  • Watch New Crash Bandicoot Trilogy Remaster Gameplay

Activision today released new gameplay footage for Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, a compilation pack that includes updated versions of the first three games in the series.

This newest gameplay video shows off the first game’s fifth level, Upstream, which sees Crash making his way up a river. As you’ll see, new features have been added, including a more advanced water system that shows ripples in the water as a lillypad is about to sink, providing a cue for the player for when to jump. The video also spotlights the game’s bonus missions. Take a look (via DualShockers):

In March, Activision showed off the N. Sane Trilogy’s “Hang Eight” level from Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Backwatch it here.

The Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy includes three old-school Crash games: Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, and Crash Bandicoot: Warped. They were all originally made by Naughty Dog, while Activision’s Vicarious Visions is making the PlayStation 4 game.

Vicarious Visions used the original games’ level geometry, but the gameplay is rebuilt from scratch. Some new features for the updated versions include a unified checkpoint and save system (including manual and auto-saving), as well as a unified menu system. There will also time trials available for each game.

The collection launches for PlayStation 4 on June 30, though it may not be exclusive to Sony’s console. The original three games included in the pack, plus racing title Crash Team Racing and party game Crash Bash, were all exclusive to PlayStation in their original releases, but subsequent games in the series have appeared on multiple platforms.

What do you make of this new gameplay footage? let us know in the comments below!

  • Star Wars: Battlefront 2 May Not Have Season Pass, But “Something Different” Instead

Like Titanfall 2 and Mass Effect: Andromeda before it, EA’s Star Wars: Battlefront 2 may not have a DLC Season Pass. Creative director Bernd Diemer told Mashable outright, “We don’t have a season pass,” before going on to tease that EA is working on “something different” in this area instead.

“I cannot talk about the specifics of this, but we have something different in mind that will allow you to play longer, be [more] invested in the game without having a fragmented community,” he said.

The fragmentation that Diemer is talking about relates to 2015’s Battlefront and the DLC that was released through its own Season Pass. If you don’t own the game’s extra content, it means you aren’t able to play with the game’s full community of players, which in turn can make it more challenging to find a match.

It sounds like Battlefront 2 is taking steps to avoid a similar situation. He told Mashable that it’s “dangerous” for the health of a game’s playerbase when maps and modes are only available to those who pay money for them. In this situation, “The community is falling apart because there are simply not many people playing the different modes.”

He added: “So we definitely want to avoid that. We don’t want to segment our community.”

“We decided on that, and it’s one of those difficult decisions because it has so many implications all around,” Diemer explained. “When we looked at the way Battlefront had evolved over its lifetime, with the DLC and everything, we decided, ‘You know what? For this type of game, season passes are not the best thing. We need to [take it apart] and come up with something better.”

For its part, EA said in a statement to Mashable that it is aware of the feedback from Battlefront as it relates to “live service plans,” and it will announce plans for Battlefront 2 in due time.

“While we’re not ready to confirm any live service plans just yet, what we can say is this we heard the feedback from our Battlefront community loud and clear,” the statement said. “We know they want more depth, more progression, and more content. So we’re focused on delivering that in every dimension of Star Wars Battlefront 2. We’ll have more to share about our plans soon.”

  • Fate Of The Furious Passes The Force Awakens To Set New Opening-Weekend Record

The latest installment in the Fast and Furious franchise was expected to open to big numbers–and it delivered. The eighth movie in the series brought in $532.5 million at the worldwide box office this weekend, passing Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($529 million) to set an all-time opening-weekend high. Entertainment Weekly supplied the numbers and has a breakdown of this weekend’s results.

What might have helped The Fate of the Furious is that it opened in major movie markets such as China and Russia alongside the US and UK. Furious 7 opened in China and Russia after the initial release.

Globally, The Fate of the Furious is pacing ahead of the last movie, Furious 7, but the same can’t be said for its performance in the US. Furious 7 made $147 million in the US for its opening weekend in 2015, which is far better than the $100.2 million that The Fate of the Furious made domestically this weekend.

    This downturn was expected.

The Fate of the Furious was rumored to have a production budget of $250 million, so making more than twice that in one weekend alone seems like a strong start. For more on the movie, you can check out GameSpot’s review and what other critics are saying.

Directed by Straight Outta Compton‘s F. Gary Gray, the movie stars Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson, Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, Michelle Rodriguez, Helen Mirren, and Kurt Russell.

Elsewhere at the box office, The Boss Baby brought in a further $15.5 million, helping it cross $100 million in the US alone. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast continues to make money, bringing in $13.6 million, while Smurfs: The Lost Village ($6.5 milllion) and Going in Style ($6.3 million) round out the top five.

The full April 14-16 US box office estimates can be seen below, as compiled by EW.

