Acclaimed Adventure Game Firewatch Passes 1 Million Copies Sold

Adventure game Firewatch has passed a major sales milestone.

Developer Campo Santo announced on Twitter that the game has now sold more than 1 million copies. The millionth copy was sold sometime in late 2016, the developer said. As announced previously, Firewatch sold 500,000 copies in its first month.

Sometime late last year we sold our one millionth copy of Firewatch. Thank you all so much! pic.twitter.com/7LSTqWuU8Q

    — Campo Santo (@camposanto) January 3, 2017

Firewatch launched in February 2016 for PC and PlayStation 4, before landing on Xbox One in September of that year. It was Campo Santo’s first title and reviews for the first-person adventure game were positive across the board.

A Firewatch movie is currently in the works at Good Universe, the film company that also produced the well-received horror movie Don’t Breathe and Last Vegas. The game, which sees players adventuring through 1989 Wyoming as part of a mysterious story, features the voices of Cissy Jones (The Walking Dead) and Rich Sommer (Mad Men).

GameSpot’s Firewatch review scored the game a 7/10.

“Its world is captivating, its design is clever, and its characters are among the most well-written in gaming,” reviewer Scott Butterworth said. “Though it might sound counterintuitive, the plot is in many ways secondary to the relationship you build between Henry and Delilah, and that portion of the game is truly inspired. I’ve already returned to Firewatch for a calming walk in the woods; I imagine I’ll go back again soon to visit with Henry and Delilah.”

  • Mass Effect: Andromeda News Coming Today, Producer Teases

BioWare is gearing up to make some kind of announcement about Mass Effect: Andromeda later today, it seems. Producer Michael Gamble said on Twitter that BioWare will have some “info” to share about the spacefaring RPG today, January 4, at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET.

Tomorrow morning. ~10 am PST. Got some info for you 🙂 https://t.co/LAlFOYEdOw

    — Michael Gamble (@GambleMike) January 4, 2017

Gamble did not get any more specific than that regarding what BioWare may have to share today. We’ll report back with the information as soon as it’s announced.

This will only be the first bit of Andromeda news today, as BioWare will show more footage of the game during Nvidia’s CES keynote address tonight, which starts at 6:30 PM PT / 9:30 PM ET.

Andromeda comes out in Spring 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC–but not Nintendo Switch. Recently, a March 31 release date for the game was discovered, but this is not confirmed.

  • Killer Instinct's Next DLC Character Is Out Now to Buy

Killer Instinct's Next DLC Character Is Out Now to Buy

The next DLC character for Microsoft’s Xbox One and PC fighting game Killer Instinct has arrived.

After being announced at the end of December, the robot killing machine Kilgore is now available to buy for $10–and there’s a special twist. Half of all purchases will go to 2017 Killer Instinct Community Fund, which kicks in money to Killer Instinct competitive gaming tournaments.

    No Caption Provided

“Even if competing in tournaments isn’t your cup of tea, you still have a chance to help support KI and the scene in an amazing way,” reads a line from a blog post announcing Kilgore’s availability.

You can buy Kilgore on your Xbox One or PC right now. Alternatively, you can queue up your download right here from Xbox Store’s website.

Kilgore’s official description is also pretty wonderful. Here it is, in full:

“Before Fulgore and the Mark 03 units were introduced to the world, Ultratech created a line of failed cyborgs during the secret CCIX Program. These hulking battle machines bore twin overpowered chain guns that tended to overheat, making them unstable and unfit for service. But one cyborg—nicknamed Kilgore—became self-aware, and started rewriting his own software to account for this deficiency in his hardware. Saved from the scrapheap, this special unit has been brought out of retirement by ARIA to enforce her will…and Kilgore obeys.”

In March 2016 more than 6 million people played Killer Instinct, representing the game’s best month ever in terms of player figures.

  • Overwatch's Roadhog to Be Nerfed Very Soon

Overwatch‘s Roadhog will have his hook ability nerfed in the Public Test Realm very soon, according to the game’s principal designer Geoff Goodman.

On the shooter’s forum, Goodman details upcoming changes to Roadhog’s ability: “The hook victim will now move in to the position directly in front of Roadhog, rather than just a straight line towards him. There is a cap on how far ‘to the side’ you can be pulled, so you can’t just hook someone, spin 180, and dump someone off a cliff.”

Goodman goes on to describe how Roadhog can no longer hook someone who he can’t see, and a persistent line-of-sight check will cut the line between Roadhog and his victim if they drop out of sight mid-hook.

The changes are planned to go live in the PC PTR “very soon,” possibly even this week.

Goodman says elsewhere in the thread that he thinks Sombra “could use a bit of a boost,” suggesting she may get a buff in the near future.

