  • Twin Peaks Revival Teased Again With Mysterious Puzzles

The cult TV show Twin Peaks returns to screens next month, but so far we’ve barely seen any footage from the show. The cryptic marketing continues with the latest set of teasers, which take the form of mysterious word puzzles. Check the first out below, and the rest at the end of this story–and if you figure them out, let us know in the comments!

New cast images from the upcoming new season were revealed last month. These follow several teasers, including co-creator David Lynch snacking on a donut in character as Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole, composer Angelo Badalamenti performing some of the show’s haunting music, and a compilation of the many moments the characters have enjoyed coffee.

The two-hour premiere of the new Twin Peaks season debuts on Showtime on May 21 at 9 PM ET, and the following two episodes will be available online immediately afterwards. The season will comprise 18 episodes, and Lynch has described the show as “a feature film in 18 parts.”

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, actor Kyle McLachlan spoke about what it was like to return as the show’s main character, Agent Dale Cooper. “A little weird,” he admitted. “Familiar, but not as familiar as I thought it would be. I’m different. Cooper is–will be–different. But the core of him is still there. When I walked on the set and David saw me, we were smiling from ear to ear.”

Twin Peaks originally ran from 1990-91 on ABC, followed by a prequel film, Fire Walk With Me, in 1992.

Disclosure: Showtime is a division of CBS, which is GameSpot’s parent company.

  • PS4 Update 4.55 Out Now, But It Doesn't Do Much

PlayStation 4‘s latest system update is available to download now, but don’t expect it to do too much. The patch notes consist of one line that simply reads, “This system software update improves the quality of the system performance.” The patch weighs in at around 320 MB.

The most recent PS4 Pro update added 4K support to its media player, but you still won’t be able to watch 4K Blu-Rays.

Before that, every PS4 user received version 4.5 in March. It introduced Boost Mode for PS4 Pro and added support for external hard drives.

The Boost Mode feature aims to improve the quality and performance of games that have not been patched to support PS4 Pro. “This can provide a noticeable frame rate boost to some games with variable frame rates, and can provide frame rate stability for games that are programmed to run at 30 Hz or 60 Hz,” Sony explained at the time.

Microsoft’s upcoming Project Scorpio does something similar with its added power over the Xbox One. A recent report said the console has the potential to run existing games at a higher frame rate and resolution. For more on Project Scorpio, check out our in-depth look at its full tech specs.

  • Stephen King's The Mist TV Show Gets First Trailer And Details On What's Changed

TV network Spike has released the first trailer for its upcoming series based on Stephen King’s novella The Mist. Like the book, the TV series tells the story of what happens when a creepy mist comes to town. But unlike the book, the show has a new cast of characters and will tell its own story.

The show’s creator, Christian Torpe, told Entertainment Weekly that Frank Darabont’s 2007 movie The Mist is an example of a good adaption of King’s work. He wanted to be “respectful to the source material” with the show–but also try new things.

“The novella is 200 pages and one location, and we needed to change that to make an ongoing series. But we wanted to remain faithful to the heart of the story,” he said.

In the book, the people of the town huddled together in a grocery store to avoid the mist and the monsters outside. While in the store, they became the monsters. In the TV show, there will be several of these “lockdown locations,” according to EW. As you can see in the trailer, these include places like a church and a mall.

EW has an in-depth and fascinating feature on the Mist TV show–read it here.

The show premieres June 22 on Spike. It stars Alyssa Sutherland, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Bill Carr, Gus Birney, and Luke Cosgrove.

In other news about Stephen King adaptations, the first trailer for the killer clown movie It was recently released. In picked up more than 197 million views in its first day to set a new 24-hour record. Additionally, the movie The Dark Tower has been delayed yet again.

To help you get an idea about if The Fate of The Furious is worth your time and money, we have collected excerpts from a variety of online reviews into a roundup.

In other news about the movie, tracking estimates suggest the movie will have a worse opening weekend than 2015’s Furious 7 in the US but perform better internationally.