    1. The Fate of the Furious – $100.2 million
    2. The Boss Baby – $ 15.5 million
    3. Beauty and the Beast – $13.6 million
    4. Smurfs: The Lost Village – $6.5 million
    5. Going In Style – $6.3 million
    6. Gifted – $3 million
    7. Get Out – $2.9 million
    8. Power Rangers – $2.8 million
    9. The Case For Christ – $ 2.7 million
    10. Kong: Skull Island – $2.6 million

  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi Will “Address” Rey's Parentage, Director Says

Who are Rey’s parents? It might not be too long until we find out the burning Star Wars question. This December’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi will “address” Rey’s parentage, director Rian Johnson has revealed.

Speaking on Good Morning America this week, Johnson said, “It’s something that is absolutely going to be addressed.” He was about to reveal more details, saying “it depends on…” but then he stopped himself from saying too much. Here’s the clip:

EXCLUSIVE: @StarWars director @rianjohnson says Rey’s parentage will absolutely be addressed in #TheLastJedi. #SWCO pic.twitter.com/wgupPzYDkB

    — Good Morning America (@GMA) April 14, 2017

The Last Jedi will have lots of surprises and twists for fans, and Johnson said he wants to keep all of these secret until the movie comes out so viewers can find out for themselves.

“How we address [Rey’s parentage] and how you feel about it and what happens with that is one of them,” he said about The Last Jedi‘s secrets.

Last year, Rey actress Daisey Ridley teased that The Last Jedi may reveal who Rey’s parents are. According to USA Today report, Johnson said the “deepening of familial themes” in the movie will play a “huge part” in the story, especially for Rey. This sounds like a reference to the question around who Rey’s parents are.

The first trailer for The Last Jedi was released this week at Star Wars Celebration–watch it here. Also at the show, we saw a new trailer for Star Wars: Battlefront 2, learned its release date, and a lot more. Check out GameSpot’s roundup here to see all the big news from Star Wars Celebration.

  • Star Citizen Alpha 3.0 Detailed, As Creator Says It's The Most Ambitious Game Ever

Big news in the world of Star Citizen today, as creator Chris Roberts has laid out a development roadmap for the PC space game, including the Alpha 3.0 release, which he says offers a “giant jump in gameplay potential.” Not only that, but Roberts says he believes Star Citizen is the most ambitious game ever made.

Alpha Update 3.0 represents a “major milestone” for Star Citizen, Roberts said, in part because it’s the first time people will get to try the game’s Planetary Tech “in a live build” of the game.

“3.0 represents a giant jump in gameplay potential from the code in the 2.x branch,” Roberts said.

The aforementioned Planetary Tech “opens up a whole new landscape (pun intended) for adventure,” Roberts added. “In the same way that Large World and Physics Grids created new possibilities in gameplay by allowing players to go from walking around a space station to boarding a ship, flying it hundreds of thousands of kilometers, exiting their pilot seat, walking to an airlock, opening it and EVAing over to a derelict station, all from the same point of view, the Planetary Tech takes it one massive leap further.”

What this means in practice is that, when you encounter a planet or a moon, you can actually go there, land on it, and explore boots on the ground or in a vehicle.

“All seamlessly, all with the incredible first person detail that Star Citizen is known for,” Roberts said. “With this we are delivering something that goes way beyond the initial promises and conception of Star Citizen; we will be simulating a First person Universe with almost no limits. It’s a great illustration of how with the support of a Community as great as Star Citizen’s anything is possible.”

Star Citizen update 3.0 is aiming to launch at the end of June, Roberts said. At that time, there will be three moons available to land on: Cellin, Yela, and Dayman. Later on, “all the main landing zones for Stanton” will be added, which is a little later than expected.

“We had originally hoped to deliver most of the Stanton Landing Zones with the first release of Planetary Tech, but that proved optimistic once the talented team at Behaviour, who had built ArcCorp, Levski, Grim HEX, and had begun work on the remaining landing zones of Stanton, moved off Star Citizen and onto another Behaviour project in December,” Roberts said.

“We had been steadily shifting our reliance away from external resources and we felt it would be unfair to block them from the opportunity to work on their own game,” he added. “Unfortunately, replacing an Environment team of over 20 is no small task, which has set back the progress we had originally planned to make on the landing zones of Stanton. As of today, we have just abut replaced the team with internal hires and we are continuing to hire additional environment artists as fast as we can find ones that meet our quality bar. The Environment Team is now some 37 artists strong, so long term we feel we are better situated to deliver the vast amount of locations that Star Citizen and Squadron 42 needs.”

Planetary Tech is just one of the new gameplay systems coming to Star Citizen with the 3.0 update; one of the others is a “Player Interaction Mode,” which offers a “much wider variety of actions and gameplay.” Check out this detailed rundown to learn more about what’s planned for Alpha 3.0.

