Keith Stanfield & Gregory Kasyan in First Trailer for 'Quest' Graffiti Film

    Quest Trailer

“So what’s it about?” “Leaving a mark, getting respect.” A trailer has debuted for a new indie drama titled Quest, a story about a young kid who loves tagging and graffiti, and meets a friend who might help guide him in life. Young actor Gregory Kasyan stars as Mills, a 12 year old graffiti addict who is losing faith in integrity. His home life is mess with an abusive dad and a mom who doesn’t believe him. His school life isn’t much better. A sympathetic teacher and champion of at risk kids enters his life. Co-starring Dash Mihok, Keith Stanfield, Lou Diamond Phillips, Betsy Brandt, Sepideh Moafi, Marlyne Barrett, Allen Maldonado, and Karen Kahn. This is premiering at a few film festivals this fall, but otherwise hasn’t made much of an impact yet. Looks like it could be a cool low-key indie about the art of graffiti. Check it out. ›››

    Mr. Roosevelt Trailer

“How can you let her do this to me?! She’s try to make me look bad!” An official trailer has debuted for the film Mr. Roosevelt, which won the Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival this year. Written, directed by, and starring actress-turned-filmmaker Noël Wells, this indie romantic comedy is about a woman who returns to her hometown of Austin, TX and encounters her ex-boyfriend, who is now living with his new girlfriend in their old house. She has to comes to term with the situation and her own life, while dealing with her ex’s new girlfriend who seems to be pretty much perfect. The cast includes Nick Thune, Britt Lower, Daniella Pineda, Andre Hyland, Doug Benson, Sergio Cilli, and Paul Gordon. This looks funky and quirky and totally indie. Perhaps even too indie, but oh well. Looks like it’s best to see at a film festival. ›››

Meet the New Kids – First Teaser Trailer for 'X-Men: The New Mutants'

    X-Men: The New Mutants

“Do you know what mutants are?” 20th Century Fox has unveiled the first teaser trailer for the new X-Men movie, this one title New Mutants, based on the spin-off comic series about a group of young mutants. Instead of continuing on with the X-Men superheroes we all know from the series of movies, Fox is trying something a bit different with a new group – starring Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, and Blu Hunt as Mirage. Also starring Alice Braga and Happy Anderson. So far this looks very horrific, yet still seemingly aimed at younger audiences, with the director of The Fault in Our Stars at the helm. This is our very first look, it’s worth a watch. Not at all what you’re expecting, way more of a horror than an X-Men movie, but it looks intriguing. ›››

LFF Review: Chloé Zhao's 'The Rider' is an Assured, Emotional Drama

    The Rider

What place does a broken cowboy have in this modern world? The Rider is a gem that will reward those patient enough to discover it. Filmmaker Chloé Zhao tells a story of an injured cowboy in contemporary times who has to deal with the trials and tribulations of life, all the while yearning to get back to the rodeo. This film won an award after first premiering the Cannes Film Festival, and I finally caught up with it at the London Film Festival. I wasn’t expecting to be so moved, so overwhelmed with emotions, yet I was wiping away tears by the end of the screening. Whenever a film hits me that hard and leave me sobbing by the end, that’s usually a sign it’s something special. This is one of those outstanding films to seek out and discover. ›››

LFF Review: Brett Morgen's 'Jane' Documentary is Sublime & Inspiring

    Jane Documentary Review

Oh my do I love this documentary. It’s as close to perfection as any film can get, and it will fill you with hope and happiness. Jane is a documentary made by filmmaker Brett Morgen (of The Kid Stays in the Picture, Chicago 10, Cobain: Montage of Heck) that’s about the groundbreaking work of animal lover and activist Jane Goodall. As we all know, Goodall went out in the jungles of Africa in the 1960s and 1970s and lived with chimpanzees, studying them and observing how closely related to humans they really are. They shot tons of footage of her, but most of it was lost for years, until it was found recently. Morgen and his crew went through thousands of hours of this old footage and created this wonderful film about Goodall, about her work, about chimpanzees, and about her relationship with photographer Hugo van Lawick. It is sublime. ›››

Sitges Review: Zombie Christmas Musical 'Anna and the Apocalypse'

    Anna and the Apocalypse Review

Brains roasting on an open fire; zombies nipping at your nose; yuletide carols being sung by the undead. Anna and the Apocalypse is a horror comedy film from Scotland that is, as far as I know, the first ever zombie Christmas musical. Yes, indeed, you heard that right – a musical set at Christmas about a zombie apocalypse – and it’s awesome. Well, it’s not perfect, but it is damn good and the whole thing is just so much crazy fun, that I can’t help but say I enjoyed this film from start to finish. It takes a little while to get going at the start, but once we get into it, Anna and the Apocalypse becomes an instant blood-splattered smash hit. It’s worthy of being called Shaun of the Dead meets La La Land, with wonderful songs and kills galore. ›››

  • First Official Trailer for RZA's Slam Poetry Film 'Love Beats Rhymes'

First Official Trailer for RZA's Slam Poetry Film 'Love Beats Rhymes'

    Love Beats Rhymes Trailer

“I need more than potential to sell records.” Lionsgate has released the first official trailer for the new film directed by RZA titled Love Beats Rhymes, a musical drama about a struggling rapper who turns to slam poetry. Azealia Banks plays Coco, who takes a poetry class and tries to impress her teacher with her rhymes. Instead, she learns to dig deeper and discovers her “true voice.” This film also stars Hana Mae Lee, Method Man, John David Washington, Common, Lorraine Toussaint, Lucien Laviscount, and Jill Scott and Professor Dixon. This reminds me of the film festival hit Bodied, about rapping, but it also seems to have its own nice vibe to it that might make for good entertainment and creative inspiration. ›››