    • Film: The Fate of the Furious
    • Release Date: April 14
    • Starring:
    • Directed By: F. Gary Gray
    • Rating: PG-13
    • Runtime: 136 minutes

    CNET

“Maybe it’s just fatigue. Eight is a lot of movies for a series that started out with a ring of thieves boosting DVD players and now has something to do with stopping nuclear warheads. The escalation had to run out of fuel at some point. But to use the obvious metaphor, it’s a shame the series had to take a wrong turn.” — Luke Lancaster [Full review]

    Rolling Stone

“The Fate of the Furious doesn’t have a thought in its head to match the best of Bond and Bourne. What it is, in every sense of the term, is insanely entertaining.” — Peter Travers [Full review]

    IGN

“The Fate of the Furious provides plenty of the high-octane escapism and ridiculously elaborate vehicular mayhem fans of the series expect, while also laying the groundwork for a new phase in the franchise.” — Jim Vejvoda [Full review]

    The Guardian

“…this is a big dumb action movie in its purest, most honourable sense: fast, furious, and frequently fun.” — Gwilym Mumford [Full review]

    The Wrap

“And so the Furious series tries to have its heart in the right place, but only so that the pedal can be put to the metal for many more years and films to come.” — Dan Callahan [Full review]

    Variety

“Most franchises, after eight films, are feeling a twinge of exhaustion, but this one has achieved a level of success–and perpetual kinetic creative energy–that’s a testament to its commercial/cultural/demographic resonance. So it only makes sense that its characters must now do important things. Breaking the speed limit never looked so responsible.” — Owen Gleiberman [Full review]

  • Knights Of The Old Republic Reboot Rumored To Be In Development

BioWare Austin is “prototyping” a new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic title, according to a report from Unseen64 and Did You Know Gaming’s Liam Robertson.

Speaking on an episode of his podcast, which is exclusive to Patreon subscribers but has been reported on by The Star Wars Game Outpost, Robertson said he had it on “good authority” that the studio, which most recently developed the MMORPG The Old Republic, was working on “a sort of remake/revival of Knights of the Old Republic.” This, however, has reportedly now become a new Star Wars project.

“I don’t really know how that game’ll end up,” he continued. “I’ve heard that it isn’t exactly a remake anymore, but it started as a remake/revival. Now it’s kind of going from that blueprint in sort of its own original thing. I guess we’ll see what that turns out to be, but they are prototyping it right now.”

Despite using the Knights of the Old Republic name when discussing BioWare Austin’s new project, Robertson said he believed that it won’t be Knights of the Old Republic 3, and may in fact move away from that lore. Instead, he believes the game “is sort of like wiping the slate clean” and will “embrace the new Star Wars universe lore.”

Robertson did not reveal his source, but has a solid history of bringing to light canceled video game development projects, often with input from unnamed developers that worked on them. Nevertheless, this is very much still a rumor at this point. GameSpot has contacted BioWare parent company EA for a statement.

Interestingly, Drew Karpyshyn, who served as lead writer on the first Knights of the old Republic and also worked on the first two Mass Effect titles, rejoined BioWare in 2015. Posting on Twitter, he confirmed that he was working on a new project, but didn’t provide any further details.

,@jenjen1936 Yes, but that’s all I can say. Hell, I might already have said too much. πŸ™‚

    β€” Drew Karpyshyn (@DrewKarpyshyn) March 29, 2017

A number of other Star Wars titles are also in development at various EA studios. DICE and co-developer Motive Studios are working on Star Wars: Battlefront 2, the first trailer for which will arrive on April 15 at 11:30 AM PT/2:30 PM ET/7:30 PM GMT.

TItanfall developer Respawn is also creating an “all-new third-person action adventure game set in the Star Wars universe.” The project is being led by God of War 3 director Stig Asmussen, who joined Respawn in 2014.

  • Remedy Bringing Quantum Break's Engine To PS4 For Its Next Game

Max Payne and Alan Wake developer Remedy Entertainment has said its next game, codenamed P7, will be released on “a wider range of platforms” and indicated it will run on Northlight, the same engine that powered its Xbox One and PC exclusive Quantum Break.

In a post on the official Remedy website, the studio confirmed that it is “developing its Northlight technology also for PlayStation 4 consoles.” Remedy has been making games primarily for Microsoft platforms since 2003, so P7 will be the first game from the studio to launch on a PlayStation platform since Max Payne 2.

Its last game, Quantum Break, was initially released on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC in April 2016. It “sold really well,” according to Microsoft, even beating the company’s expectations.

In GameSpot’s Quantum Break review, Peter Brown awarded it a 6/10, saying its “gameplay is essentially divided equally between combat and hapless environment traversal.”

He continued: “Getting to the end of Quantum Break can be an interesting ride at times, but no matter how impressive the combat is, or how great the game looks, there’s no getting around the fact that it’s driven by a story with limited appeal and hindered by disappointing design decisions.”

In August 2016, Remedy confirmed that it is working with Korean developer Smilegate on the campaign for CrossFire 2 and also has another secretive project in the works, which is likely to be P7. At the time it was described as being in the conceptual stage and is “pretty far off.”
