Watch: 80s-Inspired Fantasy Adventure Short Film 'The Spirit Machine'

    The Spirit Machine Short Film

“Its been missing for 100 years…” Shall we go searching for Thomas Edison’s “last” invention? The Spirit Machine is an excellent low budget fantasy adventure short film made by filmmaker Timothy Plain. The story is about a father and daughter who go on a search for a long, lost turn-of-the century Edison device (called The Spirit Machine). There’s an impressive amount of backstory to this, and a good introduction that makes it captivating to follow as it plays out. Starring Andrea Ferreyra and Will Springhorn Jr. This has been described as “Indiana Jones meets The Prestige“, and inspired by 80s classics like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Poltergeist. It’s not perfect, but I admire the ambition and the VFX are great. Fire it up below. ›››

Teaser Trailer for Surprise 4th 'Hatchet' Horror Titled 'Victor Crowley'

    Victor Crowley Trailer

“It’s coming for all of us.” Surprise – he’s back! A teaser trailer has debuted for a brutal slasher horror titled Victor Crowley, which is the name of the villain in the Hatchet series of horror movies. Victor Crowley is indeed the fourth Hatchet movie, made in secret by filmmaker Adam Green, the same guy who started the series back in 2006. Set a decade after the events of the first three films, the story follows the one-and-only survivor who has been trying to get people to believe his story for years. But he ends up back at the place where it all started, and Crowley is mistakenly resurrected. Starring Kane Hodder and Parry Shen, along with Laura Ortiz, Dave Sheridan, and Brian Quinn. Bloody Disgusting (who premiered the trailer) also just reviewed the film, saying it’s “the Gory Slasher Film You’re Craving!” Yes, it looks brutal and very gory. ›››

  • First Trailer for Oil Fields Indie 'Boomtown' Featuring Dwight Yoakam

First Trailer for Oil Fields Indie 'Boomtown' Featuring Dwight Yoakam

    Boomtown Trailer

“Have you ever been to North Dakota?” The Orchard has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie drama titled Boomtown, set in the oil fields of North Dakota. This fictional story follows John ‘JT’ Turner, played by Tyler Riggs, who leaves his family and his hometown to travel up to Williston and work in the booming oil industry. His journey is filled with setbacks and great challenges as documented in this portrayal of the relentless pursuit of the American Dream (e.g. make a lot of money doing crappy hard work). The full cast includes Boyd Holbrook, Rachel Brosnahan, Dwight Yoakam, and Jocelin Donahue. This reminds me to recommend, once again, one of the best documentaries I’ve seen in years – The Overnighters – which was filmed in/around Williston. This looks solid, without any over-dramatized aspects, thankfully. Check it. ›››

  • One Final Red Band Trailer for 'Tulip Fever' Featuring Alicia Vikander

One Final Red Band Trailer for 'Tulip Fever' Featuring Alicia Vikander

    Tulip Fever Trailer

“Seduction is a dangerous art.” In a very strange, desperate, last minute move The Weinstein Company has debuted one more new sex-filled red band trailer for the romantic drama Tulip Fever, which has had so many release delays I don’t think anyone even care anymore. This film is going to crash and burn, and no one is going to see it, which is fine because these trailers show enough. Alicia Vikander stars as a Dutch woman married to a rich and powerful merchant, played by Christoph Waltz, who begins an affair with a painter, played by Dane DeHaan. Set in 17th Century Amsterdam, this also stars: Holliday Grainger, Jack O’Connell, Zach Galifianakis, Dame Judi Dench, Matthew Morrison, Tom Hollander and Cara Delevingne. I’m so tired of even writing posts about this movie, hopefully this is the very last time. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Yance Ford's Personal Documentary 'Strong Island'

Official Trailer for Yance Ford's Personal Documentary 'Strong Island'

    Strong Island Doc Trailer

“The police had turned my brother into the prime suspect in his own murder.” Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for Yance Ford’s powerful, personal documentary Strong Island, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It won a Special Jury Prize for Storytelling there, and went on to play at numerous other festivals throughout the world. Strong Island is a unique documentary, where the story is not only being told by the filmmaker, but is about the filmmaker, who is expressing his anger and pent-up frustration about the murder of his brother. “A deeply intimate and meditative film, Strong Island asks what one can do when the grief of loss is entwined with historical injustice, and how one grapples with the complicity of silence, which can bind a family in an imitation of life, and a nation with a false sense of justice.” If you’re a fan of innovative, challenging documentaries this is a must watch. • First Official Trailer for Snowy French Retro Horror Film 'Cold Ground'

