  • Emmanuelle Riva in Trailer for Abel & Gordon's Comedy 'Lost in Paris'

Emmanuelle Riva in Trailer for Abel & Gordon's Comedy 'Lost in Paris'

    Lost in Paris Trailer

“Will you dance with me?” Oscilloscope Labs has released an official US trailer for the whimsical, quirky comedy Lost in Paris, made by (and starring) the filmmakers Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon, known as “Abel & Gordon”. This actually has the feel of a comedy made by Wes Anderson if he was French, with a overtly charming and amusing visual style along with absurd but entertaining humor. Emmanuelle Riva, who passed away earlier this year, plays Aunt Martha, who sends a letter to her niece which prompts her to travel to Paris to find out what’s going on. There, she gets in all kinds of trouble and meets a lovable goofball named Dom, as played by Abel & Gordon. This looks surprisingly unique and totally fun to watch. ›››

    The Merciless Trailer

“The moral of this story is don’t trust people. Trust the circumstances.” A slick teaser trailer has launched recently for a new Korean action thriller film playing at the Cannes Film Festival this month. Titled The Merciless, the film tells the story of two people who try to work their way up to the top of a major crime organization in Korea. They initially partner while in prison, but discover there’s more going on with each of them once they get out. Starring Seol Gyeong-gu and Yim Si-wan. This is playing the midnight category at Cannes, which is where a few good Korean films first show up before making their way to America. Enjoy. ›››

  • Review: Ridley Scott's 'Alien: Covenant' is a Miscalculated Sci-Fi Misfire

Review: Ridley Scott's 'Alien: Covenant' is a Miscalculated Sci-Fi Misfire

    Alien: Covenant

In 1977, director Ridley Scott made his feature debut with The Duelist, which won the Best First Film Award at the Cannes Film Festival. His next film, 1979’s Alien, catapulted Sigourney Weaver to stardom and would go on to be considered one of the best sci-fi films of all time. A thriller about an extraterrestrial organism that stalks the crew of a spaceship, Alien launched a mega-franchise of movies, novels, comic books, video games, and collectibles that remains a pop culture mainstay nearly 40 years later. In 2010, Scott decided to return to the universe he helped create with Prometheus, a prequel to Alien that would explore the origins of the franchise’s iconic Xenomorph creature, as well as the “space jockey”—the giant, elephantine extraterrestrial that briefly appears in the film as the deceased pilot of a derelict spaceship. ›››

  • Watch: The End of a Relationship in Short Film 'Closure' by Dan Marcus

Watch: The End of a Relationship in Short Film 'Closure' by Dan Marcus

    Closure Short Film

“Just put on an old record… helps loosen the mind.” A new short film to watch this week that will make you think about your own relationship. This is titled Closure, and it’s the latest short directed by filmmaker Dan Marcus, who also happens to write for this site (see his work here). Dan previously directed the sci-fi thriller short titled Streamline, which we featured back in 2014 when it first premiered. He followed that film up with this one, a passion project about two young lovers at the end of their relationship. It’s about when two people know the ending is near but they can’t bring themselves to face that reality. This is a bit longer than a normal short, but it’s worth getting into for a good story about the challenges of relationships. ›››

  • First Groovy Trailer for Grateful Dead Documentary 'Long Strange Trip'

First Groovy Trailer for Grateful Dead Documentary 'Long Strange Trip'

    Long Strange Trip Trailer

“We’re the same as you, you’re the same as us.” Get ready to rock ‘n roll! Amazon Studios has debuted a full-length trailer for the documentary Long Strange Trip, an extensive look into the history and music of the iconic rock band known as the Grateful Dead. “Artfully assembling candid interviews with the band, road crew, family members and notable Deadheads,” director Amir Bar-Lev “reveals the untold history of the Dead and the freewheeling psychedelic subculture that sprouted up around it.” Featuring interviews and footage of Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir; and executive produced by Martin Scorsese. There’s lots of footage from their concerts, plus never-before-seen interviews and photos for Dead Heads (and newbies) to enjoy. This premiered at Sundance and also played at SXSW and seems like another definitive music doc for everyone to appreciate, even if you’re not the biggest fan. Dive right in. ›››

