GameStop To Close Up To 225 Stores Worldwide

    No Caption Provided

Next time you try to trade in a used console, you might run into clearance sales–or an empty storefront.

Following a year of lower-than-expected sales capped off by a disappointing holiday season, GameStop announced that it anticipates shuttering 2-3% of its stores worldwide in a recent earnings report. Based on this figure, up to 225 of the company’s 7,500 stores worldwide could be facing closure.

The retailer’s fourth-quarter profits in 2016 had dipped by 13.6% since those from the prior year, prompting its stock to plunge by 31%. These losses were made in sales of both new games and new consoles, which GameStop attributed to “aggressive console promotions by other retailers on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday,” as well as “weak sales of certain AAA titles.”

As a potential silver lining, GameStop also reported a 27.8% increase in its collectibles sales over the year, mostly thanks to strong sales of Pokemon merchandise and the success of affiliate brands such as the geek-culture merchandiser ThinkGeek and the AT&T technology retailer Spring Mobile. Accordingly, it plans to open roughly 35 new collectibles stores and 65 new technology stores.

  • Deadpool 2: Brad Pitt Was Apparently Interested In Playing Cable

Here’s something cool about Deadpool 2: Collider heard from sources that veteran actor Brad Pitt considered playing the role of Cable in the upcoming sequel.

According to the report, both film studio Fox and Pitt himself were enthusiastic. However, Pitt has since moved on, but those who want to see the Fight Club actor in the film shouldn’t lose all hope yet. “Since this role is very much in flux, there’s the possibility that things could change,” Collider reported.

One thing that might complicate matters for Pitt is that he is scheduled to star in and produce the zombie movie World War Z 2, which is in the works but not yet fully confirmed.

Cable is said to play a major role in Deadpool 2. Earlier this week, it was reported that Oscar-nominated actor Michael Shannon is the frontrunner for the part; Stranger Things actor David Harbour is also reportedly in the mix. We’ll report back with more details as they become available.

In addition to Cable, Deadpool 2 will feature the character Domino, who will be played by Atlanta star Zazie Beetz.

Deadpool 2 is set to be directed by John Wick’s David Leitch. He replaces the first film’s director, Tim Miller, who dropped out over reported creative differences with Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds.

No release date has been set for Deadpool 2.

Sandler’s Netflix films have not received the strongest reviews, but they have been massively successful, apparently.

  • InXile Boss Brian Fargo To Retire After Wasteland 3 Ships In 2019

Brian Fargo, an industry veteran who worked at original Fallout developer Interplay and now heads up inXile, has announced that he will retire in 2019 after his studio’s latest game, Wasteland 3, comes out.

Fargo told Eurogamer, “It seems like a good time to drop the mic,” adding that Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera “came out great.”

Some of inXile’s other in-development projects include The Bard’s Tale and the virtual reality game The Mage’s Tale.

Fargo told Eurogamer that after decades of work in the video game business, it’s time to take a break.

“I love this industry, but I’ve been at this since 1981. I’ve been at it with Ken and Roberta Williams [Sierra co-founders], Trip Hawkins [EA founder], the guys from Brøderbund,” he said. “I look at my friends, they have a lot more spare time than I do. It’s a very intense business. It’s all encompassing. It seems like I should relax for a little bit.”

It remains to be seen who will replace Fargo as inXile’s top boss, though he said he’s confident in his team and their abilities. “I’ve been training these people for years to make me obsolete. That’s what you have to do as a leader of a company,” he said.

Finally, Fargo stressed that inXile, as it stands today, is a profitable company with a bright future.

“We don’t owe any external people any money. We don’t have any debt,” he said. “The other shares are with some of the employees of the company. So as long as it continues doing good product it should be fine.”

  • Wrestlemania 33: How Long Is The Show?

Wrestlemania 33: How Long Is The Show?

WWE’s PPVs seem to be getting longer and longer, and the next one coming up is the company’s largest event of the year, Wrestlemania. In 2016, the event lasted seven hours, including a two hour preshow. 2017’s Wrestlemania 33 is a touch shorter, coming in at six and a half hours.

    No Caption Provided

Currently, Wrestlemania will air on PPV and the WWE Network on Sunday, April 2 at 7 PM ET/4 PM PT. A Kickoff Show will air on the WWE Network prior to the main event, starting at 5 PM ET/2 PM PT. The second hour of the show will also air on the USA Network.

According to WWE Network’s schedule for that day, a four hour time slot was given for Wrestlemania 33. Including the Kickoff Show, that’s six hours for Wrestlemania. However, it could run longer. Industry-insider Dave Meltzer tweeted that the show will run six and a half hours.

WWE’s larger PPVs, which include Summerslam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble, and Wrestlemania, are typically longer shows, each of them hitting the six-hour mark over the past year. Wrestlemania going for almost seven isn’t out of the question.

Considered the Super Bowl of sports entertainment, the first Wrestlemania took place in 1985 at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. The show lasted two hours and sixteen minutes.

