Too Funny to Fail Doc Trailer

“We had hired badass nerd pirates to blow up the system.” Hulu has debuted a trailer for a documentary titled Too Funny to Fail, looking back at the short-lived comedy show “The Dana Carvey Show“. Does anyone remember this show? Dana Carvey’s “The Dana Carvey Show” launched in spring of 1996 and only lasted 7 episodes before it was cancelled. This doc examines how it all happened, how it came together, and how it all went wrong. It features Carvey and former Carvey Show cast members/writers Stephen Colbert, Robert Smigel, Steve Carell, Louis C.K., Charlie Kaufman, Jon Glaser, and more in a look back at why the ABC sketch show would “crash and burn so spectacularly.” The show had such an amazing set of writers and comedians, it’s fascinating to examine its failure. Hulu also has all the episodes available for you to watch. ›››

  • LFF Review: Paddy Considine's 'Journeyman' is an Emotional Journey

LFF Review: Paddy Considine's 'Journeyman' is an Emotional Journey

    Journeyman Review

This is not a boxing film. Though it is about a boxer, and involves a major boxing match, it is not a boxing film. Journeyman, the latest feature written and directed by English actor Paddy Considine, is actually a heartwrenching drama about the struggle of those with mental disabilities. Considine plays every role – he writes, directs, and stars in this film as Matty Burton, a famed boxer who decides to go for one last match with a wise-mouth up-and-comer. This film is really not about how the match turns out, that doesn’t really even matter, and while we do get to watch the match, it is what comes after that matters. That’s what this film is actually about, and it is an impressive, emotional journey through one man’s struggle to stay himself. ›››

  • Taraji P. Henson in First Trailer for Tyler Perry's Next Drama 'Acrimony'

Taraji P. Henson in First Trailer for Tyler Perry's Next Drama 'Acrimony'

    Acrimony Trailer

“So, do you think you have an anger problem?” Lionsgate has revealed the first trailer for Tyler Perry’s next drama, an infidelity thriller starring Taraji P. Henson called Acrimony. The word acrimony is actually a noun meaning “bitterness or ill feeling.” It connects to the plot here, because Henson plays a woman tired of standing by her husband who continues to lie and cheat on her. Lyriq Bent plays her husband, with a cast including Danielle Nicolet, Jazmyn Simon, Tika Sumpter, Jason Vail, and Ptosha Storey. The film seems to be told through flashbacks, with Henson retelling her story of how she first met him and all the abuse she has quietly received over the years, before turning vicious and vengeful. This doesn’t look so bad. ›››

  • First Teaser Trailer for Festival Hit 'I, Tonya' Starring Margot Robbie

First Teaser Trailer for Festival Hit 'I, Tonya' Starring Margot Robbie

    I, Tonya Teaser Trailer

“America: they want someone to love, they want someone to hate.” Neon has revealed a short teaser trailer for the indie dark comedy I, Tonya, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival to lots of rave reviews. I, Tonya, the latest from director Craig Gillespie, tells a fictionalized version of the true story of figure skater Tonya Harding, who planned an attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan after a practice session at the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit. Margot Robbie stars as Tonya Harding, with a cast including Sebastian Stan, Allison Janney, Paul Walter Hauser, Julianne Nicholson, Bobby Cannavale, Mckenna Grace, plus Caitlin Carver as Nancy Kerrigan. Based on all the buzz from TIFF and this first look, I am crazy excited to see this film. Sounds like it’s dark and devious and enjoyable in all the right ways. ›››

  • Official Trailer for Indie Film 'Princess Cyd' from Director Stephen Cone

Official Trailer for Indie Film 'Princess Cyd' from Director Stephen Cone

    Princess Cyd Trailer

“It is not a handicap to have one thing, but not another…” Wolfe Releasing has debuted the first official trailer for Stephen Cone’s latest film Princess Cyd, a light coming-of-age comedy set mostly in Chicago. The story follows a young 16-year-old woman who goes to spend the summer with her novelist aunt at her home in Chicago’s suburbs, discovering her sexual attraction to another girl in the neighborhood. Newcomer Jessie Pinnick stars as Cyd, and the cast includes Rebecca Spence, Malic White, James Vincent Meredith, Tyler Ross, and Matthew Quattrocki. I caught this just recently at the London Film Festival, and while it is solid overall, none of it really impressed me and it doesn’t have anything unique to say at the end. There’s so many other better films exactly like this, but it’s also not that bad either. Take a look below. ›››

