Watch: Trailer for Bryan Bertino's 'The Monster' Starring Zoe Kazan

    The Monster Trailer

“Dogs don’t got teeth like this.” A24 has finally unveiled a trailer for the horror thriller The Monster, the latest feature from Bryan Bertino, the director behind the 2008 hit The Strangers. The Monster is indeed about a creepy monster, despite the tendency for movies like this to trick you into thinking “the monster” is just some deranged human living in the woods. Zoe Kazan and Ella Ballentine play mother-daughter in the film. When their car breaks down in the middle of the woods, things get increasingly creepy. The cast includes Scott Speedman, Aaron Douglas, Christine Ebadi and Chris Webb as the “monster”. This seems like a very quiet release, with the film being dumped without much buzz, but who knows. Take a look. ›››

Isabelle Huppert in New US Trailer for Hansen-Løve's 'Things to Come'

    Things to Come Trailer

“You act like everything’s the same. What planet are you on?” IFC has unveiled an official US trailer for the film Things to Come, the latest from French filmmaker Mia Hansen-Løve (read my interview with her here). This is also the other great Isabelle Huppert film this year, along with Paul Verhoeven’s Elle (which Jeremy raved about at Fantastic Fest). This film has been playing the festival circuit since premiering at the Berlin Film Festival in February, and we already posted the UK trailer for it a few months ago. The full cast includes André Marcon, Roman Kolinka, and Edith Scob. The film follows a woman who experiences a few major shakeups in her life, including a divorce and the birth of a grandchild. It’s a very philosophical but enjoyable film (there’s a cute cat in it!), as expected from Mia Hansen-Løve. In theaters later this year. ›››

  • 'On the Map' Documentary Trailer About the Israeli Basketball Team

'On the Map' Documentary Trailer About the Israeli Basketball Team

    On the Map Trailer

“We are on the map. And we will stay on the map! Not only in sports, but in everything!” That was the iconic line spoken by Israeli basketball player Tal Brody after his team won the European Championship in 1977. On the Map is a documentary that profiles the successful victory of the Israeli basketball team in the 1970s, an amazing feat that actually did help put Israel “on the map” – at least in sports history. This looks like it has glorious old school footage from the matches, as well as some great interviews with many of the players who are still alive today. Israeli figures from outside the sports world, including former ambassador Michael Oren, politician Yair Lapid and former refusenik Natan Sharansky, all recall what TV commentator Alex Giladi calls “the end of Israeli sport losing with honor.” If you’re into sports docs, check this out below. ›››

  • New US Trailer for Germany's Academy Award Entry 'Toni Erdmann'

New US Trailer for Germany's Academy Award Entry 'Toni Erdmann'

    Toni Erdmann Trailer

“Life is just passing by…” Sony Classics has debuted an official US trailer for the highly acclaimed film Toni Erdmann, a drama from Germany that is being submitted by the country as their official Academy Award entry this year. Directed by Maren Ade, the film stars Peter Simonischek and Sandra Hüller as father and daughter. Hüller doesn’t get to see her father much now that she works as a consultant for companies around the world. However, he decides to invade her life again as the character “Toni Erdmann”, following her to Bucharest on a business trip. The film is both sad and funny at the same time, but also poignant and unforgettable. Critics have been raving about it ever since it premiered in Cannes, and it certainly lives up to the acclaim. You’ll laugh heartily throughout, especially at the end. Don’t skip seeing this outstanding film. ›››

  • First Trailer for Wacky Sci-Fi Graphic Novel Adaptation 'Officer Downe'

First Trailer for Wacky Sci-Fi Graphic Novel Adaptation 'Officer Downe'

