Review: Jordan Vogt-Roberts' 'Kong: Skull Island' is Awesomely Weird

    Kong: Skull Island

Kong is back, and the beast has never been this vicious. Since the 1933 classic, King Kong, the cinematic variations on the creature have been as varied as they are impressively crafted by the film world’s latest technology. The stories surrounding humans trekking to his home, Skull Island, have twirled about similar predicaments, though: they venture to the island, encounter the impressive Kong, kidnap him for display in the world of man. The giant ape deserves a shot of adrenaline, and it’s director Jordan Vogt-Roberts who has come in to deliver that shot. Kong: Skull Island is a thrilling entry into the storied franchise and not only in expected ways. With energetic pacing and breathtaking visuals the film satisfies on the typical levels, but Skull Island also drops in a bit of weirdness that easily sets it apart from modern monster movies. ›››

  • New Trailer for Indie Drama 'Buster's Mal Heart' Starring Rami Malek

New Trailer for Indie Drama 'Buster's Mal Heart' Starring Rami Malek

    Buster's Mal Heart

“Your version is coming.” A new trailer has debuted for a film titled Buster’s Mal Heart, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year (we featured a festival teaser for this last year). Directed by Sarah Adina Smith, the film stars Rami Malek as a “troubled man on the run from fate” who suffers from a recurring dream. In the dream he’s haunted by being lost at sea only to discover that the dream is real: He is one man in two bodies. The cast includes DJ Squalls, Kate Lyn Sheil, Lin Shaye, Toby Huss, Mark Kelly and Teresa Yenque. This sounds very intriguing, and it looks like it might be good, I’m definitely curious. I love the music in this trailer – odd but it works. Plus it’s always nice to see Malek in more films. Check it out. ›››

    Meet Walter Video

“The all-new Walter. Created to serve.” 20th Century Fox has revealed a brand new promo video for Alien: Covenant, introducing the newest version of the android made by Weyland-Yutani. The term used by the company is “synthetic”, and the character is again played by Michael Fassbender. In Prometheus, he was called David, but in this movie he’s known as Walter – so this video is all about meeting Walter. “Walter is the world’s most advanced synthetic companion, designed to help you achieve a better human experience. Each model is individually calibrated to serve its owner’s unique set of needs and preferences.” There’s a new website as well to custom build your own Walter. I like this marketing – it connects back to Prometheus and the marketing for David (and the TED Talk) and it’s a a very clever world-building concept. See below. ›››

  • First Trailer for Action Movie 'Atomic Blonde' Starring Charlize Theron

First Trailer for Action Movie 'Atomic Blonde' Starring Charlize Theron

    Atomic Blonde Trailer

“Find out who’s hunting down our operatives.” Focus Features has debuted an ass-kicking red band trailer for David Leitch’s Atomic Blonde, which is premiering at the SXSW Film Festival this weekend. Atomic Blonde stars Charlize Theron as an undercover MI6 agent (and/or assassin) sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent. This is directed by David Leitch, a stuntman who worked on co-directing John Wick (before he was uncredited) and he’s directing Deadpool 2 next. From this first trailer, it looks like they’re really pushing this as a female John Wick, with Theron kicking some ass all over Berlin. This actually looks damn good, it might end up being a big sleeper hit this year. Fire it up below. ›››

  • Official US Trailer for Thomas Vinterberg's New Film 'The Commune'

Official US Trailer for Thomas Vinterberg's New Film 'The Commune'

    The Commune Trailer

“I’m going to hold on to you for the rest of my life.” Magnolia Pictures has unveiled an official US trailer for a Danish drama titled The Commune, the latest film from Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg. This first premiered at last year’s Berlin Film Festival, and is just now getting a US release this summer more than a year later. The Commune is about exactly what the title says – a commune in Denmark in the 1970s. It plays with the idea of whether a commune, a collection of random people all living in one big house together, can actually work. The film’s ensemble cast includes Trine Dyrholm, Ulrich Thomsen, Helene Reingaard Neumann, Lars Ranthe, Julie Agnete Vang and Fares Fares. I saw this at Berlinale last year, and it’s pretty damn good, with some outstanding performances from the cast which make it better than it really is. ›››