  • Chris Hemsworth Rides a Horse into War in First Trailer for '12 Strong'

Chris Hemsworth Rides a Horse into War in First Trailer for '12 Strong'

    12 Strong Trailer

“There’s no playbook here…” Warner Bros has unveiled the first trailer for their movie called 12 Strong, formerly known as Horse Soldiers. The full title (which explains the plot) is: 12 Strong: The Declassified True Story Of The Horse Soldiers. It’s about a team of Special Forces soldiers sent into Afghanistan at the beginning of the war after 9/11. They end up working with a local Afghani warlord in order to take down the Taliban, riding horses into battle (like they used to do hundreds of years ago). Chris Hemsworth stars, along with an ensemble cast including Taylor Sheridan, Michael Shannon, Austin Stowell, Michael Peña, Geoff Stults, and Elsa Pataky. This looks like pretty much every other modern war movie, but with a twist, though it’s still about good ole American soldiers risking their lives to keep the country safe & free. ›››

  • New 'Ward and Jakoby' Featurette for David Ayer's 'Bright' from Netflix

New 'Ward and Jakoby' Featurette for David Ayer's 'Bright' from Netflix

    Bright

“Listen – this is happening.” Netflix has debuted an extended behind-the-scenes featurette for David Ayer’s new film Bright, specifically focusing on the two main cops – Daryl Ward and Nick Jakoby, played by Will Smith and Joel Edgerton (respectively). Ward and Jakoby are very different cops who are put together as partners on the beat in Los Angeles. The film also stars Noomi Rapace, Kenneth Choi, Brad William Henke, Lucy Fry, Edgar Ramírez, Ike Barinholtz, Brandon Larracuente, and Dawn Olivieri. This video plays like an extended trailer half the time, and has some behind-the-scenes glimpses at the end as well. So, this film continues to impress me, I’m looking forward to seeing this when it arrives on Netflix. ›››

  • Shot on Film Featurette for Branagh's 'Murder on the Orient Express'

Shot on Film Featurette for Branagh's 'Murder on the Orient Express'

Murder on the Orient Express Featurette

“We wanted to bring the full experience to the audience, so I shot on film.” 20th Century Fox has unveiled a featurette for Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express, the murder mystery set on a luxurious European train. Branagh did indeed decide to shoot this on film, using 65mm for some scenes. This video is too short to dive into everything, but does have a few cool behind-the-scenes shots. Starring Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penélope Cruz, Daisy Ridley, Josh Gad, Willem Dafoe, Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Tom Bateman, Lucy Boynton, Olivia Colman, Miranda Raison, and Derek Jacobi. It’s impressive to see they used a real train for a few shots, and I like the interior sets on a soundstage with screens down the side projecting what’s out outside. This does seem like it’s going to look stunning, at least. ›››

  • First Trailer for A24's 'The Ballad of Lefty Brown' Starring Bill Pullman

First Trailer for A24's 'The Ballad of Lefty Brown' Starring Bill Pullman

    The Ballad of Lefty Brown

“Chase down Eddie’s killer, then bring him back.” A24 has debuted a trailer for western drama The Ballad of Lefty Brown, from filmmaker Jared Moshe, which first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival this year. Bill Pullman stars as washed-up sidekick Lefty Brown, who watches his longtime friend/partner murdered before his eyes. He decides to go after the killer, rallying a group of people to support him, including an old, experienced gunhand and a young cowboy. The full cast includes Kathy Baker, Jim Caviezel, Tommy Flanagan, Diego Josef, and Joe Anderson, with an appearance by Peter Fonda as Lefty’s murdered friend. This looks damn good, a moody revenge western with some real grit. Pullman seems great as always. ›››
