    The Lure Trailer

“All you need to do is have fun. The rest is easy.” Janus Films has debuted an official US trailer (red band for mermaid nudity) for a film titled The Lure, a wacky Polish indie about two mermaid girls who join a human band in Warsaw. Part comedy, part cabaret, part horror, part romance, you won’t find anything else like this film out there, though it may be a little too wacky for some. The cast includes Marta Mazurek, Michalina Olszanska, Kinga Preis, Andrzej Konopka, Jakub Gierszal, Zygmunt Malanowicz, Katarzyna Herman and Marcin Kowalczyk. I’ve been hearing about this film for a while, ever since it premiered at Sundance last year, and it’s destined to become a cult classic – catch it in theaters this winter. ›››

  • Third Trailer for Awkward Boy from Mars Film 'The Space Between Us'

Third Trailer for Awkward Boy from Mars Film 'The Space Between Us'

    The Space Between Us Trailer

“His heart can’t handle our gravity, it’s too risky!” STX Entertainment has debuted one more trailer for the cheesy romantic drama The Space Between Us, about a boy born on Mars who returns to Earth and falls in love with a young woman from Colorado. We’ve seen so many trailers for this already, and the film was delayed from being release last fall, until this February (supposedly to distance itself from the release of two other big space movies last December – Rogue One and Passengers). Asa Butterfield plays the boy, and Britt Robertson plays the girl he falls for and chases all over Earth. The full cast includes Carla Gugino, Gary Oldman, BD Wong, Janet Montgomery, and Jenny Gabrielle. Will this end up being worth the wait? I’m not so sure, but hopefully they won’t delay the release any further. I just want to see this already. ›››

I Am Not Your Negro Doc Trailer

“The story of the negro in America, is the story of America.” Magnolia has unveiled a full theatrical trailer for the documentary I Am Not Your Negro, about the life & legacy of James Baldwin. This doc is being heralded as one of the best of 2016, even though it’s just hitting theaters coming up this February. The film focuses on the book “Remember This House”, that Baldwin never finished. Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions a finished version of the book – a “radical narration” about race in America, through the lives and deaths of three of Baldwin’s friends: Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers and Malcolm X. The doc uses his original words to tell the harrowing story of race in modern America, and it’s one of the finest docs you’ll see. Relevant, important, intelligent, and inspiring. I can’t recommend this film enough – it’s a must watch. ›››

  • Second Trailer for Horror Sequel 'Rings' Directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez

Second Trailer for Horror Sequel 'Rings' Directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez

    Rings Trailer

“There once was a girl… no one dare speak her name.” Paramount has debuted a new trailer for the horror sequel Rings, the third film in the Ring series, originally a remake of the Japanese horror series. This film is finally, supposedly, being released in February this year, after being delayed from late 2016. The second film was released in 2005, three years after the first Ring hit theaters in 2002. This new one picks up 13 years after the first film and it looks like it’s just as freaky. Starring Laura Wiggins, Aimee Teegarden, Johnny Galecki, Lizzie Brocheré, Alex Roe, Zach Roerig, and Bonnie Morgan as Samara. Horror films in the winter usually do well, and I’m sure this one will find an audience – no matter how delayed it is. ›››

    Cars 3 Teaser Trailer

Meet the hot, young racers that Lightning is going up against. Disney has released a fun new teaser trailer for Pixar’s Cars 3, introducing two of the new villains in the upcoming sequel hitting theaters this summer. The racecar Lightning McQueen, voiced by Owen Wilson, is back again and this time he must prove he’s still relevant when a “new generation of blazing-fast racers” threatens to push him out. The very first teaser trailer was quite dramatic – showing a big crash about to happen. The two new bad boy cars include Jackson Storm, voiced by Armie Hammer, and Cruz Ramirez, voiced by Cristela Alonzo – revealed by EW.com. Both of them get short little video introductions in this fun teaser. I’m still waiting to see more real footage. ›››

