'Moonlight' Sweeps with 6 Major Wins at the 2017 Indie Spirit Awards

2017 Indie Spirit Awards - Barry Jenkins

The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring plenty of those little indies which deserve the honor and recognition that they usually don’t receive – celebrating their 32nd year. The 2017 winners of the Spirit Awards were announced Saturday before the Oscars at a ceremony out in Santa Monica. The big winner this year was Moonlight, winning six awards total in almost all of the categories it was nominated in, including Best Director (go Barry Jenkins!), Best Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Cinematography. This seems like a strong message to the Academy about how great this films is, even if it doesn’t win any Oscars. Read on for the list of Indie Spirit Awards results. ›››

Watch: New Trailer for 4K Re-Release of Woody Allen's 'Manhattan'

    Woody Allen's Manhattan

“He adored New York City… He romanticized it all out of proportion.” Park Circus and MGM have unveiled a brand new trailer for the 4K digital re-release this year of Woody Allen’s seminal romantic comedy classic Manhattan, which first opened in 1979. It didn’t win any Oscars, but it did win Best Film at the BAFTAs. Woody Allen also stars in this, along with Diane Keaton, Michael Murphy, Mariel Hemingway, Meryl Streep, Anne Byrne, Karen Ludwig and Michael O’Donoghue. The 96-minute film has been carefully restored to 4K, and will be released in NYC first, which is fitting considering it’s all about a love for NYC. Ebert wrote in a review from 2001 that “it’s more subtle, more complex, and not about love, but loss.” ›››

  • First Trailer for Hazing Drama 'Burning Sands' from Gerard McMurray

First Trailer for Hazing Drama 'Burning Sands' from Gerard McMurray

    Burning Sands Trailer

“It’s all about the brotherhood.” Netflix has debuted the official trailer for a film titled Burning Sands, which initially premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January this year. Directed by newcomer Gerard McMurray, making his feature debut, the film is about a fraternity pledge named Zurich played by Trevor Jackson. Deep into Hell Week, he finds himself torn between honoring his code of silence or standing up against the intensifying violence of underground hazing. The cast includes Alfre Woodard, Steve Harris, Tosin Cole, DeRon Horton, along with Moonlight star Trevante Rhodes. I’m already totally opposed to hazing and fraternities, so these kind of films don’t interest me much (especially just to watch so many people suffer). But this does look like it might be a good film, so perhaps it is worth watching. Have a look. ›››

  • First Teaser Trailer for 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul' Sequel

First Teaser Trailer for 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul' Sequel

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul Trailer

“A Wimp will rise.” Fox has released an extended teaser trailer for the latest sequel in the comedy series Diary of a Wimpy Kid, this one subtitled The Long Haul, about a family road trip. This is the fourth movie in the cinematic franchise based on the popular series of books by Jeff Kinney. Young actor Jason Drucker plays Greg, who convinces his family to take a road trip to attend his great grandmother’s 90th birthday as a cover for what he really wants: to attend a nearby gamer convention. The cast includes Jason Ian Drucker, Charlie Wright, Owen Asztalos, Tom Everett Scott, and Alicia Silverstone. Yes, this looks as campy and as absurd as you might expect for the fourth movie in the Wimpy Kid series. Not for me. ›››

  • Theatrical Trailer for Joseph Cedar's 'Norman' Starring Richard Gere

Theatrical Trailer for Joseph Cedar's 'Norman' Starring Richard Gere

    Norman Trailer

“Why do I get the feeling that nothing you tell me is real?” Sony Classics has debuted the full theatrical trailer for the film titled Norman, in full it’s Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer. This is the latest from Footnote director Joseph Cedar and stars Richard Gere as a “fixer” in New York City trying to help out other wealthy businessman/politicians. He gets mixed up in something a little over his head, and has trouble figuring out how to land on his feet. The cast includes Lior Ashkenazi, Hank Azaria, Steve Buscemi, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Michael Sheen, and Dan Stevens. This is a funky, odd, and somewhat depressing film but some folks will find it worthwhile entertainment. Take a look. ›››

