessed with horror who subjects herself to hours of grueling torment inside an extreme haunt in an attempt to confront her fears and conquer the tragic past that haunts her. Starring Dana Christina, J. LaRose, Cam Damage, September D’Angelo, Felissa Rose, Tiffany Shepis, Chad Rook, Michael St. Michaels, Natalie Victoria, and Ricky Dean Logan. I wasn’t even sure if I should post this, but it just looks so crazy with some seriously freaky imagery, I couldn’t help it. You hve to see all this for yourself. ›››

Watch: Short Doc 'Heart of Resilience' About a Boxing Gym in Toronto

    Heart of Resilience Short Film

“One extra push, one extra punch – that’s all it takes.” With the Toronto Film Festival coming to an end this weekend, we wanted to feature a short film made in Toronto showing how resilient and wonderful the city is. Heart of Resilience is a short film commissioned by the City of Toronto, made by filmmaking brothers Ryan Freeman and Brad Freeman, who run the studio Lossless Creative out of Toronto. This is the story of MJKO (official website), a non-profit boxing gym located in the lower income neighborhood of South Parkdale. The film shows how there are so many people and organizations working across Toronto to make it more resilient, and it’s an uplifting look at how friendship and openness make a big difference in society. This is a really lovely documentary about regular people and how boxing has changed them. Watch below. ›››

  • First Trailer for Onetti Bros' Film 'Abrakadabra' Premiering at Sitges

First Trailer for Onetti Bros' Film 'Abrakadabra' Premiering at Sitges

    Abrakadabra Trailer

Black Mandala presenta… A full trailer has debuted for an intriguing horror film titled Abrakadabra, the latest film by the Onetti Brothers (Luciano & Nicolás) who previously made What the Waters Left Behind and El Pulpo Negro. The brothers have been making their own version of the “Giallo” trilogy, starting with Sonno Profondo in 2013 and Francesca in 2015, and this is the final film in that trilogy. And they definitely go all out with that wacky, weird, twisted Giallo feel complete with the film stock grain and blood-splattered faces. The story follows a prestigious magician who presents a show, after which a series of murders occur, with the magician being framed. Starring Germán Baudino, María Eugenia Rigón, Clara Kovacic, Ivi Brickell, Gustavo D’Alessandro, Raúl Gederlini, and Pablo Vilela. This looks bloody and mad crazy. ›››

    Amundsen Trailer

“The greatest polar explorer in history!” SF Studios has unveiled the first teaser trailer for the upcoming biopic film Amundsen, profiling the life of iconic Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. Amundsen is a legendary name in Scandinavia, however not many people from America seem to know about him. He was the first to reach the South Pole in 1911, and the first person to reach both the North & South Poles in 1926, along with many other daring accomplishments exploring the coldest places on Earth. Pål Sverre Hagen plays Roald, and the cast includes Katherine Waterston, Jonas Strand Gravli, Trond Espen Seim, Ole Christoffer Ertvaag, Christian Rubeck, and Mads Sjøgård Pettersen. The film is also the solo directing debut of Espen Sandberg, who co-directed Kon-Tiki and Dead Men Tell No Tales previously. This looks awesome! Definitely seems like they went all out to tell this story. I’m looking forward to seeing more. ›››