Riley Keough & Jena Malone Are Good Friends in Trailer for 'Lovesong'

    Lovesong

“It’s okay to feel a little crazy… But it’s not fair to you to have to do it all by yourself.” Strand Releasing has debuted a trailer for the film Lovesong, an indie drama that premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival last year. Lovesong is the latest film from Korean-American director So-yong Kim, starring Riley Keough and Jena Malone as two close friends who end up getting even closer when they go on a roadtrip together just before one of them is getting married. The cast includes Brooklyn Decker, fellow filmmaker Cary Fukunaga, Juliet Fitzpatrick, Neal Huff, Ryan Eggold, Marshall Chapman & Amy Seimetz. This trailer has a nice feel to it, and this seems like it might be worth catching for these two lead performances. ›››

  • J.K. Simmons vs Emile Hirsch in First Trailer for Comedy 'All Nighter'

J.K. Simmons vs Emile Hirsch in First Trailer for Comedy 'All Nighter'

    All Nighter Trailer

“This is not a movie, this is life.” The first trailer has debuted for an indie comedy titled All Nighter, the second feature from director Gavin Wiesen, who last directed a film titled Homework (which was retitled to The Art of Getting By). All Nighter stars J.K. Simmons as a workaholic father who decides to visit his daughter in LA, only to discover she’s missing. He find her ex-boyfriend and ends up searching for her with him. Emile Hirsch is the ex, a banjo-playing goofball. The full cast includes Analeigh Tipton, Kristen Schaal, Taran Killam and Stephanie Allynne. This looks like a wild night of fun, I just hope it’s good. ›››

The Girl with All the Gifts Trailer

Saban Films has debuted an official US trailer for the zombie horror adaptation The Girl with All the Gifts, which already opened in the UK last year. The story is about a girl, named Melanie, who is being kept at a military base that is one of the only remaining safe havens in a zombie apocalypse. When the base it overtaken, she goes on the run with a few other people, attempting to survive in a hostile world. The movie stars Sennia Nanua as Melanie, along with Gemma Arterton, Glenn Close and Paddy Considine. I saw this film at a genre festival in Berlin last year and really enjoyed it, one of the most refreshingly original updates to the zombie genre I’ve seen in a while. I highly recommend it, for the performances alone. This US trailer contains some spoilers and crops the footage, but the UK trailer is still available to watch. Have fun. ›››

  • 2017 Writers Guild Awards Nominees Include 'La La Land' & 'Deadpool'

2017 Writers Guild Awards Nominees Include 'La La Land' & 'Deadpool'

    WGA Nominations 2017 - Deadpool

The next set of 2016 awards nominees have been revealed. The WGA Awards nominations were unveiled today, featuring a very interesting set of films. Many of these are my favorite movies of the year anyway – between Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, and Eric Heisserer’s Arrival, and Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, we’re pretty much set. But they also nominated a few other underrated scripts including Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick’s Deadpool, Taylor Sheridan’s fantastic crime thriller Hell or High Water, as well as Allison Schroeder and Theodore Melfi’s Hidden Figures. As usual with the WGA, I’m impressed by the nominees, as the WGA is less about popularity and truly about quality. Check out the full list of film nominees below. ›››

    Arrival VFX Reel

One of our favorite movies of 2016 is Arrival, the science fiction thriller from Denis Villeneuve. Aside from a brilliant script by Eric Heisserer, the film contains stunning visuals, in part thanks to cinematographer Bradford Young, but also thanks to some excellent VFX work. For anyone curious to see how they brought everything to life, including the giant spaceship and their activity inside of it, Oblique FX has released a demo reel highlighting their work. Another VFX company, called RodeoFX, has also launched a page with photos showing before-after shots. It’s amazing to see how much of this was filmed with blue screen, yet it feels so real. Seriously impressive. Always so cool to see these kind of VFX breakdowns for big sci-fi movies. ›››