First Official Trailer for Snowy French Retro Horror Film 'Cold Ground'

    Cold Ground Trailer

“The lucky ones freeze to death.” A trailer has debuted for the snowy indie horror titled Cold Ground, a creature feature about a team of documentary filmmakers who venture into the mountains. Set in the 1970s, the found footage story follows journalists who head to the French-Swiss border to investigate a strange case of cattle mutilations, but the scientific team they were supposed to meet is nowhere to be found. This is described as a retro horror that is like “The Blair Witch Project meets The Descent“, and it’s filmed to look like it was made in the 70s with Super 8 cameras. Starring Doug Rand, Philip Schurer, Gala Besson, Fabrice Pierre, and Maura Tillay. This looks very scary, here’s to hoping it’s as good as the quotes claim. ›››

  • Adam Scott Battles an Evil Child in First Trailer for Netflix's 'Little Evil'

Adam Scott Battles an Evil Child in First Trailer for Netflix's 'Little Evil'

    Little Evil Trailer

“There is nothing wrong with Lucas!” Netflix has released the official trailer for an indie horror comedy titled Little Evil, the latest from Eli Craig, director of the other great horror comedy Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Remember that one? We covered it closely when it opened back in 2010. Little Evil stars Adam Scott as a man who marries the woman of his dreams, played by Evangeline Lilly. The only problem is that her child is the antichrist. Also starring Bridget Everett, Clancy Brown, Tyler Labine, Donald Faison, Chris D’Elia, and Owen Atlas as Lucas. This looks good, don’t think we’ve seen many comedies making fun of the evil child horror trope, but I’m up for this. Glad to see something new from Eli Craig, too. Enjoy. ›››

  • Trailer for Michael Winterbottom's 'On The Road' Following Wolf Alice

Trailer for Michael Winterbottom's 'On The Road' Following Wolf Alice

    On The Road Doc Trailer

“That’s life on the road for you.” Lorton Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for a film titled On the Road, directed by Michael Winterbottom, not to be confused with the Jack Kerouac adaptation of On the Road from a few years back. This On the Road is a docu-drama that follows the British band Wolf Alice as they tour around the UK promoting their debut album, My Love Is Cool. Aside from documenting the ups and downs of life on the road, the story follows two people in particular: Estelle (played by Leah Harvey), an intern from the record label, and Joe (played by James McCardle), a member of the band’s “imagined” crew. They start up an intimate friendship, and of course get caught up in the tumult of touring. The film is mostly unscripted, and seems to capture the raw beauty and randomness of life and love. Dive in. ›››

Full US Trailer for Brazilian Coming-of-Age Horror Film 'Kill Me Please'

    Kill Me Please Trailer

“Remember what the pastor said: ‘Blood is life.’” Cinema Slate has revealed an official US trailer for an indie horror film from Brazil titled Kill Me Please (also just Mate-me por favor in Portuguese). The film is about a group of high school girls who waste their days wandering through the neighbor of Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro. When a series of murders begins to “terrorize the neighborhood” they develop a morbid curiosity with the victims, leading them to some dangerous places. Starring Valentina Herszage, Júlia Roliz, Mariana Oliveira, and Dora Freind as the four leading ladies. Kill Me Please is “partly inspired by the 1980s teen slasher genre” and is described as a “disturbing and funny dive into teenage sexuality, spirituality, loneliness and fragility.” This actually looks damn good, I’m looking forward to checking it out. ›››

New Extended TV Trailer for 'Blade Runner 2049' Shows Us the Future

    Blade Runner 2049 Trailer

“Replicants are the future of the species.” We’re only a few months away, strap in. Sony (who is distributing this internationally) has released a new extended TV spot which is essentially just a new trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049. We’ve already seen plenty of footage in the previous three trailers, but why not a bit more to whet our appetite? This direct sequel takes place 30 years after the original, and stars Ryan Gosling as a LAPD Officer who must find Deckard, who has been missing all this time. Harrison Ford returns to play Deckard, and the cast of 2049 includes Ana de Armas, Jared Leto, Dave Bautista, Mackenzie Davis, Robin Wright, Barkhad Abdi, Lennie James, and David Dastmalchian. After this trailer, I really don’t want to see anything else from this before watching it on the big screen. I’m ready. ›››
