First Official Trailer for Sci-Fi Thriller 'Replicas' Starring Keanu Reeves

    Replicas Trailer

“I’m on the verge of a breakthrough… I am this close.” Entertainment Studios has debuted an official trailer for a sci-fi thriller titled Replicas, starring Keanu Reeves as a mad scientists who tries to figure out how to bring back his family after they are killed in a car accident. There’s some kind of weird robot and lots of cool headgear that Reeves wears, but really is is about a synthetic biologist who attempts to clone his family members. The cast includes Alice Eve, Thomas Middleditch, Emily Alyn Lind, John Ortiz, Emjay Anthony, and Nyasha Hatendi. As much as I love sci-fi, and as much as I love Keanu Reeves, this looks pretty bad. The song is weird, and the whole film seems like an odd sci-fi mash-up that probably won’t work. ›››

Review: Villeneuve's 'Blade Runner 2049' is Emotionally Affecting, Artificially Intelligent

    Blade Runner 2049

Based on the Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Ridley Scott’s 1982 science fiction thriller, Blade Runner, introduced audiences to a dystopian future where synthetic humans, known as Replicants, are bio-engineered for use in off-world colonization. When these Replicants go rogue, special police units called Blade Runners hunt down and “retire” them. Despite its initial lukewarm critical and commercial reception, Blade Runner has become one of the most influential movies of the last 40 years, pioneering what became an entirely new genre: neo-noir cyberpunk. 35 years later, thanks to subsequent releases like the 1992 Director’s Cut and the definitive 2007 Final Cut, Scott’s film is now heralded as a groundbreaking visionary masterpiece and one of the most important motion pictures ever made. ›››

  • New US Trailer for Powerful, Inspiring French Activism Film '120 BPM'

New US Trailer for Powerful, Inspiring French Activism Film '120 BPM'

    120 BPM Trailer

“Our friends are dying. Fight! Fight!” IFC Films has unveiled a new US trailer for a French film titled 120 BPM, also known as BPM (Beats Per Minute) in America, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. I am a big fan of this film, it’s an emotional, powerful, inspiring recreation of the true story of a group of AIDS activists in the 90s fighting for medicine & support against indifference & intolerance. The film won the Grand Prix Jury Prize at Cannes, as well as the FIPRESCI Prize. “A film about love. A film about life. Life stronger than death. A film as a glimpse of hope.” 120 BPM’s ensemble cast includes Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, Arnaud Valois, Adèle Haenel, Antoine Reinartz, Félix Maritaud, Médhi Touré, Aloïse Sauvage, Simon Bourgade, and Catherine Vinatier. This film is definitely worth your time. ›››

  • Interview: Denis Villeneuve on the Task of Crafting 'Blade Runner 2049'

Interview: Denis Villeneuve on the Task of Crafting 'Blade Runner 2049'

    Denis Villeneuve

“It’s the multiplication of brains and [all] the people that you have to tune to make sure that they are all dreaming in the same direction.” He’s a master filmmaker and continues to deliver some of the best films of this decade – Denis Villeneuve. Born in Quebec, Villeneuve has been an acclaimed filmmaker for many years but finally got his foot into Hollywood’s door after making Incendies in 2010. He followed that up with Prisoners, as well as Enemy released the same year, before making Sicario and Arrival. His latest is Blade Runner 2049, a highly anticipated, long-awaited sequel to the sci-fi cult hit from 1982 starring Harrison Ford as a cop named Deckard. I didn’t get to chat with Villeneuve for Arrival last year (it was one of my favorite films), so I chased him this time for Blade Runner and got to spend a few minutes talking with him. ›››

  • First Trailer for Mathieu Turi's Post-Apocalyptic Creature Film 'Hostile'

First Trailer for Mathieu Turi's Post-Apocalyptic Creature Film 'Hostile'

    Hostile Trailer

“My name is Juliette, and I survived the apocalypse. You think I’m lucky? You’re wrong.” A trailer has debuted for an intriguing post-apocalyptic creature feature titled Hostile, the feature directorial debut of French filmmaker Mathieu Turi. Not to be confused with the Christian Bale western Hostiles, this one is about a woman who is the lone survivor of an apocalypse and ends up crashing her truck driving around. She wakes up at night, and must battle strange creatures that roam the wastelands in the dark. The cast includes Grégory Fitoussi, Javier Botet , Jay Benedict, and David Gasman. This kind of looks like I Am Legend if it was set in a dusty wasteland instead of the city. This actually looks pretty good. Check it out. ›››