Second Trailer for F. Gary Gray's 'The Fate of the Furious' Sequel Hits

The Fate of the Furious Trailer

“If you’re gunna catch Dom, you’re gunna need a little help.” One month to go. Universal has revealed a second trailer for The Fate of the Furious, or Fast & Furious 8, directed by F. Gary Gray (of Straight Outta Compton most recently). After the massive success of Furious 7 in 2015, this franchise continues to roll with Vin Diesel at the wheel. Also starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Scott Eastwood, Lucas Black, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Elsa Pataky, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, plus two newcomers: Helen Mirren, and Charlize Theron as the seductive “Cipher”. I’m still not really into this series. After the last one I expect them to be cheesy, but this is just crazy. The ice scene makes me think of Die Another Day, and that’s not a good thing. Enjoy anyway. ›››

Review: Jordan Vogt-Roberts' New 'Kong: Skull Island' Reigns Supreme

    Kong: Skull Island

In the entire history of cinema, only a few select films are so influential, so ingrained in our popular culture, that they become a modern myth. 1933’s King Kong, directed by Merian C. Cooper & Ernest B. Schoedsack, is one of those films. As the original effects-driven blockbuster and monster movie milestone, Kong has been re-imagined, parodied, and referenced countless times since first being unleashed more than eight decades ago. Each one of us has, at some point in our lives, encountered The Eighth Wonder of the World. Whether it’s a remake, like John Guillermin’s 1976 film, or Peter Jackson’s in 2005, or a reference made in The Simpsons, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, or Jurassic Park, the legend of the colossal ape endures. ›››

  • Official Trailer for 'The Transfiguration' from Director Michael O'Shea

Official Trailer for 'The Transfiguration' from Director Michael O'Shea

    The Transfiguration Trailer

“So what are vampires like?” Strand has unveiled a trailer for an indie film titled The Transfiguration, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year. This film is actually from America and is the feature debut of filmmaker Michael O’Shea, who tells a very odd vampire fable about a loner kid from Brooklyn who gets a taste for blood. Eric Ruffin stars, along with Chloe Levine as the young girl he befriends. It’s hard to really call this a vampire movie, because the vampire / drinking blood aspect of it is part of the plot in a mysterious way. Is he really a vampire? Or is it all in his mind? You’ll have to watch this to find out. I saw this film at Cannes last year and I didn’t really enjoy it that much, though I admire the filmmaking anyway. ›››

Trailer for Suburban Indie Comedy 'Little Boxes' with Melanie Lynskey

    Little Boxes Trailer

“This is our new community. Not everyone is a racist, Mack.” FilmBuff has debuted a trailer for an indie comedy titled Little Boxes, about an interracial couple that moves from New York City to a small, mostly white town in Washington State. This played at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, but this is the first time we’ve heard about it. The family is made up of Nelsan Ellis, Armani Jackson, and Melanie Lynskey, which seems like a spunky mix and there’s some good jokes in this trailer referencing exactly that. The full cast includes Oona Laurence (the girl from Pete’s Dragon), Janeane Garofalo, Christine Taylor, and Nadia Dajani. It looks fun, but that’s the most I can say, as some of the comedy seems a bit too contrived. ›››

One More Short Trailer for James Gray's Adventure 'The Lost City of Z'

The Lost City of Z Trailer

“Our reputation rests on my success… You and I are explorers now.” Another trailer for this epic adventure film before it hits theaters next month. The Lost City of Z tells the true story of a British explorer who travels to the Amazon in South America in search of a rumored city of gold hidden in the jungle. Starring Charlie Hunnam as legendary British explorer Col. Percy Fawcett, along with Tom Holland as Jack Fawcett and Sienna Miller as Nina Fawcett. The cast includes Robert Pattinson, Angus Macfadyen, Daniel Huttlestone, Edward Ashley and Johann Myers. The film follows Fawcett on three different journeys to the Amazon, each with renewed hope that they may finally find this city. It already played at NYFF and Berlinale, but has been receiving divisive reviews. If you’re into epic adventures, it’s worth seeing. ›››