Of course, Alpha 3.0 is not the last update coming to Star Citizen. Take a look at this in-depth roadmap schedule to get a better idea of what Cloud Imperium is planning.

“It’s a pretty big deal to share the schedule of our longer term roadmap, but we felt that it would help with everyone’s visibility on when certain features and content can be expected and understanding when things take longer or priorities shift due to unforeseen problems,” Roberts said. “We would not be here without all of your support and in some ways the Community is an extension of the development team providing the funding and the feedback on the huge undertaking we are doing.”

Roberts went on to boast about Star Citizen and its level of ambition and crowdfunded nature, saying he can’t imagine a publisher would have signed it.

“No one has ever attempted to build a game as ambitious as Star Citizen and I doubt any publisher would have the patience or stamina that it requires to build something that breaks molds the way Star Citizen does,” Roberts said. “3.0 with its Planetary Tech is a testimony to the power of Crowdfunding and an enthusiastic, empowered Community. Myself and the team and eternally thankful to be able to build Star Citizen the right way, being able to take the time to engineer things for the long term, a way that will allow the universe to flourish for years to come. Together we are making history.”

Star Citizen is believed to be the most successful community-funded project of any kind in history. It’s raised more than $146.5 million, according to the developer’s latest numbers.

  • Carrie Fisher Will Not Be In Star Wars: Episode 9, Lucasfilm Boss Says

Earlier this month, Carrie Fisher’s brother said the late actress would be in Star Wars: Episode IX. At the time, he said Lucasfilm would use “recent footage” of the actress to put her in the film. Now, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has responded, confirming that Fisher will not be in Episode IX.

Kennedy confirmed this is an interview with Good Morning America, which airs on Disney subsidiary ABC. “Sadly, Carrie will not be in [Episode IX],” Kennedy said. You can watch the clip below (via The Verge).

EXCLUSIVE: Lucasfilm President Kathy Kennedy says Carrie Fisher will NOT be in @StarWars Episode 9 as General Leia. #SWCO #TheLastJedi pic.twitter.com/gxH80QteYb

    — Good Morning America (@GMA) April 14, 2017

Fisher will reprise her role as General Organa in this December’s The Last Jedi. You will be seeing a lot of her in the movie, and she’s great in it, Kennedy said in the interview. The first trailer for The Last Jedi was released today at Star Wars Celebration–watch it here.

Kennedy mentioned in the GMA interview that the script for 2019’s Episode IX was not written when Fisher passed away in December 2016. Fisher’s brother, Todd, was “confused” regarding Carrie’s appearance in Episode IX, Kennedy said.

Kennedy and Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow met in January 2017 to discuss Leia’s role in the Star Wars universe going forward. Lucasfilm also confirmed that it would not use CGI to digitally resurrect Leia.

“Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family,” the statement continued. “She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars.”

A touching tribute to Fisher was released at Star Wars Celebration this week–watch it here.

  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Documentary Comes Up Short In Funding, But It's Still Happening

The documentary about the famous Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series failed to reach its funding goal of $75,000 on Indiegogo. The campaign for “Pretending I’m a Superman The Tony Hawk Game Story” ended this week bringing in only $17,409.

Now, the producers of the film have released a statement, confirming that they still intend to produce the documentary. However, it might take longer than expected given funding wasn’t as successful as they had hoped. Unlike Kickstarter, Indiegogo is not all-or-nothing, so the makers of the documentary are using the funds they received, in addition to their own investment, to finance the film.

Our #Indiegogo campaign ended 13 hours ago, thanks for all the support! This is our open letter. #THPSfilm #THPS pic.twitter.com/92ztLi7Hvi

    — Tony Hawk Games Doc (@THPSfilm) April 14, 2017

In the statement, the producers explain that it was never their intent to rely exclusively on Indiegogo funding. Had the full $75,000 come through, the production process might have gone faster. Additionally, a number of sponsors have expressed interest in backing the project, the statement says, though they were not named.

Though the $75,000 figure was not reached, the team said in the statement that “there is, in fact, a pretty big audience that found the project interesting.”

Along with accounts from Tony Hawk himself, the film is expected to feature developers and skaters who helped create everything from the first Pro Skater to the most recent fifth installment and the many games in between.

It’s being produced by Ralph D’Amato, who was also a producer on Tony Hawk’s earlier games. You can learn more about the project here.

The latest Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game was 2015’s Pro Skater 5, which many remarked was a disappointment.

  • Nintendo Switch Sales Hit 2.4M Worldwide In First Month, Report Says

After Nintendo itself announced first-month US sales for the Switch of 906,000 units, independent research group SuperData today put out a report that speaks to the console’s success globally. According to SuperData, the hybrid system sold 2.4 million units worldwide in its first month.