Up Next – Sitges Film Festival in Spain & London Film Festival in UK

    Sitges Film Festival

The fall film festival season rages on…! Up next are two more film festivals in Europe. I’m stopping by the Sitges Film Festival in Spain, a prestigious genre/horror festival celebrating its 50th year. And then I’m heading up to London to catch the second half of the London Film Festival, celebrating its 64th year. Both festivals kick off this week and continue through next week for a total of 10 days (I love that festivals continue to run for 10 days, it’s always invigorating to stay and watch films for that long). This is my first time attending both festivals, which makes me anxious but it’s also exciting. Attending a film festival for the first time is always daunting, but once I figure everything out and settle in for screenings, all is well again. ›››

  • Denzel Washington in Full Trailer for Dan Gilroy's 'Roman J Israel, Esq'

Denzel Washington in Full Trailer for Dan Gilroy's 'Roman J Israel, Esq'

    Roman J Israel, Esq. Trailer

“I’m tired of doing the impossible for the ungrateful.” Sony has debuted the first trailer for Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy’s new film, Roman J Israel, Esq., which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival to fairly negative reviews unfortunately. This is the film that stars Denzel Washington as an overweight Los Angeles lawyer with an afro, fighting for justice in a troubled legal system that fights back. Also starring Colin Farrell, Shelley Hennig, Carmen Ejogo, Nazneen Contractor, Tony Plana, and Niles Fitch. All the early photos from this definitely got my attention, but the bad buzz out of TIFF (saying it’s a mess that doesn’t amount to much) has deflated my interests just a bit. I’m still curious about seeing it, and the footage in this trailer actually looks promising. I’m actually more hopeful now, thankfully. Fire it up below. ›››

    Molly's Game Trailer

“In this room, you couldn’t buy your win, you couldn’t buy me, and you couldn’t buy a seat at the table.” STX Entertainment has debuted the second trailer for Molly’s Game, the directorial debut of screenwriter Aaron Sorkin. Sorkin directs from his own script telling the true story of a woman named Molly Bloom, adapted from her memoir. Jessica Chastain plays Molly, a young Olympic-class skier from Colorado who ran the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents. This also stars Idris Elba, Chris O’Dowd, Kevin Costner, Michael Cera, Natalie Krill, Joe Keery, Bill Camp, and plenty of others. This is a very lively, captivating trailer that will definitely make you want to see this film. Along with great reviews from TIFF, I’m ready to see this now. ›››

  • Romance Brews in Official Trailer for 'Porto' Starring Anton Yelchin

Romance Brews in Official Trailer for 'Porto' Starring Anton Yelchin

    Porto Trailer

“No, please, don’t do anything differently…” Kino Lorber has unveiled an official trailer for the romantic drama Porto, about two strangers who meet randomly for an evening of intimacy in the Portuguese city of Porto. The film stars the late Anton Yelchin in one of his final roles (along with the films Rememory and Thoroughbreds) as Jake, who meets the lovely Mati, played by Lucie Lucas. The cast also includes Paulo Calatré and Françoise Lebrun. This already premiered at the San Sebastian Film Festival last year, and has played at numerous film festivals through 2016 and 2017, with a release in the US this November. This actually reminds me a bit of Drake Doremus’ intimate romance film Newness, which also had a trailer today. ›››

  • Glenn Close & Christina Hendricks in First Trailer for 'Crooked House'

Glenn Close & Christina Hendricks in First Trailer for 'Crooked House'

    Crooked House Trailer

“What are murderers like?” “You, me, everyone.” Sony Pictures has unveiled a trailer for Crooked House, adapted from Agatha Christie’s 1949 novel of the same name. Max Irons stars as Charles Hayward, spy-turned-private-detective who is invited to help solve a gruesome, mysterious death of a wealthy patriarch. Nobody is above suspicion, including Sophia, his client and former lover. The powerhouse ensemble cast includes Glenn Close, Stefanie Martini, Christina Hendricks, Gillian Anderson, Julian Sands, Christian McKay, Amanda Abbington, and Terence Stamp. This looks like it could be a good double feature with this year’s remake of Murder on the Orient Express, especially since they are both Agatha Christie adaptations. There’s some strong performances featured here, might be worth a look. Check it out. ›››