  • A Fight For Freedom – Final Trailer for 'War for the Planet of the Apes'

A Fight For Freedom – Final Trailer for 'War for the Planet of the Apes'

War for the Planet of the Apes Trailer

“I refuse to accept the end of man.” 20th Century Fox has revealed one final trailer for the new War for the Planet of the Apes movie, directed again by Matt Reeves, continuing (and likely ending) this latest trilogy of Apes movies. The last trailer for this is one of my favorite trailers this year so far, and this movie is most #1 most anticipated of the year (followed by Blade Runner 2049, The Last Jedi, and Dunkirk). Andy Serkis returns to play Caesar, and the cast includes Woody Harrelson as his adversary, the Colonel. Also starring Judy Greer as Cornelia, Max Lloyd-Jones as Blue Eyes, plus Steve Zahn, Chad Rook, Ty Olsson, Aleks Paunovic and Sara Canning. I’m completely sold on this movie already, so I don’t need to see any more. But this is an superb trailer that plays up the epic feeling of this man vs ape war. Must watch. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Safdie Bros' 'Good Time' Starring Robert Pattinson

Official Trailer for Safdie Bros' 'Good Time' Starring Robert Pattinson

    Good Time Trailer

“Are you feeling this?!” A24 has unveiled the first official trailer for the film Good Time, from directors Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie, the brothers behind the films Heaven Knows What and Daddy Longlegs. This film is debuting at the Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off this week, which is also why this trailer is being released to connect to the upcoming premiere in France at the festival. Robert Pattinson stars as “Connie”, a wild kid in New York who gets even deeper into the crime world in an effort to get his brother out of jail. This trailer does a nice job of introducing the story and setting up everything, so dive right in. Also starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, Barkhad Abdi, & Benny Safdie (as Connie’s brother). This looks like it has an exceptional performance from Pattinson, so at least there’s that to look out for in here. Enjoy. ›››

  • Teaser Trailer for 'It Came From the Desert' Movie About Giant Ants

Teaser Trailer for 'It Came From the Desert' Movie About Giant Ants

It Came From the Desert Trailer

“We’re trapped by this giant ant!” File this one under “Wait, this film really exists?!” Roger! Pictures out of Finland has launched the first trailer for a movie called It Came From the Desert, adapted from a video game in the 1980s about giant ants. The game is obviously inspired by the sci-fi classic Them! (also about giant ants) and thus this is clearly an updated version of the giant ant sci-fi story. Sadly, it looks more like a SyFy movie than anything I’m excited to see, but maybe I should’ve expected that. This film stars Mark Arnold, Harry Lister Smith, Vanessa Grasse, Alex Mills, James Alper, Claudia Trujillo, Callum McGowan, and Aino Sirje. The coolest part in this is the first reveal of someone being impaled through the chest, but the ants themselves look terrible. Hopefully they’re much better in the final version. Have fun. ›››

  • First Trailer for Finnish Superhero Movie 'Rendel' Made by Jesse Haaja

First Trailer for Finnish Superhero Movie 'Rendel' Made by Jesse Haaja

    Rendel Movie Trailer

“What the hell is Rendel?” The first official trailer has arrived online for a Finnish, futuristic superhero film titled Rendel, which is the name of the masked superhero character that it’s about. Created by the film’s director, Jesse Haaja, Rendel is a “faceless” superhero fighting against the VALA criminal organization in the “cold dystopia” of a fictionalized version of a Finnish city called Mikkeli. This “superhero story” is a bit darker and grittier than what we see out of Hollywood, but still has some of the same tropes of the genre. Starring Finnish actor Kristofer Gummerus as Rendel, along with Matti Onnismaa, Minttu Tamski, Roosa-Maria Makinen, Alina Tomnikov, Bianca Bradey, and Johnny Vivash. This looks it could be cool, but I’m also a bit worried it might also be straight-to-VHS level terrible. Check out the footage below. ›››