Overwatch recently got a new map, called Oasis. It’s the first new content of 2017 for the hero shooter, but director Jeff Kaplan has promised many more updates for this year, including new heroes, maps, modes, and more.

Continued support is partly why we love Overwatch here at GameSpot–we awarded it our Game of the Year for 2016.

  • Han Solo Star Wars Movie Might Add Woody Harrelson as Mentor Character

Han Solo Star Wars Movie Might Add Woody Harrelson as Mentor Character

Oscar nominated actor Woody Harrelson is in talks to join the upcoming Star Wars Han Solo movie, according to a new report. Variety has heard from sources that the Hunger Games actor is in “early talks” to play a character who acts as a mentor to Han Solo in the untitled movie.

    No Caption Provided

This would be somewhat familiar territory for Harrelson, as his Hunger Games character, Haymitch, is a mentor of sorts to Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss.

There is no word yet on the name of the character Harrelson would play in the Han Solo movie, nor are any details available regarding other actors that might be in talks for the role. Disney declined to comment.

The Han Solo movie is due out in 2018. Directed by The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street‘s Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the film stars Alden Ehrenreic as Han Solo. Donald Glover plays Lando Calrissian, while Emilia Clarke also has a role in the film.

  • Nintendo Re-Registers Eternal Darkness Trademark Ahead of Switch Reveal

Nintendo has re-registered a trademark for its acclaimed 2002 horror title Eternal Darkness.

The application was submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office on December 20, 2016, just three weeks before the Nintendo Switch is fully unveiled on January 12 / 13.

The application mentions “downloadable electronic game software,” suggesting a virtual console re-release could be on the cards. There’s no mention of any platform in the application, but it seems unlikely at this point for the game to be released on Wii U or 3DS and not Switch.

This isn’t the first time that Eternal Darkness’s trademark has been extended: Nintendo re-registered the game back in 2010, and again in 2013. No re-release has yet materialised, however.

There’s also no mention of the successor to Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, Shadow of the Eternals. The semi-sequel was first teased in 2013, but the failure of its Kickstarter campaign put the project at risk. Creator Denis Dyack claimed in 2016 that the project was still alive, however.

In other Nintendo Switch news, the platform is rumored to be getting a third version of Pokemon Sun and Moon, as well as a new 3D Mario and a port of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Keep an eye on GameSpot for all the latest news on Nintendo’s new platform.

  • Alien: Isolation Never Got a VR Version, But Alien: Covenant Will

Alien: Covenant will be getting a VR companion experience at some point this year.

As reported by The Verge, the virtual reality app is being produced by the film’s director, Ridley Scott, who also directed the original Alien in 1979. It’s apparently a collaboration between Scott’s production company RSA Films, VR production house MPC VR, and Twentieth Century Fox’s in-house VR department, the Fox Innovation Lab. The latter describes the experience as “a dread-inducing journey into the depths of the Alien universe.” There’s currently no news on which platforms the experience will be available on.

This isn’t the first time the Alien universe has been playable in VR. Alien: Isolation, the 2014 Creative Assembly game, had a pre-release VR demo, but that never materialised into a final commercial product. We awarded the final, non-VR game a 6 in our Alien: Isolation review.

Alien: Covenant, meanwhile, hits theaters on May 19. It recently got an action-packed first trailer, and director Ridley Scott explained why he’ll never make a superhero movie.

  • "Hollyweed" Prank Prompts Tighter Security Going Forward

The organization that handles maintenance for the iconic Hollywood sign has vowed to improve security following a prank this past weekend where it was changed to say “Hollyweed.”

I don’t know who did this to the Hollywood Sign, but I’m quite impressed they got away with it. pic.twitter.com/KaRZPSs1iw

    — Steve-O (@steveo) January 1, 2017

Chris Baumgart, the chairman for the Hollywood Sign Trust, told The Hollywood Reporter that the latest prank demonstrates that “there are opportunities to make improvements” in the area of security.

“We will be deploying additional technology to tighten up surveillance and thus deter unwanted visitors in the future,” he explained. “This is more than preventing pranks or trespassing at the sign. Our concern is the safety of the neighborhood and the trespassers that put themselves at risk because it is extremely unsafe to be on the sign, let alone traversing the treacherous hillside that is home to those 9 famous letters.”

Currently, the sign is monitored by the LAPD with a camera system. First installed in 1994, the security system has been updated “several” times since then, according to THR. The person or group responsible for the prank committed a trespassing violation, an LAPD officer told the site, but no one has been arrested as of yet.

Workers restored the Hollywood sign to its normal look by Monday morning.

In 1976, then-student Daniel Finegood altered the sign to say Hollyweed for an art project. He was not arrested.

In November 2016, California residents voted to legalize the recreational use of marijuana.