  • Ex-Mass Effect Animator Explains Andromeda's Issues

Mass Effect: Andromeda‘s animation issues have been well-documented, and its dialogue scenes criticized by much of the game’s community. Now, an ex-BioWare developer has provided some insight into why Andromeda’s facial animations might not be as high quality as some other games’.

Jonathan Cooper, who is now an animator on the Uncharted series at Naughty Dog, explained on Twitter that “animating an RPG is a really, really big undertaking–completely different from a game like Uncharted so comparisons are unfair.” He said that in a more linear series like Uncharted, every encounter with another character is “highly controlled,” where the the developer can create “bespoke animations.”

“Conversely, RPGs offer a magnitude more volume of content and importantly, player/story choice. It’s simply a quantity vs quality tradeoff,” he pointed out.

Cooper, who was the lead animator on the original Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, goes on to explain that in an RPG like Mass Effect: Andromeda, “designers (not animators) sequence pre-created animations together–like DJs with samples and tracks.” Because of the amount of dialogue options, conversations, and order these can come in in an RPG, “dialogues are separated into tiered quality levels based on importance/likelihood,” where “The lowest quality scenes may not even be touched by hand” and an algorithm covers the rest.

“Andromeda seems to have lowered the quality of its base algorithm,” Cooper posits. He thinks BioWare may have “underestimated [the] task” of “hitting every line by hand.”

The attention Andromeda has received “is exacerbated by us living in an era of Share buttons and YouTube,” says Cooper, “Getting the lowest quality out to the widest audience.” You can see the animator’s full explanation at the bottom of this article.

Since the game went live for EA and Origin Access Members on March 15, reaction has been mixed when it comes to the game’s animations and facial models in particular. The game’s Subreddit, for example, has multiple posts from fans disappointed by those aspects of Andromeda.

Though no animation improvements were included in its day one patch, Andromeda’s lead designer, Ian Frazier, has said there will be “more patches later on, but what goes into them is still in discussion.” Another recent update addressed a number of other single-player and multiplayer issues–see the full patch notes here.

In other Andromeda news, the sci-fi title recently got even bigger with the addition of its first free Apex mission. You can track your progress in those quests with the game’s new companion app.

In our review, critic Scott Butterworth said Andromeda “feels like a vision half-fulfilled.”

“It contains a dizzying amount of content,” he explained, “but the quality fluctuates wildly.” Read more in our full Mass Effect: Andromeda review, or read what other critics thought in this review roundup.

  • The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 3 Release Date Revealed, New Trailer Released

The third episode of Telltale’s The Walking Dead Season 3 has been teased in a new trailer, which also reveals the episode’s release date as March 28.

Episode 3 – Above the Law sees this season’s new playable character, Javier, struggling to settle with his newly reunited family. Take a look at the video below to find out more before the new instalment arrives for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and mobile devices next week.

The Walking Dead Season 3 – A New Frontier kicked off with a two-part premiere in December 2016, after a small delay from November.

Both Clementine and Javier are playable in this third season. They come from different backgrounds but unite in their struggle to protect their loved ones. Executive producer Kevin Boyle previously said, “Javier will begin to unravel the mystery of who Clementine has become, as her story intersects with his–both of them still driven by the things they value most, long after society’s collapse.”

The new season allows you to import saves from Season 2, and you can find out how to do that here if you’re moving between platforms such as from PS3 to PS4. If you’re approaching the new season fresh, then Telltale’s story generator will tell you what kind of survivor you are, filling in your character’s journey so far.

In other Telltale news, Nintendo Switch versions of Telltale’s Batman and Guardians of the Galaxy series have potentially been leaked by a number of retailers, though there’s not been any official indication as to whether they’re real or not.

  • Football Manager 2017 Is Free To Play This Weekend

Publisher Sega has announced that its soccer sim, Football Manager 2017, is free to play this weekend on Steam. That means PC users can access “the full Football Manager experience” without charge until Sunday, March 26 at noon PST / 3 PM ET / 8 PM GMT.

In a blog post, Sega promises this free trial grants players “unrestricted access” to the game, including the stripped-down Classic Mode and the dream team-style Fantasy Draft. The latter has you manage a squad packed with the world’s biggest stars, with the ability to challenge your friends online.

Once the free trial ends on Sunday, FM 2017 will be half price to purchase permanently, making it $25 / £17.50–and your progress from the free period will carry over if you decide to buy the full game. The game’s tablet and smartphone versions (called Touch and Mobile, respectively) do not appear to be on offer.

Critic Richard Wakeling awarded the PC game a 7/10 in our Football Manager 2017 review, praising the match engine and overall presentation, but criticizing the lack of new features found in this year’s title.

“Football Manager 2017 is not a game of revolution, but one of refinement,” he said. “Transfers are smarter and more involved, and the faster player development and streamlining of information are welcome. The perennial strengths of Football Manager are stronger than ever, yet it’s the furtive improvements to the match engine that really set Football Manager 2017 apart from its immediate predecessor. Sure, I still have gripes with the tactical interface, and there isn’t anything new there worth writing about. But if your rear end has ever been entrenched in the virtual dugout or you’re just a fresh-faced hopeful looking to begin your journey, Football Manager 2017 is easy to recommend to the budding manager.”
