“I enjoy being a highly overpaid actor.” He was the James Bond that I grew up with, and adored even more than Sean Connery. We’re sad to report that English actor Sir Roger Moore has passed away today at age 89. His death was announced by his family on Twitter after Moore had an unsuccessful battle with cancer. Moore’s last Bond movie was A View to a Kill in 1985, and ever since then he has been appearing in various smaller roles but nothing too big, including a few appearances as himself in movies like Incompatibles and The Carer. Moore was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003 for “services to charity”, and also became a UNICEF ambassador in his later years. He starred in a total of seven James Bond movies from 1973 to 1985. ›››

“Want your wish granted?” You know what, I don’t think I do. Broad Green Pictures has debuted on final trailer for the horror film Wish Upon, arriving in theaters this summer after being delayed for a few months. We’ve already seen a few other trailers before, and this one just rehashes all that same footage, so you should know what to expect by now (including most of the kills). The plot is about a high school girl who finds a mysterious, magical box that grants her wishes – mostly to get revenge on those bullying her. But she must pay the price when her requests turn into nightmares. Joey King (from The Conjuring, White House Down) stars, also with Sherilyn Fenn, Ryan Phillippe, Elisabeth Röhm, Shannon Purser, Ki Hong Lee, Sydney Park and Alice Lee. As much as this seems like a cool horror concept, I’ll likely pass on this. ›››

“You’ve seen too much.” Check out the first official English-language trailer for a cool French animated film titled Zombillenium, about a horror amusement park run by monsters. The film is actually playing at the Cannes Film Festival this month, which is a good sign this might be worth catching. Directed by Arthur de Pins & Alexis Ducord, the story is about a father who decides to work at the Zombillenium in order to make his daughter happy. The theme park is secretly run by zombies, vampires, werewolves and other monsters. It’s based on a series of comic books written by Arthur de Pin. I really like the animation style in this, and it seems like a fun, funky story. It might be perfect for an October release for Halloween, but nothing is set yet. ›››

The master provocateur returns again and he’s definitely going to rattle some cages with this film, there’s no doubt about it. Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos has unveiled his latest film at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, titled The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and it’s some seriously creepy, unsettling stuff. I don’t want to give away too much, but the film is a Kubrickian psychological horror about a family which plays out in the most chilling, disturbing way. It will get under your skin, it will make you feel icky, it will upset you, and test your limits. Some people are going to hate this film, just hate it, while others are going to love it, and laugh with it, and enjoy every second of it. But that’s the skill of a great filmmaker – making you feel things that maybe you don’t want to feel, and challenging you to either accept or reject the ideas they’re presenting. ›››

“She’s what they call nowadays a ‘mean girl’.” Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for the film Austin Found, a comedy about a fame-obsessed single mother who tries to pull off a fake kidnapping in order to get attention. Actress Linda Cardellini stars as Leanne, who is bored with her “unglamorously average lifestyle” and recruits her ex-boyfriend and his ex-con friend to put this plan together and have her daughter go missing for a few months. The cast includes Urusula Parker as her daughter Patty, along with Kirsten Schaal, Craig Robinson, Skeet Ulrich, Patrick Warburton, Jon Daly, Chris Parnell, and Matt Jones. This looks crazy stupid, but perhaps that is the point, it’s a comedy about how stupid people can be sometimes all in pursuit of fame and fortune and glory. But I recommend Ingrid Goes West instead. ›››

“Sometimes it was 8 cans in a day. It was way, way too much.” Stop drinking soda! It’s very bad for your health. How many of you are addiction to pop/soda? In America, it’s a very common thing, as we all grow up drinking it and enjoy it so much that we can’t help but enjoy soda all the time. This animated short film, titled Coke Habit, tells the story of one man named Mike explaining how his addiction to soda became a major problem when he was in high school. This is indeed a very important health PSA, but it’s also a very creative and unique short film with some impressive animation. I love the color palette, and I love how it all flows. It’s short, sweet (no pun intended) and good work I want to share as filmmaking that impressed me. ›››

Sometimes there’s a film that is so delightful, so cheerful, full of so much optimism and happiness and joy, that it completely changes your mood. You can be upset, or tired, or whatever, and by the end of this film you’re so happy. Nothing will take that happiness away. Everything you just saw was perfect and wonderful. That’s how I felt with this film at the Cannes Film Festival, called Visages, Villages, which translates to Faces, Places in English. The film is a documentary made by 88-year-old filmmaker Agnès Varda and the 34-year-old French photographer known as “JR“. They not only directed it, but it’s about their unlikely friendship and collaboration on a road trip around France taking photos of people they meet along the way. ›››

Oh my goodness, I love Ruben Östlund. He’s quickly becoming one of my favorite filmmakers. Not only for the way he shoots his films – the iconic cinematography, the music used throughout, the way he blocks his scenes – but also the way he tells such radical, hilarious, brutally honest stories about our society (and all the problems with it). I flipped for his last film Force Majeure, which I also caught at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014. Östlund’s latest feature film is a brilliant satire called The Square, set around a modern art museum in Stockholm, Sweden. The film mocks not only modern art and the entire art world, but pretty much everything else in society, including our perceived notions of helpfulness, free speech, shameless publicity tactics, the internet and “going viral”, and our seemingly good intentions as people in this world. ›››

“Nearly every rider was on drugs!” Another hilarious new sports mockumentary from HBO. The first teaser trailer has debuted for Tour De Pharmacy, an amusing documentary set in the early 1980s about the “dark and fictitious time in cycling history”. Directed by the same filmmaker who brought us HBO’s sports comedy 7 Days in Hell, he reteams with Andy Samberg to make fun of doping in cycling. The film focuses on five cyclists in 1982 as they dealt with nearly every athlete doping during the cycling competitions. Aside from Samberg, the full cast includes John Cena, Freddie Highmore, Daveed Diggs, Orlando Bloom, and a whole bunch of others. I’m not even sure if all the names they flash in this teaser are even in the film? Plus there’s an appearance by Lance Armstrong, a smart move to get him to make fun of doping, too. Enjoy. ›››

“The ball was on the line!” How about another tennis match movie this week? The first teaser trailer has arrived for a film titled Borg/McEnroe, profiling (and recreating) the iconic 1980 tennis match between Björn Borg and John McEnroe. The match would go down in history as one of the greatest Wimbledon finals ever. Unlike the other tennis movie Battle of the Sexes, this one isn’t a comedy, it’s much more of a drama looking at the rivalry between these two tennis titans. Shia LaBeouf plays John McEnroe, and Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason plays Björn Borg, with a cast including Stellan Skarsgård, Tuva Novotny, and David Bamber. This actually looks pretty good, I’m curious to see more footage from this. See below. ›››