    Officer Downe Trailer

“Are you ready to crush some criminal cranium?” What in the world is this?! A trailer has arrived for a film called Officer Downe, adapted from the graphic novel of the same name. It’s about a zombie police officer in the future who is resurrected every time he dies, cleaning up the streets of Los Angeles the only way he knows how – “with extreme prejudice and a total disdain for gun-running nuns and kung fu criminals.” Kim Coates stars as Officer Downe, with a fun cast including Sam Witwer, Lauren Vélez, Alison Lohman, Lindsay Pulsipher, Reno Wilson, Tyler Ross and filmmaker Mark Neveldine (who also produced it). This looks totally whacko, but also kind of badass, like Judge Dredd if it were a low budget D-movie. Enjoy. ›››

  • Watch: Official US Trailer for French Coming-of-Age Drama 'Divines'

Watch: Official US Trailer for French Coming-of-Age Drama 'Divines'

    Divines Trailer

“You have to dare to be rich.” Netflix has debuted a trailer for a French film titled Divines, which won the Golden Camera (or Camera d’Or) at the Cannes Film Festival – the top prize for a first-time filmmaker. Uda Benyamina directs this coming-of-age film about a teen from the slum streets of Paris who meets a dancer that changes her life. Oulaya Amamra stars as Dounia, the girl at the center of the story, with Déborah Lukumuena, Kevin Mischel, Jisca Kalvanda, Yasin Houicha, Majdouline Idrissi & Bass Dhem. I always admire French coming-of-age films because they have contain a unique perspective on growing up that’s different than what I’m used to, and there’s always something to pick up. This looks like a great film. ›››

  • Must Watch: Natalie Portman in First Trailer for Pablo Larraín's 'Jackie'

Must Watch: Natalie Portman in First Trailer for Pablo Larraín's 'Jackie'

    Jackie Trailer

“Don’t let it be forgot, that for one brief shining moment there was a Camelot.” Fox Searchlight has put out a teaser trailer for the other Pablo Larrain film this year, titled Jackie, his first English-language feature. Natalie Portman stars as First Lady Jackie Kennedy, profiling her experiences after the assassination of her husband, President John F. Kennedy, in 1966. The cast includes Peter Sarsgaard as Bobby Kennedy, Greta Gerwig, Billy Crudup, John Hurt, John Carroll Lynch, Richard E. Grant and Max Casella. I had the chance to see this film and it’s one of the best of the year, it’s phenomenal, and Portman is superb in it. This is a lovely, nice glimpse at the film – and all you need to see before catching this one in theaters. ›››

  • First Trailer for Action Movie Remake 'Sleepless' Starring Jamie Foxx

First Trailer for Action Movie Remake 'Sleepless' Starring Jamie Foxx

    Sleepless Trailer

“You touch my son, I’ll kill you.” Open Road Films has unveiled the first full trailer for an action film titled Sleepless, the American remake of one of my favorite French films titled Sleepless Night. The original film is set almost entirely inside a nightclub in Paris, with some sleek action cinematography. This new one stars Jamie Foxx as an angry father who goes into a nightclub to search for his kidnapped son. The cast features Michelle Monaghan, David Harbour, Dermot Mulroney, Gabrielle Union, Scoot McNairy, T.I. and Sala Baker. There’s plenty of violence in this, with guns galore and much more. I’m still partial to the original film, but this doesn’t look so bad. Not sure if it’ll be set entirely in the club, but Foxx looks wicked. ›››

  • Time Goes Backwards in Clever TV Spot for Marvel's 'Doctor Strange'

Time Goes Backwards in Clever TV Spot for Marvel's 'Doctor Strange'

    Doctor Strange Time

“His time is now.” Okay – this is cool. Disney has released a new, 30-second TV spot for Marvel’s Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson, and the entire thing runs in reverse. You need to see this! Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the Sorcerer Supreme, a comic book superhero that gains special mystical powers after meeting “The Ancient One”, played by Tilda Swinton. This also features Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen, Scott Adkins, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Stuhlbarg and Benedict Wong. I needed to post about this TV spot because it’s so clever and so cool. I love that they even run the dialogue backwards, I’m impressed Disney went with this. Hopefully it means they’re excited for everyone experience this movie. ›››
