Star Citizen Passes $141 Million as Dev Teases 2017 Plans

The crowdfunded PC space game Star Citizen starts the New Year with a big number: $141 million. That’s how much money the ambitious title has brought in from backers.

    No Caption Provided

Not only that, but developer Cloud Imperium Games boss Chris Roberts has released a “Happy New Year” statement in which it talked about some of its plans for Star Citizen in the New Year.

In his statement, Roberts started off by saying efforts will be made to refine and enhance the game’s engine, Lumberyard. Just before the New Year, the developer announced that it was moving on from Crytek’s CryEngine and instead use Amazon’s engine.

Roberts went on say that it’s been nice to see the positive reaction to Star Citizen’s Alpha 2.6 release, adding that there are plans in place for another update to this update. Update 2.6.1. will contain some features that “slipped out of 2.6,” as well as bug fixes and more.

You can read Roberts’ complete statement below (via DualShockers):

    Happy New Year!

There are many exciting things in store for Star Citizen this year. We’ll continue to modify and improve our game engine to better suit Star Citizen’s unique needs. Gameplay will get deeper as new systems come online to provide players the chance to do more than pew-pew. I also expect exciting advancements as we integrate our revolutionary tech, like subsumption and procedural planets, into the game. On the Community front, we’ll be releasing Spectrum, our new and improved community platform, and revamping our current shows and adding new ones in an effort to best communicate with all of you.

This week Star Citizen devs got back to work after some much deserved time off. Presently the Production Team is huddled with the different team leads updating and detailing out the tasks we have for this year. You’ll begin to see some of these details once we’ve had the opportunity to refine the Star Citizen and Squadron 42 schedules.

We were happy to see positive feedback from the Alpha 2.6 release and impressed by the number of stunning videos and images being created with the new camera controls. We have been digesting both our own and your thoughts on Alpha 2.6 now that it has been live for two weeks. We are planning releasing an incremental patch, 2.6.1 with some of the features that slipped out of 2.6, bug fixes for increased stability (although 2.6 was possibly our most stable patch to date) as well as continued balance and gameplay tweaks. Expect to hear more details on timing in the next couple of weeks.

2016 was a noteworthy year in Star Citizen’s development. 2017 with Squadron 42 and Alpha 3.0 is looking to be even better.

Awesome Art Picks: K-2SO, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, and More

Each week we search and gather up the coolest comic book art you won’t see in actual comics. The reason you won’t is because professional artists often draw sketches for fun or commissions and post them on their websites, blogs, and Tumblrs. Some artists even arrange commissions through their sites so be sure to check them out. This is a way to see the artists working on one book draw characters from other comics or publishers.

  • Injustice 2 Release Date Revealed [UPDATE]

[UPDATE] Warner Bros. PR confirmed Injustice 2’s release date to GameSpot. The NetherRealm Studios Twitter account sent out a confirmation as well. It releases on May 16 for PS4 and Xbox One.

Injustice 2 may be released May 16, according to a tweet by NetherRealm Studios Creative Director Ed Boon.

The tweet follows a listing on the official Xbox Live Rewards website earlier this week that indicated Injustice 2 would arrive in March, which Boon had said was false. Neither Boon or NetherRealm has explicitly stated whether this is the official release date.

The last character reveal for the DC Comics fighting game was back in August, when a trailer showed off Harley Quinn and Deadshot. Harley Quinn was in the original Injustice, while Deadshot is a newcomer to the series.

Injustice 2 is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

  • Adam Driver on Carrie Fisher's Passing — "A Tragedy"

Appearing last night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Star Wars actor Adam Driver remembered Princess Leia actress Carrie Fisher, who passed away last week at the age of 60.

“She burns very bright and has such a great, very generous energy,” Driver said.

He went on to say that Fisher’s own personal character in life will be sorely missed by the core members of the Star Wars acting family. “Her character, not just her character in the movie but her character [in life] missing from that very small unit [of actors], is a tragedy,” he said.

Fisher died on December 27 after suffering a heart attack days earlier on a London-to-LA flight. Her mother, the actress Debbie Reynolds, died one day later, on December 28. She was 84. A private memorial service for Fisher and Reynolds was held on January 5 in Beverly Hills.

Leia is slated to appear in this year’s Star Wars: Episode VIII and was planned to have some big scenes in 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX. In the wake of her passing, Disney and Lucasfilm are meeting to discuss Leia’s future in the Star Wars film series.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs on GameSpot parent network CBS.

  • Silly Mass Effect: Andromeda Video Introduces the Game's Main Voice Actors

BioWare has released a new trailer for Mass Effect: Andromeda that shines a light on the actors who play the game’s lead characters, Scott Ryder and Sarah Ryder. Tom Taylorson portrays Scott and Fryda Wolff plays Sarah. This silly spot envisions Taylorson and Fryda as actual siblings–and they butt heads more than a few time as siblings often do. Check it out:

This wasn’t the only new video that BioWare released this week for Andromeda. The developer also put out one the explains how you can find the actual Andromeda galaxy in the night sky with the naked eye.

Earlier this week, BioWare announced Andromeda’s release date, and released more screenshots and another new trailer.

In other news, BioWare has teased that it will announce Andromeda’s PC system requirements in February, while more news about the game’s multiplayer mode is coming “soon.”

