    A Monster Calls

Confronting the real world through imagination is at the heart of the new fantasy film A Monster Calls, the new visual feast from Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona (of the films The Orphanage, The Impossible previously). Bayona, along with screenwriter Patrick Ness (adapting his own novel), have taken the fairly mundane story of a child coming-of-age and given it a colorful makeover mixing excitement and real-world heartache. The story is about Conor O’Malley (played by Lewis MacDougall, also seen in Pan) who is only 12 years old but he’s already dealing with adult problems involving his family and his life at school. ›››

Official Trailer for 'We Are X' Doc About Japanese Rock Band X Japan

    We Are X Documentary Trailer

“If you put everything into something, you don’t lose.” Drafthouse Films has debuted an official trailer for the documentary titled We Are X, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. We Are X is about the Japanese rock band known as X Japan, “the world’s biggest and most successful band you’ve never heard of…yet.” They’re a Japanese rock band formed in 1982 by childhood friends Yoshiki and Toshi with “glam rock” music dubbed “psychedelic violence crime of visual shock.” This doc tells their story, not only about their formation, but about their rise to fame and journey to play Madison Square Garden. This looks like a wacky, weird, but fun doc about a one-of-a-kind band. It’s being released by Drafthouse Films which means there’s definitely an edge to this that will make it worth watching. Check out the trailer below. ›››

  • TIFF 2016: Bullets Non-Stop in Ben Wheatley's Action Film 'Free Fire'

TIFF 2016: Bullets Non-Stop in Ben Wheatley's Action Film 'Free Fire'

    Ben Wheatley's Free Fire

The energy was palpable at the midnight world premiere of Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire last Thursday night. The famous Midnight Madness screenings at the Toronto Film Festival are known to be a fun event, with an enthusiastic crowd soaking up the energy of the late night festivities. No one could expect that the film that we were about to see would not only match the energy of the theater, but crank it all the way to 11. Dripping in 70’s camp, Free Fire tells a story of a costly gun transaction that goes south very quickly. For 90 minutes you are stuck in a filthy Boston warehouse with these characters who have one thing in mind – take the money used to purchase the guns and get the hell out of dodge. As guns are drawn, bullets start to fly, and lines get drawn, the absurdity of the situation sinks in and the film become disturbingly dark and hilarious. ›››

  • TIFF 2016: Fuqua's 'The Magnificent Seven' is Sheer Entertainment

TIFF 2016: Fuqua's 'The Magnificent Seven' is Sheer Entertainment

    The Magnificent Seven Review

Seven outlaws come together to save a helpless town from a greedy tyrant in Antoine Fuqua’s new version of The Magnificent Seven, a remake of the original 1960 film (directed by John Sturges) which in itself was an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai. That’s probably the most confusing thing to be said about this new movie since the story its telling is as straight-forward and as expected as you’ve seen many times before. The good news, however, is what Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven lacks in originality it more than makes up for in sheer entertainment, for those wondering if this one is worth seeing. ›››

New US Trailer for Funinmation's Upcoming Release of 'Shin Godzilla'

    Shin Godzilla Trailer

“The Legend Returns…” Funimation has unveiled another new official US trailer for the upcoming release of Shin Godzilla, originally known as Godzilla: Resurgence in Japan (or also Shin Gojira), Toho’s new rebooted take on the giant lizard monster. “Make way for the ultimate homage to one of the most enduring legends of the big screen—Godzilla! The King of the Monsters is back in Tokyo for a city-crushing crusade that speaks to the very roots of the world-renowned franchise.” We’ve already featured other international trailers for this, but you can watch another one with even more footage below. There’s surprisingly almost no shots of the Godzilla monster in this, instead it’s all people in rooms and running around and freaking out, which is a bit odd. If you’re still excited for this, you can get tickets now for its October opening. Enjoy. ›››

Watch: Jamie Dornan in Trailer for Netflix's 'The Siege of Jadotville'

    The Siege of Jadotville Trailer

“If you continue to attack, we will continue to respond.” Netflix has debuted a trailer for a new film titled The Siege of Jadotville, about the “untold true story” of “The Siege of Jadotville“. The siege took place in September 1961, during the UN intervention in the Katanga conflict in Congo-Léopoldville in Central Africa when a company of Irish UN troops were attacked by troops loyal to the Katangese Prime Minister Moise Tshombe. The lightly-armed Irish soldiers resisted Katangese assaults for six days as a relief force of Irish and Swedish troops attempted to reach them. Jamie Dornan stars, with Mark Strong, Jason O’Mara, Mikael Persbrandt, Guillaume Canet & Amy Louise Wilson. This looks much better than expected. ›››

Watch: Official Trailer for 'The Free World' Featuring Elisabeth Moss

    The Free World Trailer

“Why are you helping me?” IFC Films has debuted the trailer for the indie drama The Free World, which premiered at Sundance this year, about a man fresh out of prison for crimes he didn’t commit. He meets a woman with an abusive husband, and decides to risk his own life to be with her. Starring Elisabeth Moss as Doris, and Boyd Holbrook as Mo Lundy. The cast includes Octavia Spencer, Sung Kang, Sue-Lynn Ansari and Waleed Zuaiter. It seems like a solid drama, but I don’t remember hearing much buzz about it during Sundance. As always, Moss looks to be giving a great performance and it might be worth it for her. ›››

First Trailer for 'The Promise' Featuring Oscar Isaac & Christian Bale

    The Promise Trailer

“He wants us to help his family escape… We have to help him.” Survival Pictures has unveiled a trailer for an indie drama called The Promise, set during the last days of the Ottoman Empire. The film follows a love triangle between Michael, a brilliant medical student, the beautiful and sophisticated Ana, and Chris – a renowned American journalist based in Paris. Starring Oscar Isaac as Michael, with Christian Bale as Chris, and Charlotte Le Bon as Ana. Also featuring Angela Sarafyan, Shohreh Aghdashloo, James Cromwell, Jean Reno, Rade Serbedzija & Michael Stahl-David. This seems like a big, bold attempt to tell the story of the Armenian genocide featuring with an impressive cast, which actually makes this worth watching. This also doesn’t look so much like an indie, rather a very large production. I’m curious to see it. ›››

    Suspect Her Documentary Trailer

Suspect her. Believe her. See the other side. Netflix has released a trailer for their upcoming documentary titled Amanda Knox, telling the full and uncensored story of Amanda Knox, the woman who was accused of killing her roommate in Italy in 2007. The documentary focuses on Amanda Knox specifically, featuring extensive interviews with her as well as her former co-defendant and ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, Italian prosecutor Giuliano Mignini and Daily Mail reporter Nick Pisa. Which side of the story do you believe? See both sides below. I think I’m most impressed that Netflix is releasing this so soon after it premieres at the Toronto Film Festival, which is great because as soon as people start seeing this and we start hearing more about it, it’ll be available for anyone to watch. These two new trailers are also very compelling side-by-side. ›››

Second Trailer for Comedy 'Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life'

Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life Trailer

“Creativity has no place in this school.” CBS Films has debuted a second full-length trailer for the film Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life, an adaptation of the bestselling book series of the same name. Young actor Griffin Gluck stars as Rafe Katchadorian, a boy with a “wild imagination” bored of middle school who decides to break every rule and see what happens, bringing his friends with him. The full cast includes Lauren Graham, Rob Riggle, Thomas Barbusca, Andy Daly, Adam Pally, and Efren Ramirez. This actually looks really fun, especially disregarding the rules and messing with expectations. I’m sure if I were younger I’d enjoy it even more, but still, it looks pretty good. “Rules aren’t for everyone!” ›››