This data comes from SuperData’s own modeling, not from Nintendo, so it may not be entirely accurate.

Nintendo had officially said it was expecting to ship 2 million units to retailers worldwide for March, so SuperData’s predictions are above expectations. With that in mind, SuperData said today that it is changing its forecast for total Switch 2017 sales, from 5 million units to 7.2 million units sold.

“Nintendo is performing above expectations, which suggests that, at least for now, it is well on its way to restore investor confidence,” SuperData CEO Joost van Dreunen said in a statement.

He added that the upcoming lineup for Switch games is “looking strong,” with new games such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 expected to “do well.” Van Dreunen went on to say that a “differentiator” for the Switch is its element of nostalgia, featuring games like ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove and others.

In other news, Nintendo announced that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has surpassed 1 million copies sold. Additionally, Nintendo held its latest Nintendo Direct briefing this week–here’s a roundup of all the big announcements.

  • Mystery Science Theater 3000: Episode 1 Review

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Episode 1 Review

After 18 years off the air, the wise-cracking, movie-riffing phenomenon known as Mystery Science Theater 3000 is back. The series returns to for a 12th season, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign. but this time around, the show is streaming on Netflix. While there have been many classic series with a cult following brought back for the modern era, MST3K is one–and the only–revamp that embraces its roots and provides new content that is as good, if not better, than the original.

The new series follows Jonah Heston (Jonah Ray), a Gizmonic Institute employee who falls into a devious trap set by Kinga Forrester (Felicia Day) and TV’s Son of TV’s Frank (Patton Oswalt). Heston ends up aboard the Satellite of Love, where Forrester and Frank send him cheesy movies–the worst they can find. Heston must watch the movies, while Forrester monitors his mind. All of this exposition is mentioned in the opening theme song. Heston isn’t alone, though. Joining him are his robotic friends: Cambot, Gypsy, Tom Servo, and Crow. They watch the movies with Heston, all while making fun of them. Because of the early access to this episode, specific information about it, screencaps, and what movie the crew watches are not allowed to be released.

    No Caption Provided

The opening moments of the episode, prior to the theme song, introduce Heston and how he became trapped on the Satellite of Love. Much like the original series, the show relies on models and cheap-looking special effects for all the moments that take place in space. In an age of computer generated effects, seeing models–and even the strings attached to them–is a breath of fresh air. It sets the tone for the show, mainly for those who have never heard of it. MST3K doesn’t take itself seriously, and it’s providing light-hearted fun.

In addition to Ray, Day, and Oswalt being included in the new season, Tom Servo, Crow, and Gypsy get new voices. Hampton Yount (@midnight) plays Crow, Baron Vaughn (Comedy Bang Bang) is Servo, and Rebecca Hanson voices Gypsy. It’s jarring to hear these new voices coming out of these well-known puppets. The voices simply don’t match what the viewers are accustomed to in the past. It can be bit hard to determine who is who. However, this group begins to meld together exceptionally well by the end of episode one, and it’s quite apparent that Ray will be a great lead for the new season.

Aside from the voices, the personalities are a big part of these robots, and it takes about halfway through the episode for that to kick in. It feels like there is a lot of trial and error in perfecting each voice for the characters. A lot of what feels problematic here could easily be placed on the viewer, as they may be expecting a carbon-copy of the characters from the original show. It’s apparent MST3K is trying something different, but after the first episode, that’s not clear just yet.

One thing the new season of MST3K did exceptionally well is in the writing department. The riffs are smart, natural, and most of the time, incredibly funny. There is a little bit of a lean towards nerd culture with the references, but at no time does that alienate anyone watching the show. It feels very inclusive in that respect. One of the new additions to the show is a couple of musical numbers, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Regardless, the in-show music is clever and well-written and should play exceptionally well to a younger viewing audience, creating a whole new generation of fans.

    No Caption Provided

A few other familiar elements from the original series return, like the “Invention Exchange.” Aspects like this one help create an easy transition between seasons and casts. In addition, much like the original, there are breaks from the movie, so the viewers can get to know the cast a bit better. It helps the pacing of the show because as many longtime fans will know, some of the movies the crew watches are really tough to get through.

The new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 lives up to the high expectations. While there may be a few small bumps in the road, the opening offering is one of the better overall episodes of the entire series. The Netflix series continues the tradition of watching bad movies and making fun of them without messing with the original format of the show. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” seems to be the philosophy for the new show, and fans will be extremely pleased with its execution.

The new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 hits Netflix on Friday, April 14.

Disclosure: The author of this review backed the “Bring Back Mystery Science Theater 3000” campaign on Kickstarter, which gave early access to the first episode for some backers.