  • Conan's Clueless Gamer Is Becoming a Series

Comedian and late night TV host Conan O’Brien’s Clueless Gamer segment is being spun into a series, apparently, TBS president Kevin Reilly has revealed.

He told The Hollywood Reporter that production on the show, which will apparently retain the name Clueless Gamer, will begin in February. According to Reilly, the new Clueless Gamer series will keep the same general formula as the existing web series where Conan plays video games and makes fun of them, oftentimes with celebrities at his side.

Some video games pay to be on Clueless Gamer as a form of advertising, but the show has apparently been such a hit that publishers are now just giving Conan their new games in hopes that he’ll promote them.

“We’ve gotten to the point where video game companies are sending us their new product for us to play and make fun of because it’s been such a huge success,” Reilly said. “We’re going to go into production on a series of that.”

Earlier this week, it was reported that the show Conan would end its daily run and become a weekly series, not unlike Samantha Bee’s show on the network. Reilly confirmed that Conan won’t shift to a once-a-week schedule, at least not yet, though he acknowledged the show will evolve.

“It’s a distinct possibility that the show may evolve, but that’s going to come from Conan as more of these things take shape,” he said, adding that for now, it’s “business as usual” for the show.

Reilly pointed out that some of Conan’s YouTube videos have been massively popular, picking up 30 million or more views. He’s also done sponsored spots, like this hilarious one with Taco Bell, and traveled around the world to film specials in places like Germany and Cuba.

“All of this is saying that he’s beginning to evolve what his brand is and what it could mean as a talk show in the digital age,” Reilly said. “So we’ve been talking about formalizing all of this and taking it to the next step. He came to me a couple of months ago, and said let’s talk about how he can balance that with the rigors of a daily talk show.

“I think it may very well change, but he hasn’t really got his hands around what it will be. It’s going to be up to him. I’m not forcing him to do anything.”

Conan has a contract with TBS through 2018, and Reilly said you can expect the comedian to renew that deal.

“We’re going to be in business with him for a long time,” the executive explained. “Television is going to continue to be a huge part of his presence, but you can also anticipate a series of announcements between now and the upfronts [in May] that will shed even more light on what we’re talking about.”

Conan’s latest Clueless Gamer segment saw the comedian play Battlefield 1 with Terry Crews.

  • New Conan Exiles Trailer Shows What You Can Do in the Open Sandbox World

Funcom today released a new trailer for Conan Exiles, highlighting game mechanics like building, crafting, defending, and fighting

Creative director Joel Bylos and lead designer Oscar Lopez Lacalle discuss these elements and talk about how Exile’s sandbox world is stuffed with things to do. Another cool part of the video is the section where it’s revealed that players can summon massive avatars of the gods who spawn in to the world to destroy everything in their path; take a look at the video below.

“They say that home is where your heart is, but in Conan Exiles, home is where you keep the hearts of your enemies,” Bylos said in the video. “Building is a big part of Conan Exiles and you will need to build smart and build strong in order to defend yourself from the environment, cannibals, monsters, and of course enemy players. We are working hard to make sure players have powerful tools to build and defend their kingdoms.”

The release of this trailer comes shortly before Exiles’ release on PC through Steam Early Access on January 31. The game launches in the Xbox One‘s Game Preview program this Spring. No date has been set for PlayStation 4.

Lastly, Funcom announced that it will host a livestream for the game on Twitch today, January 6, showing off some of the game’s “advanced building and crafting gameplay.” You can watch the event on Funcom’s Twitch channel, starting at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET.

  • X-Men Spinoff Could Bring Back Very Important Character

X-Men Spinoff Could Bring Back Very Important Character

Although production on the X-Men spinoff New Mutants is expected to start this spring, we know relatively little about it. There has been no official cast announcements as yet, but it has now been strongly hinted that X-Men star James McAvoy might reprise his role as Professor X.

    No Caption Provided

The news comes via Anya Taylor-Joy, who is rumoured be one of the stars of the film. At a recent Q&A for her new movie Split, Taylor-Joy was asked about New Mutants, and whether she had seen the pre-production Demon Bear animatic that was released in November.

“I have seen [the animatic], it’s pretty cool,” she said, via ComingSoon.net. “I’m a big fan so I’d love to be a part of it. I can’t say very much, but I would love to be a part of it. I think this year’s gonna be very exciting.”

Taylor-Joy was then asked about McAvoy, with whom she co-stars in Split, and whether they would be working together on New Mutants. “I mean, I think James is already a part of it, isn’t he?” she teased.

New Mutants is to be directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in our Stars). Last month, it was reported that an X-Men movie would begin production in Montreal in May, which Boone subsequently confirmed on Twitter was his film.

It has been rumoured that the movie will be a departure from the more traditional superhero action of the other X-Men films, with a story in ComingSoon describing it as a teen horror movie. This ties into comments made earlier in the year by X-Men producer Simon Kinberg, who said that it would have “its own unique, original voice.”

Fox has announced the release date for two movies featuring X-Men characters, but has not yet announced titles. New Mutants is expected to be one of these, alongside Deadpool 2. In addition, an X-Men TV show is in the works, produced by Bryan Singer, who directed four of the movies.