  • New US Trailer for Lone Scherfig's 'Their Finest' with Gemma Arterton

New US Trailer for Lone Scherfig's 'Their Finest' with Gemma Arterton

    Their Finest Trailer

“People like films, because stories are structure. And when things turn bad, it’s still part of a plan.” STX Entertainment has unveiled a new trailer for the film Their Finest, the latest feature from writer/director Lone Scherfig, of the films The Riot Club, One Day and An Education (one of my favorites). The film is a WWII-set comedy about an awkward British team that attempts to boost morale by making a propaganda film. Gemma Arterton stars as a writer, along with an impressive ensemble cast including Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy, Jack Huston, Paul Ritter, Rachael Stirling, Richard E. Grant, Henry Goodman, Jake Lacy, Jeremy Irons, Eddie Marsan and Helen McCrory. This has screened at numerous film festivals and looks immensely charming and uplifting, which may be exactly what we need right now. Enjoy. ›››

    1 Mile To You Trailer

“I run because I have to. I feel something when I run.” Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for a romantic sports drama titled 1 Mile To You, about a runner struggling with loss. Graham Rogers (from “Quantico”, Love & Mercy) stars, along with Stefanie Scott, Liana Liberato, Billy Crudup, and Tim Roth. The film is about a young man who loses his girlfriend in an accident, and runs to keep connected to her. That is until he meets a new woman, who helps him through his pain. It’s described as an “uplifting, emotional, and visceral” story “about the power of our fondest memories to sustain us through our worst traumas – and when it is time to let the memories go and face an uncertain future.” Doesn’t that sound fun? ›››

Must Watch: Superb Opening Prologue Preview for 'Alien: Covenant'

    Alien: Covenant Prologue

“It kinda spooks me out – it’s a big old sea of nothing.” Fox has revealed a fantastic 4-minute opening prologue preview for Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant. This is such an awesome way to introduce everyone to these new characters in this movie. In the preview, the entire crew on the new mission gather for a final meal before entering cryosleep. There’s some really great moments in this, it’s kind of eerie how good this is, especially Waterston’s speech at the end. The massive cast includes: Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, James Franco, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Carmen Ejogo, Callie Hernandez, Demián Bichir, Jussie Smollett, Uli Latukefu, Benjamin Rigby, and Amy Seimetz. Everyone needs to pause and watch this. “I couldn’t pick a better bunch of jerks to get marooned on a distant planet with.” ›››

  • Berlinale 2017: 'Wilde Maus' Amusingly Profiles a Critic's Breakdown

Berlinale 2017: 'Wilde Maus' Amusingly Profiles a Critic's Breakdown

    Wilde Maus Review

There’s nothing like watching someone breakdown completely. Wilde Maus, which translates simply to Wild Mouse, is a dark comedy film from Austria which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. Austrian actor Josef Hader makes his feature directorial debut with the film, also writing the screenplay and starring as the lead character, a music critic from Vienna who loses his job after 20 years. The film follows Hader as Georg, who goes bonkers and starts wandering around Vienna trying to make sense of his life after losing the job that kept him focused for so long. He ends up creating some unnecessary problems with his wife, and randomly partners with a guy who wants to run a little rollercoaster at Vienna’s Prater amusement park. ›››

Hand-Drawn Film 'My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea' Trailer

My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea Trailer

“Help me and I’ll invite you to my next party, I swear!” GKids has debuted the first official trailer for an animated film titled My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea, which earned rave reviews out of the Toronto and New York Film Festivals last year. The hand-drawn film from acclaimed cartoonist Dash Shaw deals with exactly what the title says – an earthquake causes a high school to float into the sea, where it slowly sinks like a shipwreck. The impressive voice cast includes Jason Schwartzman, Reggie Watts, Lena Dunham, Maya Rudolph, Susan Sarandon, Alex Karpovsky, Louisa Krause, director John Cameron Mitchell, and Matthew Maher. Maybe it’s just hearing Schwartzman in a school setting again, but this feels like a twisted mashup between Wes Anderson and Don Hertzfeldt, kind of like that. I’m so in. ›››
