Full Trailer for College-Aged Obama Film 'Barry' Starring Devon Terrell

    Barry Trailer

“You a whole different type of brotha – you do realize that, right?” Netflix has unveiled the full trailer for the indie film Barry, telling another story about the early years of President Barack Obama. Barry is about “Barry” Obama during his college years, with an afro and everything, as played by Devon Terrell. Most of it takes place around New York City, as Obama was studying at Columbia University at the time. The cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Ashley Judd, Jenna Elfman, Ellar Coltrane, Jason Mitchell and John Benjamin Hickey. From the first teaser trailer, I mentioned that I didn’t need to see anything else to be sold. This new trailer shows quite a bit, but I’m still into it – I really want to see this right away. Take a look. ›››

Second Trailer for Sony's 'Smurfs: The Lost Village' Animated Reboot

    Smurfs: The Lost Village Trailer

“We all know the place: the magic mushroom houses, the tiny white pants…” Sony Pictures has debuted a brand new full-length trailer for their CGI animated reboot of The Smurfs movie, titled Smurfs: The Lost Village. The first teaser trailer didn’t show much, this trailer gives us a better glimpse at the story – which seems to involve finding more Smurfs elsewhere, including maybe even more girls. As expected, a few of the Smurfs go out on an adventure to find this “lost village” before Gargamel does. Smurfs: The Lost Village features the voices of Mandy Patinkin as Papa Smurf, Rainn Wilson as Gargamel, Joe Manganiello as Hefty, Demi Lovato as Smurfette, Jack McBrayer as Clumsy, and Danny Pudi as Brainy. This looks fun. ›››

Watch: Chris Santana's '2016 – A Year in Film' Recap Video is First Up

    2016 - A Year in Film

Even though we have another month left, cinephiles are already releasing 2016 recap videos. Chris Santana has launched the very first 2016 – A Year in Film recap, which includes footage from almost every (major) movie released in 2016. The only one missing is Martin Scorsese’s Silence, only because they still haven’t released a trailer for it yet. I’m very happy to see smaller films like Jackie, Moonlight, Lion and Manchester by the Sea featured in this, especially because they’re an important part of 2016 in film. And it’s especially important to include La La Land, most likely because it has the best chance at winning Best Picture. Dive in. ›››

  • Dakota Fanning & Guy Pearce in First Trailer for 'Brimstone' Western

Dakota Fanning & Guy Pearce in First Trailer for 'Brimstone' Western

    Brimstone Trailer

“Retribution is coming.” An official trailer has debuted for an indie western titled Brimstone, from Dutch filmmaker Martin Koolhoven, which premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. Brimstone stars Guy Pearce as a violent, ruthless, vengeful preacher who rules over a small town in the Old West. Dakota Fanning plays Liz, a woman “full of heart and grit” who resists his demands and figures out how to fight back. Also starring Kit Harington as the man that comes to save the town, plus Carice van Houten, Paul Anderson, Carla Juri and Emilia Jones. This looks like a very dark drama that retaliates against religious persecution. I’m stunned by how gnarly Pearce looks as the preacher. Don’t want to mess with him. ›››

  • Watch: Dark Cyber Punk Short Film 'Lost Boy' by PostPanic Pictures

Watch: Dark Cyber Punk Short Film 'Lost Boy' by PostPanic Pictures

    Lost Boy Short Film

Another wicked cool cyber punk short film to watch. Lost Boy is the latest project from PostPanic Pictures, an Amsterdam-based production company (also behind the sci-fi short film Sundays). The film is a pitch for a feature sci-fi project from directors Anthony Scott Burns and Ash Thorp, and introduces us to a dark, gritty, barren world. Inspired by American action classics and Japanese samurai films, this has a true cyber punk design aesthetic, and looks damn good for a short film made on a limited budget. I really dig the world design and the costumes, though there’s not much of a story here but hopefully that is something they’re working on for the feature. The vehicle that shows up at the end is probably the coolest part. Check this out. ›››

  • Watch: Tye Sheridan & Bel Powley in Trailer for Crime Thriller 'Detour'

Watch: Tye Sheridan & Bel Powley in Trailer for Crime Thriller 'Detour'

    Detour

“Don’t regret the things you do, just the things you don’t.” Magnet Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for a gritty crime thriller titled Detour, a neo-noir from filmmaker Christopher Smith (of Creep, Triangle, Black Death). The fantastic young cast in this is lead by Tye Sheridan (seen in Mud, X-Men: Apocalypse), Emory Cohen (seen in Brooklyn, The Place Beyond the Pines) and Bel Powley (seen in The Diary of a Teenage Girl). The film involves Sheridan playing a young law student named Harper, who meets a grifter and his companion who get him into all kinds of trouble. Also featuring Stephen Moyer, John Lynch, Jared Abrahamson and Gbenga Akinnagbe. The most interesting aspect is the split-screen narrative, which seems like a unique twist but you’ll have to see the film to find out how exactly it plays into the story. ›››

  • Jacob Tierney & Jessica Paré in First Trailer for 'Lovesick' Romance

Jacob Tierney & Jessica Paré in First Trailer for 'Lovesick' Romance

    Lovesick Trailer

“Guess you’re gunna have to stop the wedding.” eOne in Canada has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie romance titled Lovesick, about a 30-something guy dealing with problems with his love life. Jacob Tierney stars as Dash, the guy at the center, who still has a thing for his ex-girlfriend, played by Quebecois actress Jessica Paré. Along the way he meets a new girl, of course, named Nora played by Ali Tataryn. The cast also includes Jay Baruchel, Rebecca Gibson and Adam Brooks. This looks charming and has some nice moments, but the story seems so typical – from one beautiful girl to the next, what is a guy to do? ›››

Watch: Official Trailer for Doc About 'Magicians: Life in the Impossible'

Magicians: Life in the Impossible Trailer

“I haven’t felt that magic has ever let me down.” I’ve always been a fan of magic since I was a kid, and I love going to shows, even still as an adult. Magicians: Life in the Impossible is a documentary about the lives of professional magicians, and how hard it is and how dedicated they have to be. We’ve seen quite a few movies about magicians recently (between Now You See Me and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone) but it’s nice to actually see a story about the real people, the real men and women who make us all believe in magic. One could say this doc almost looks like Hoop Dreams for magicians, following four different performers as they try to establish themselves in the entertainment industry. Fellow magic lover Peter from SlashFilm says this doc is worth watching and it’s already out on VOD, so give this a look and let us know what you think. ›››

  • New Trailer for Darren Bousman's Haunted House Horror 'Abattoir'

New Trailer for Darren Bousman's Haunted House Horror 'Abattoir'

    Abattoir Trailer

“The guy is a ghost collecting ghosts.” Momentum Pictures has debuted a new trailer for the haunted house horror thriller Abattoir, from director Darren Bousman (of Saw II-IV and Repo! The Genetic Opera). The film stars Jessica Lowndes as a real estate reporter who teams up with a cop to investigate the death of her family. This leads her to discover a house in the town of New English called the Abattoir, featuring “stitched together” unending rooms of death. There’s obviously something much more sinister going on with this place, but the question that keeps coming up is: “How do you build a haunted house?” The cast includes Joe Anderson, Dayton Callie, John McConnell and Lin Shaye. If you’re a horror fan, give this a look. ›››
